Happy Anniversary @The45Sessions

Limitations = Innovation. In this case the limitation is all 45's. For whatever reason, that limitation creates a greater appreciation for track selection.

J. Rocc Live in Toronto

5 minute glimpse of a Dilla tribute set by the Funky President. The clip captures J. Rocc mixing breaks to Dilla classics such as Light Works, Much More, and Shoomp.

New Beat Junkies Set (At least to the blog)

You watch enough of these 20th Anniversary performance clips and eventually you'll piece together the entire the performance as if you actually were there. The camera only shows J. Rocc but I'm 99.99% sure that Mr. Choc is also assisting in mixing duties. I challenge any deejay to watch this clip and not want to go out and put a little battle routine together. Enjoy.

Live at Soda Pop - Mixed by DJ Excel

If hip hop deejays had existed back in the days bee-bop and early rock'n'roll, their mixes would have sounded something like this.

Hands down, one of my favorite parties to play. Not just in LA but state wide. Pretty simple concept. Classics. Nothing newer than 1979 & No Disco. Yeah, this party is not for the light crated DJ. Nor is it for the close minded 23 year old club goer. You really have to be stacked up on classic rock & soul & have knowledge of playing it. No 8 bar intros here kids. Needless to say this party is packed every week & you pretty much have to force them to leave when the lights are on.

I've been meaning to record a set here for a while. Last night, I finally did.

Combined, it's a 3 hour set of grooves. #DOTHEKNOWLEDGE and get familiar with the music your parents #SLEWFOOTED to.

While She Slept (Mona Lisa) - Pipomixes

My daughter slept in our room for the first 5 months of her life (she actually slept in our bed in my wife's arms for the first 3 months).  During these first 5 months, it was lights outs at the Mixes household at around 8pm where my wife and I would just lay still hoping that nothing would wake the baby.  It was during these nights that this mix was created.  I spent hours on end, night after night, listening to massive amounts of music playing through my headphones.  Much of the music playing in my headphones during this time was music that I probably would have never listened to under more ordinary circumstances.  As I would engage in the nightly ritual of listening to music, I would take notes in my iphone's notepad to identify which songs I thought would blend well with each other.  Once my wife and I were able to transition my daughter to her own room I was able to finagle some turntable time for myself while she slept to actually lay the mix down (mostly in headphones of course).

The mix includes music from $1 bin records whose names I don't remember, dusty finger breaks, Oddisee, Will Sessions, Ghostface, Beat less, Jay Electronica, El Michels Affair, J. Rocc, Damu, Blackalicious, Madlib, Spinna, Gravediggaz, PUTS, David Axelrod, Slum Village, Dilla, and more...  For those of you who enjoy my mixes, you will enjoy.  TRUST ME.

B-Real interviews Revolution as he explains how he got down with Sway and Tech along with why he started The Cut.

45 King Mix

Everything you'd expect from a 45 King mix, a lot of funk and breaks. Enjoy

Stretch & Bobbit Pop-Up Show

A trip down memory lane for some, a glimpse into hip hop history for others.

Prior to their appearance at the New Museum, Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito did a "one-time" only pop up show on their original time slot, day and station 89.9 WKCR FM NYC. Do not try this at home without proper Hip-Hop supervision. A taste of the Cadberry goes out to Madam Superior.

Love's Holiday - Mixed by DJ Apollo

This is the first time Dj Apollo has recorded his set Live and dropped it as a mixtape release. This will be the first to set off a volume released as LIVE performances. This set was performed for The Love Movement - Valentine Party @ Club Mighty SF (2.14.13) featuring the Triple Threat DJs - Apollo & Shortkut, hosted by Fran Boogie. This mix is inspired by Classic Loves Songs from the Golden Oldies Era, to the 70's, 80's & 90's.

Brasiliana: Lounge From Another World - Mixed by DJ Haylow

The description below pretty much sums it up.

This mix by DJ Haylow is more than just a compilation of songs. It is a mindset.

Brasiliana takes place in the late 60′s, early 70′s, and it is truly a beautiful place. The vibe is one of pipes and smoking jackets while entertaining a social event in your mod style case study house overlooking the city, or it could be a relaxing day on a deserted white sand beach. Either way, Brasiliana is musical enjoyment at the fullest, designed to paint a picture of another world and era. An assortment of lounge music, you will hear bossa nova, samba, and jazz by Brazilian, Italian, and American artists, singers, composers, musicians, and arrangers. There is no limit to instrumentation, as each song holds unique qualities that make them different from the next, though the mix in it’s entirety has a marvelously cohesive sound that makes it an easy listen from start to finish.
This is a glimpse into a time that sparks intrigue, style, fascination, and wonderment.

Welcome to Brasiliana.

DJ Battlecat Live at The Boombox L.A.

Battlecat is really putting in some work here. He freaked some tracks I normally would rather not hear, but kept me listening (or watching) because of how he was freaking the records. Props

J. Rocc and DJ Spinna at Flavors L.A. (2012)

Two solid highlights here: J. Rocc backspinning Ice Cream in Part 1, and Supa Star being mixed into The Bizness in Part 2 is worth watching more than once. Part 2 after the jump.

Slow Jamz Vol. 1 - Mixed by Sparkle Motion

A bunch of corny slow jams here, but for some reason I've had this mix on constant rotation this weekend. Enjoy.

Blazing Sessions 45 Mix - Mixed by DJ E da Boss

I made this mix in celebration of two things. First is the third anniversary of Oakland’s 45 Sessions, where I have been a resident since the beginning and where Rhettmatic and Shortkut (Beat Junkies) are coming to play this month. Second is my debut at LA’s Blazing 45s with Rich Medina.
The mix is all about moving your feet and dancing. No quick mixes or scratch tricks going on here, just 100 percent booty shaking sweet soul jams.

Warmfuzzy - Mixed by DJ Neil Armstrong

Happy Valentine's Day everybody.  Now go out and buy some overpriced flowers, wait around to get seated at some overcrowded restaurant only to get shitty service, and start explaining to your honey bunny why next Valentine's Day will be better.

Freak the Funk - Mixed by Amerigo Gazaway

On the heels of his latest project, Bizarre Tribe; A Quest To The Pharcyde, we’re thrilled to announce Amerigo Gazaway’s inclusion on this year’s South By South West line up!
Hailed as one of the largest, most influential music events of the year, Gazaway will soon join the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Big Krit, A$ap Rocky, Action Bronson, The Pharcyde, and countless others who will leave their mark on the stages of SXSW.

In honor of this monumental event, Amerigo has put together a 35 minute mix of funk jams, original mashups and remixes for those who won’t be with us in Austin. Featuring tracks from Kashmere Stage Band, Gummy Soul's Wally Clark x Kanye West, The Meters, Q-Tip, Grover Washington Jr., Blowfly and more.

Correct Technique Records: DJ Spinna

A little promo with Spinna discussing how he plans to throw his hat back into the hip hop production ring. Some nice shots of Spinna on the SP-1200 and of his home studio.

Way Out of Living 2 - Mixed by DJ Day

It’s not often that Day blesses us with a new mix, but on the cusp of Land Of 1000 Chances, he took a second to put the instruments down and compile a set that gives us a rare glimpse into the musical inspiration behind the critically acclaimed new LP. Featuring songs both new and old, originals and remixes, WOOL2 picks up where the first left off; a perfectly balanced mix of wonderful music to herald in the coming spring.

Crate Diggers - DJ Rhettmatic

To post or not to post Crate Diggers featuring Jermaine Dupree? While I contemplate that all important question, enjoy Rhett's vinyl collection. I would have preferred to see a few more panoramic shots of Rhettmatic's collection, but beggars can't be choosers.

Splash Mag. Interviews J. Rocc

Here is an interview of J. Rocc from last year while he was promoting his Some Cold Rock Stuff LP. The interview has J. Rocc sharing some interesting tidbits about the type of music he listens to and what he looks for in a mix.

J. Dilla Tribute @ Raise it Up (2/7/11) - DJ Nu-Mark

House Shoes Presents: Raise It Up - A Tribute to James "J Dilla" Yancey. Feb. 7, 2011 Little Temple, Los Angeles.

This mix was the set I did at Little Temple. I had fun teasing Babu that night about playing a super crackley record before I went on after he murdered it. Dilla is my favorite Hip Hop producer. To this day one of the highest compliments I've received is that he sampled one of my snares!! R.I.P. to Dilla one of very few that mastered his instrument (the MPC)!!!!

WhatUpDoe Volume 3 - Mixed by DJ Rhettmatic

Peace Everyone…..

Today is February 7th, 2013….which means it is the birthday of one of the greatest Hip Hop Producers of all time, James Yancey aka J Dilla. Today he would've been 39 years old. It is incredible that every month of February for the last 8 years that Dilla's life & music is celebrated around the whole world. It is also bittersweet because he was taken from us in such an early age when it looked like he was really get ready to take the world by storm. I've been very lucky & blessed to be part of his close circle of friends when he moved to Los Angeles. Not only was he was a talented individual and one of the nicest & humble guy I ever met, he was also a private person…..you definitely don't want to get on his nerves…LOL!!

I know there's a lot of Dilla Tribute mixes out there, and me personally, I don't think there's anyone that can out top a Dilla mix that was made by my fellow Beat Junkie & the 3rd Member of Jaylib, the Funky President himself, J.Rocc. The only one who can possible come close would our good friend, Houseshoes. I already made 2 mixes a few years ago, but I was inspired again to work on another one. I tried to finish the mix late last night but got real tired….I just finally finished this mix before the day was over. I definitely was trying not to repeat songs like I did on my previous Dilla mixes but sometimes you can't help going back to his classic catalogue. Anyways, here's my third installment of my "J Dilla Whatupdoe" mixes, a 30 minute vibe mix. Unfortunately, we also lost another Musical legend a few days ago….Mr. Donald Byrd, and i actually added the original "Think Twice" song to the mix as well as Dilla's version, in paying homage to the legendary musician.

Rest in Peace to Donald Byrd…..and Rest In Peace & Happy Birthday to one of the greatest….J Dilla.

New York Minute 101 - Midnight Marauder

New York Minute - 101 - Midnight Marauder by Gasface

I've posted a variety of Gasface videos over the last several months, but I never actually bothered to peep all of their videos on their Dailymotion site.  Man, whoever these guys are, they are just on some other ish.  From insightful interviews of deejays and producers to compelling documentaries, these folks are bringing heat from a very fresh perspective.  The above mini-doc examines the culture of street CD hustlers by focusing on a particular vendor who was shot to death by a NYPD cop.  It's been 4-5 years since I last visited NYC and I just figured all the CD hustlers took their hustle to web.  Apparently, I was wrong.  I still don't follow the logic of thinking you can sell music that nobody has ever heard of on the street when everybody can download music they are familiar with on the web for free.  However, the spirit of the hustler (specifically the NYC hustler) never ceases to amaze me.

Looking 4 Galt

LOOKIN4GALT by Gasface

Hair is the most popular Musical of all time.
It has been translated in every language and staged all over the world, generating pyramids of arab money.
Its composer lives an intensely private life somewhere in New York.
He never gave any interview and seem to ignore the cult going on about him.
His name? Galt MacDermot. Our mission? "Lookin4Galt" .

Blazing 45 Rehearsal - Mixed by DJ Boogie Blind

Byze One's below description pretty much says it all.  I tried to find some video of the actual live mix, but I've been unsuccessful so far.
In a day when most DJ's can't even name every member of Tribe or even have any wax in their homes. There are a few of us that will never stop digging in the crates for that rare gem. Shit if we need the record that bad well go and press it up ourselves. F_ck an mp3 (sometimes)
Last week, my brother Boogie Blind came to LA and handed us our asses when he rocked at Blazing 45's.  It has to be hands down one of the nicest set's that I've ever seen live.  90 mins. of flawless one drops, blends, and cuts all on 45.  No laptop, no skips, no mistakes....I hope they recorded it.....
In the meantime, while he was practicing his set at my crib, I hit record....here it is; Rehearsal Stylee

K-Def - Music is My Character

Music Is my Character by Gasface

I was meaning to post this over the weekend but I didn't want this video to get overlooked. I was personally very inspired and encouraged by K-Def's commitment to music in general, as well as the preservation of hip hop culture. Hip Hop is still very much alive and there are plenty of notables who continue to do their thing at a very high level. I just hope more "notables" continue to preserve and showcase the culture in as thoughtful a way as K-Def.

Rhettmatic & Shortkut Live at NAMM 2013 *Sticky*

I just watch this video again and after watching it a second time I developed a better appreciation for the fact that this is some incredible ish.  Do yourself a favor and watch these 12 minutes of turntable mastery again if you slept the first time around.

Escapism! - Mixed by Phoreyz & DJ Expo

I received a bunch of dope mix cds in my mailbox Friday afternoon courtesy of my main man, DJ Expo.  This 2x4 mix recorded live is an absolute gem.  I don't even need all of my fingers on one hand to count the amount of times I've been to a bar/club in the last year, but I'd be in heaven if I walked into a nightspot and saw/heard two deejays putting in work like this.  Like any good 2x4 mix, expect to hear all sorts of blends, remixes, and a wide assortment of genres tastefully mixed into one big audio landscape. Very well done.
