Covers, Tributes, & Reinterpretations - Mixed by Pipomixes



I think Mos Def was right when he said that the future of hip hop is in the instrumental album. I think 95% of my favorite releases of the last few years have been without emcees. Since I'm always looking for a new theme to base a mix around, I thought it would be a good idea to mix together my favorite cover songs, tributes, and reinterpretations of hip hop classics that have proliferated over the last few years. Now it just so happens, all these joints (or almost all) are emcee'less. The mix consists of tributes to, reinterpretations of, and covers by Miles Davis, Jeremy Taylor, El Michels Affair, Wu Tang Clan, Isaac Hayes, Biggie Smalls, Frank Sinatra, Madlib, J. Dilla, J. Rawls, Beatnuts, Pete Rock, Eryka Badu, Mr. Chop, A Tribe Called Quest, Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Damu the Fudgemunk, Jefferson Airplane, Tom Scott, Oh No, DJ Spinna, Black Moon, John Coltrane, and a few more that I can't remember. Listing all these name I bet you're probably thinking that this mix is like 3 hours long. Wrong. The mix runs just under 25 minutes. I know, I know, why so short? Well, you already know the answer to that. Quality over quantity. In any event, a lot of time, money, energy, and love went into this effort so I hope you all enjoy.

    PIPO. is it really you? you were mailing out free mixes to anyone who gave you their address on UGHH like TEN YEARS AGO and i got one and must still have it somewhere. four tracks total i think? first track was a juggled gangstarr instrumental track if i recall. just stumbled on your blog via a friend. this must be...destinyyyyy.

    Yo pipo u know I never thought of it like that as far as whut u was sayin bout Mos Def and the instrumental part of HipHop Culture I fully agree this mix opening my day just Mos Def was right when he said that the future of hip hop is in the instrumental album.

    I dig Mos, but I think the future of hip hop is the epic, narrative concept album, but I think a lot of instrumental albums fit into that category as well.

    been listening to HipHop since early 80's... and been listening to instrumentals and sampled music for the last 10 years.... most lyrics are dead- rappers aint rapping about shit these days.... of course there's a few but as a whole the industry is shot. Pipo's site is a place that keeps expanding my musical taste.... thanks Pip..

    its funny first you fall in love with the sample, then with the snippet (kon & Amir- dj unexpected-Muro) and finally fall in love with the original song..

    I have to restrain from not playing this mix more often in order to avoid wearing it out, but I'm starting to realize the futility of my efforts. I'll listen to other mixes of my favorite old school favorites, but it only reminds me of this mix and my mind is on stuck mode, reminiscing.

    This mix has a rare musical genius that demonstrates the cunning talent and precision of a samurai. MAJOR props!
