Ever wonder what happened to the great Rawkus era producer, Shawn J. Period? If so, here you go.... Amazingly, Shawn J. explains his reasoning for halting his sample-based production style on moral grounds. I disagree with his reasoning, but I certainly respect it.

This producer’s history and evolution over the years is remarkable - from getting signed by Rob “Reef” Tewlow & Stretch Armstrong to Big Beat / Atlantic Records in the early 90’s as part of hip-hop trio “Down South”, transitioning to a full time producer and being mentored by some of the best in the game like JuJu & V.I.C. of The Beatnuts, T-Ray and many more to being behind the boards for what could eventually be considered one of the biggest hip-hop singles of its time, not to mention a certified classic - Mos Def’s “Universal Magnetic” b/w “If You Can Huh You Can Hear”. Shortly after that, he took what seemed like an abrupt break from music to focus on family, but has been making a calculated return to the game as of late. We get on the horn with Shawn to talk about all of this and more, including his much welcomed re-entry to the scene after the extended hiatus, why he was unknowingly WAY ahead of his time by making a move to sample-free production in the late 90’s and how he’s leveraging his invaluable experiences to launch the next phase of his career in music. J.Rocc Takes over Soulection Radio Episode #395
J. Rocc put down a 2-hour Dilla tribute mix on Soulection Radio over the weekend. You'll have to subscribe to AppleMusic to actually hear the mix. This video gives you some interviews taken from the show, and teases a little of the mix. The "talking" actually has some unknown Dilla tidbits that most of you will enjoy. IMO the mix alone is well worth a trial subscription if you're not already a subscriber.

Serato Unscripted: J.Rocc on LA radio, Mixtapes, Dilla and more
Before I get snarky, let me say that there are all sorts of nerdy tidbits (like the backstory to Sound Bombing 2) in this interview that you all will enjoy. However, one would think an 80 minute interview with J. Rocc would have way more uncharted information than what you'll get here. IMO All of the blame goes to the guy asking the questions. I assume the interviewer is somebody important at Serato, but he's clearly what you would have called a "poser" in the 80's. Dude knows enough to act like he knows what J. Rocc was talking about; but not enough to actually ask the appropriate follow-up questions to really dig into many of the topics raised. Though worth a watch/listen; most music nerds (which is the target audience of an interview like this) will find this interview very unsatisfying (in my Teddy KGB voice). Oh well, opportunity missed. Damn culture vultures...
Brian Cross aka B+ Lecture (Seattle 2005) | Red Bull Music Academy

Brian Cross first encountered hip-hop in the early '80s, a meeting that sealed a lifelong love affair between the music, the culture and the young Irish photographer. Cross eventually moved to Los Angeles for post-graduate studies. One of his professors was the influential author of City Of Quartz, Mike Davies. Davies encouraged Brian to combine his love of hip-hop culture, photography and politics. This led to It's Not About A Salary - Rap And Resistance In L.A., one of the earliest published books about hip-hop. The tome captured photos and stories from many of the early exponents of hip-hop on the west coast alongside a political and cultural history of the city. In session at the 2005 Red Bull Music Academy, this inspired photographer, director and historian discusses the Brasilintime documentary and tells us how he finds new and innovative ways to view hip-hop (and the world). At the birth of hip-hop and electro in Los Angeles, Uncle Jamm’s Army started out playing high school parties in the mid-70s, and went on to become LA’s most popular dance promoters for over a decade. Founded by the legendary Rodger Clayton, along with an extensive and evolving crew of DJs including Dr. Funkenstein, Chris “the Glove” Taylor, DJ Bobcat, Arabian Prince and Egyptian Lover, and Ice-T on the mic, freaks of all styles and affiliations packed out their parties at huge venues like the Los Angeles Sports Arena.
Along with the L.A. Dream Team and Uncle Jamm’s rivals from across town, Alonzo Williams and Cli-N-Tel of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, these artists created a blueprint for electro and rap that continues to resonate in all forms of dance music today.

Excellent mini-documentary of the L.A. Beat Scene by the same filmmaker who produced The Unseen and All Ears (Gus Sutherland). QFT mostly focuses on Ras G and Kutmah. The video is over four years old, but somehow escaped my radar (and probably yours as well).
