It'...Couldn't have said it any better Pipo. It's something else to just walk in there, see Rhettmatic or whoever, see the hand written signs about coppin' classic joints and utter sense that this is a place where hip hop thrives. I remember going to the store back when it was on Vermont and saying to myself, one day I will own every one of these records. I do for the most part, and just like you, it's the reason I haven't been buying much when I step in there now. But it as great to know that I could step in there after a month or so. Not after Sept 2010. It will be missed!DJ Bozohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04411254940477745046noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8216426411647598645.post-6372164708460782152010-08-19T00:23:30.561-04:002010-08-19T00:23:30.561-04:00I also wondered how Fat Beats stayed in business f...I also wondered how Fat Beats stayed in business for so long.

I think the issue is deeper than how hip hop is sold, or even the format. The issue is much more fundamental. Society has changed, but hip hop hasn't.

If you look at music history, every genre faces the issue of social change. Jazz managed to stay relevant for a lonnng time. Rock/Pop remains relevant. Electronica has remained relevant for the most part. But hip hop just hasn't quite figured out a new bag.

IMO, the fundamental problem is that hip hop built itself up on black machismo. Culturally, that's a dead end, if only because even Black men are starting to reject the macho archetype. And so now we have the skinny jeans movement.

Eventually, hip hop will be revived, but certainly not within the next few years. It may take a few generations.

As for Fat Beats, to me that place was all about hanging out with Beat Junkies, Houseshoes, in-stores. You know, the people. Vinyl is cool. But mp3s are cool too.Eric Nordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03657372211544059883noreply@blogger.com
