Many of you have been requesting a re-up of the Gil Scott tribute mix that was posted a few nights ago.  Unfortunately, I did not download the mix so I can't re-up it at the moment.  In the meantime, enjoy.

On May 27th 2011 the world sadly lost a true artist (I’m still a bit in shock from the news). I’ve had all of Gil’s albums on constant repeats since and put together this little tribute mix of some of my all time favourite tunes by the master.
Peace Go With You, Brother
1. Intro - The Ghetto Code
2. Who’ll Pay Reparations On My Soul
3. Lady Day and John Coltrane
4. Home Is Where The Hatred Is
5. Or Down You Fall
6. Fell Together
7. The Summer Of 42
8. Angola, Louisiana
9. Grandma’s Hands
10. Tuskeegee 626
11. We Almost Lost Detroit
12. Ain’t No Such Thing As Superman

I haven't heard the mix in it's entirety yet, but I felt the need to get something up ASAP.  I feel a little embarrassed that I haven't yet made a Gil Scott Heron mix of my own.  I'm sure we'll get plenty more tribute mixes in the coming weeks.  All you hip hop historians may correct me, but I don't think it's a stretch to say that Gil Scott birthed the MC.  Man, too many good ones going without enough good ones to replace.

After last year's disappointment, I swore that I'd never return to another Rock the Bells or Guerrilla Union event.  However, just like Michael Corleone in Godfather III, they keep sucking me back in.  This year's RTB lineup is pretty damn tempting.  Nas performing Illmatic (with Primo on the wheels), Raekwon and  Ghost performing Only Built for Cuban Linx, Blackmoon peforming Enta Da Stage, and the illusion of Lauryn Hill performing Miseducation is alluring enough to have me considering the possibility of donating more money to the incompetent people over at Guerrilla Union .  Remember, I only said "considering."  Believe it or not, a lineup like that wouldn't be good enough to get my $$ after last year's debacle.  But......the improved venue of the San Manuel Amphitheater which has comfortable seating (particularly for those willing to fork over extra $$ for VIP tix) might be just enough.  So, what do you all think?  Should I stay or should I go?

Reconstruction 3 was a Japan only release I had put out quietly in the early 2000's and part of my Reconstruction Golden age of Hip Hop series. I recently found a cassette copy in the garage archives and finally found a way to transfer it digitally. A challenging feat when you don't own a tape deck anymore. I never did duplicate the Turntable gymnastics of the first volume but there are some choice Dj cuts from the triple threat album and a more tame version of turntablism which actually reflected a lot of my attitudes about putting records together at the time...Enough of the analysis, Download a free copy of SIDE A and Support Side B if ya feelin it. Enjoy!

I'm not really sure how to explain this mix, but it's some good shish.

Mo Kolours, the half-Mauritian percussionist and vocalist celebrated by the likes of Gilles Peterson, has released a new EP on One-Handed Records entitled Drum Talking. Based on drums, this project includes a variety of songs that all focus on percussion. Clearly audible throughout are the influences of soul, dub, and sega music.

Your favorite blogger's favorite blogger. This month Ian Head brings you a smooth mix of all Beatles covers. Description of the mix below.

The Beatles are funny - I play some of these covers and the lyrics and melodies come to me instantly, like they were ingrained in my being, even though I may not have listened to the original in 10 or 20 years. But I was never really a Beatles-lover growing up. As a kid, my parents owned and sometimes played Sgt. Pepper's, and my friend Dan Morris was a Beatle-head at a young age - he had one of those cassette-organizers with the three drawers, and I remember opening up one of the drawers and it being filled with all Beatles tapes. This is actually one image I associate most with the Beatles to this day - I think I was more amazed by his collection than the music.(I also remember those cassette-drawers things being really crappy plastic pieces of $%#^).
So I don't have a full understanding how all these songs have permeated my brain. My only guess is that growing up in this country, at least during a certain period of time, the Beatles were such a cultural force that they were inescapable - even years after they had gone their separate ways. This isn't really a complaint, it's just something that's intense to think about.

Quantic is an umbrella name for UK-born, Will Holland: acclaimed producer, musician, and DJ for over 15 years, who’s projects incorporate various influences, from funk & jazz to electronic & folk music, to Latin, reggae, dub and cumbia. He recently put together this mix of rare 45s he found in Ethiopia, calling it ”a mix of folkloric and outer-regional music of Ethiopia, all 45s and some records that I think need to be heard. Less of breaks & wah wah and this time more of krar, claps, howling sounds and organ melodies.

If I need to sell this mix to you than you can feel free to leave this blog and never come back.  Below is Rhettmatic's description of the mix.

Peace Everyone,
Today, May 9th is Tony Stark's Birthday aka the Ghostface Killah! Even though this mix has been out for a minute, I thought i share this with you again in honor of Ghostdini!
This particular mix is called “36 DEADLY DARTS”….it’s the official “Ghostface Killah Doll” Mix CD; well, it’s supposed to be. Amish from 4Cast Unlimited reached out to me a couple of years ago to make a mix with a collection of Ghostface songs that would be an accompaniment to the limited edition doll. A least 1,000 CDs were made; half Amish would pass out during the clothing trade shows such as Magic, the other half, I would sell while I was on the road. There were actually some Ghostface dolls made (and btw, they look dope, considering how expensive it was…i think retail was going for $200. The doll had a real Gold Chain.) The last time I heard, it was in production.
Anyways, there was a buzz for the doll and I actually got a thumbs up from Ghostface for the mix, but for some reason, I don’t think the official doll ever came out, nor the mix CD. It’s been more than a year and I haven’t heard anything official of the release of the doll or the CD, so I decided, why not share it with you good peoples…..I really like the mix and I really put some work into this. It would be nice to have people actually hear it. If some of you good peoples actually have the official Mix CD with the official artwork and all, consider yourself lucky!
Happy Birthday to Tony Starks aka Ghostface Killah

Damn, I wish Rhettmatic would celebrate his birthday every week.  Thank you Rhettmatic.

Peace Everyone,
May is the month of the Taurus and alot of my favorite musical legends & artists happened to be Tauruses; like James Brown, Stevie Wonder, & Ghostface Killah...and ironically, I'm a Taurus as well. My birthday falls on May 10th...and to celebrate my birthday, I wanted to do something a little special & share it with everyone.
I was thinking of doing a mix on James Brown, but I realized that no one can do a James Brown mix better than my brother & fellow Beat Junkie, J.Rocc, so scratch that. I thought of doing one on Ghostface Killah, but I already did one a few years ago for the Ghostface Killah doll. Strike number 2! Last but not least, there's the legendary Stevie Wonder. I know that Dj Spinna & Bobbitto Garcia aka Cucumber Slice are the masters when it comes to Stevie's catalogue, but I actually made a mix that was a birthday gift for a good friend and was a big Stevie Wonder fan. I listened to the mix again a few weeks ago and I actually like how the mix came out. So I thought to myself, why not share it with people and also celebrate Stevie's birthday....I just added an intro to the mix, and what you have now, is "Wonderlove".
Here's the mix...hope you enjoy it, if you do, share it with your loved ones & other musical aficionados. Big shoutout & thank you to Randall at Mixcrate.com. Shoutout to Asad of Footlong Development.

This mix is too good to post on a Saturday.  Not that I blame you all for actually getting away from your computers and living life.  But, I couldn't wait to post this mix.  This is a collection of records sampled or covered by Massive Attack from their first three LPs and the singles of that time. Highly Recommended.  Tracklist after the jump.

It always seems to work this way. Just when I think I am finally running out of quality mixes there is suddenly this influx of dope ish. Enjoy because one of these days there will be no more mixes.

I was stoked and humbled when asked to do this mix. I’ve been a fan of The Beasties since I first heard Mr Magic interview them on WBLS in NY. I included some of my favorites as well as stuff off the new album. All remixed. It’s a Trip, it’s gotta funky beat, and you can bug out to it.
