Beat Making in a Power Outage

The software vs. hardware debate will continue to the end of time. One clear point in favor of hardware is that I don't think beatmaking without power is a possibility with software. This video captures the SP 303/404 God and internet sensation, Nick tha 1da making beats with his battery powered SP-404 throughout a power blackout. Quite inspiring. Enjoy

Labor of Love Volume 5 - Mixed by Ohmega Watts

Very smooth all 45 vinyl mix on that soulful, laid back vibe.
This is my 5th installment of a series titled 'Labor of Love'. I never got to make a mix last year and almost missed this year. While sorting through vinyl for some 'VINYL ONLY' events I have coming up, I got inspired to create this mix of 45's and created a quick cover for it.

This series is 'VINYL ONLY'. I started doing these mixes as a true labor of love to be shared during this season for FREE! No 'puppy love' type tracks here. These mixes always have something for everyone when it comes to matters of the heart and significant others, or the lack there of!

Enjoy and thanks for the listening. Spread Love ~Take 6

Chris Karns (fka DJ Vajra) Live @ Radio Bums Hangout

I stopped following DMC battles around 1999 and I stopped following Master of the Mix back in season 1 when DJ Revolution was sent home. In other words, I had no idea who Chris Karns or DJ Vajra was until randomly stumbling onto this video about 45 minutes ago. Wow! As smooth and impressive of 7 minutes of mixing I've seen, period.

Rare Equations (1995) - Mixed by Cut Chemist

I was searching for some footage of the J5 reunion at Coachella and came upon this classic mix uploaded to youtube. You can stream the video above if you don't trust my "highly recommended" recommendation. A download link is below for those who know better than to question my impeccable taste in music.
This mixtape, "Rare Equations" by Lucas MacFadden a.k.a Cut Chemist, was taken from the original bootlegs that were doing the rounds back in 1995. The "Rare Equations" CD version was officially released some 7 years later (2002) on the back of the success that was "Brainfreeze".

The "Rare Equations" mix (when compared to Brainfreeze) is a more chilled outing with some deep jazz and funk numbers and not a novelty song (slurp slurp) in sight!

Vinroc's Explains The Making of Reconstruction

Ever since I discovered DJ Sorce-1's Heavyinthestreets blog I've been canvassing all of his interviews and editorials with the intensity of a teenage boy who just discovered his dad's Playboy stash.  Here's an old 2008 interview that DJ Sorce-1 did for the The Smoking Section where he interviewed Vinroc and has him explain his classic Reconstruction mixtape.  Enjoy.

No introduction needed here. However, Babu's story of rocking doubles of The Stylistics' "You're a Big Girl Now" for 10 straight minutes at some girl's quinceanera is one of the bigger G moves I've heard of in quite some time.

Funk the World 13 - Mixed by The Gaff

"Wow! When I was asked to contribute to Fort Knox's Epic 'Funk The World' series, I was ecstatic! Given a month time to work on it, the pressure was on! Taking Fans 'around the world' through a musical journey is one of my favourite ways to flaunt obscure sounds. Within these 45 minutes, you'll hear Funk Drums, Latin Melodies & Rhythms, Lebanese Funk, Afrobeat, Brazilian, Latin Jazz, African Funk, Cumbia, and of course, since it's 'Fort Knox'; BREAKBEATS! Much of this is recorded from the original vinyl, and you'll hear a grip of exclusive edits & blends to this mix! Enjoy!"

The Cut Live with DJ Dynamix

Dope set by DJ Dynamix followed by an even better interview where Dynamix and Rev discuss a variety of issues surrounding the Master of the Mix show. Topics include: the "qualifications" of the show's judges, the licensing issues surrounding the music played on the show by deejays, whether Dyanamix thinks he's going to win, the competition on the show, and some other things that all of you critical bastards will enjoy.

J Rocc, Adrian Younge, Ghostface Killah, Killah Priest in LA

12 Reasons to Die drops today, but the real reason why this video is being posted here is the opening set by J. Rocc. The set in only 20 minutes, but it's one of the better J. Rocc sets I've heard in recent memory (which is saying a lot).

Break Builders Volume 1 - Mixed by DJ Zeph

Wifey is away at a business dinner, baby is asleep, so Pipo has got nothing but time to provide new content for the blog faithful. Last post of the night because I'm going to see if I can squeeze in a few minutes on the tables before Mrs. Mixes gets home. Description of this highly recommended mix is below.

Live Breaks Mix using all original pressings, 3 turntables, 2 mixers. Performed by DJ Zeph & Imperial. recorded live to DAT. mastered by Rafi at Studio 45.
This is not the original cover. Real cover coming soon. I'd never seen this cover until i did a google search for our mix....gotta love the interwebs....

I Read a couple of blog posts about this one. SOME of the comments I'm not sure I agreed with. All thought part 2 was a success for different reasons, part one offers some cool shit i'd like to point out.
This was recorded Live!! not many other mixes, especially featuring breaks are done that way. Sure theres better technical DJ's, and DJ's with better collections, but we kinda brought a good balance of both to the tables (haha) , but more importantly TRANSITIONS!! Neither of us are Q-Berts, but DJ Imperial isn't far behind. His cuts are so dope, Oh my god, and funkier than most big name dj's. The selection is what it is, and we definately weren't above playing records that weren't super rare, especially compared to a Shadow/Cut Chemist mix. We set out to provide a vibe, and i feel like that was more important here. both Imperial and I spent the most amount of time deciding on what to play. But the transitions, whew!! definately more considered than other popular breaks mixes of the day. if you listen to most you can definately tell the transitions were secondary, like a Muro mix. Where as here you can really tell its all part of a story, and seamless/interesting transitions are telling it. And again Live!!

We really had a great time putting this together, and it reflects a great time period when Imperial lived with me for a summer in SF, and we worked on music as much as possible. DJ Paul Nice, our roomie at the time, was driven crazy while we were putting it together, thanks for putting up with us Paulie!! We got a good amount of recognition when it came out. Allthough only pressed up in small numbers, and sold at exclusive locations, it was always sold out and on re order...earning an Amoeba records Staff pick of the year, and supportive comments like "better than [Shadow & Cut Chemist's] brainfreeze'.

We used three Technics 1200's, one Gemini Scratch Master (really!!), one Vestax 06pro, Ortofon Needles, A Sony DAT recorder...don't remember how we combined the signals, this was circa 1998!!!

Scion Studio Tour Blowout! (A-Trak, Mark Ronson, and Dam Funk)

P-Thugg (Chromeo) Home Studio

Okay, so I stumbled upon a variety of home studio videos made by Scion (who will be right there in the hip hop heavens next to Fuse) after watching the Jazzy Jeff video posted earlier. Regular frequenters of the blog know that I can't get enough of these home studio videos. I didn't feel right keeping all of these videos to myself so I thought I would share the ones that I enjoyed most with all of you. Enjoy

Jazzy Jeff Studio Tour

This is not the first video of Jazzy Jeff's studio to be posted on this blog. However, none of the previous videos have shown Jeff get into the type of detail about his studio gear as this one. Oh how I desperately want that interface. The eternal debate, the warmth of analog equipment vs. the convenience of digital gear.

Egypt is the Place to Be (Egyptian Lover Tribute) - Mixed by The Mighty Mike P

Unique theme? Check. All vinyl mix? Check. All live mix? Check. Well executed mix? Check. Enjoy.

A tribute to the one of the greatest to ever do it, the Egyptian Lover. This is an all-live (one take) all-vinyl mix featuring some of his more well known tracks and some deeper cuts.

J-Zone Beat Making Video

The always entertaining J-Zone walks us through his beat making process. The video include insightful tidbits such as J-Zone discussing his definition of "success," how he once cataloged all of his random voice overs, and how he found his groove as a producer.

Third Floor Radio Mix - DJ Rhettmatic

This mix got me through the weekend here.  Rhett is in rare form mixing new with old, exclusives, demos, and all sorts of other ish that you all will enjoy.  The stream also contains an interview with Rhettmatic discussing his mobile deejay days, Dilla, and other assorted topics.

Here's the audio to the J. Rocc and Kutmah Boiler Room set in Paris from a few weeks ago. Enjoy.

Operation Doomsday Sample Mix - Boom Bap Beatnik

Operation Doomsday (as well as this mix) show that taste in music as much as MPC skills, serve as the blueprint for classic hip hop music. Listening to this mix of Doomsday samples I can't help but want to hear Doom's raps just ride over the originals. Hmmm. Maybe I'll do that myself. Anybody have some Doomsday acapellas?

Happy Birthday Marvin - Mixed by DJ Jaycee

Constantly searching the web for quality mixes can be a tiring task at times.  For reasons unknown, there are weeks where the mix-well seems kinda dry.  Other weeks, that mix well is overflowing with quality mixes.  For the most part, the mixes are always out there on the web, it's just matter of whether my google searches and daily browsing takes me in a direction where I stumble onto mixes that inspire me.  Kind of like being in a mix search zone if you will.  Well, I think I'm in a little bit of a zone here.  I was very impressed by yesterday's DJ Finesse Biggie/Premier mix, as I am equally impressed by today's DJ Jaycee Marvin Gaye mix.  For those of you wondering, I've got a few more gems in the chamber but I'm going to do my best to save those for a dry period.  Enjoy.

B.I.G. over Premier - Mixed by DJ Finesse

Absolutely incredible mix! Biggie vocals over Premier beats isn't exactly a novel idea, but the execution of this mix is superb. Each Biggie acapella is perfectly matched with a Primo beat that wraps around the legendary rapper's vocals like broken-in glove.  Some of my favorite blends: Big Poppa over Ex to Next Girl; All About the Benjis over Supa Star; and I Got a Story to Tell over Shit is Real.  Highly Recommended.

This month marks the passing of the lauded rapper Notorious B.I.G. and to honor his legacy, New York resident DJ Finesse debuted a special tribute during DJ Premier's Sirius/XM show "Live From Headqcourterz" on March 8.
The mix showcases Biggie's a capellas paired with Premier-produced beats. While the original tribute was shorter for air-time, Finesse extends the tribute for hip-hop fans here with a special intro by Premier himself.
DJ Premier's "Live From Headqcourterz" airs every Friday night from 10 p.m. to 12 a.m. on Sirius/XM Channel 44, Hip Hop Nation. DJ Finesse is a regular guest on the show, filling in for Premier as an on-air mixer.
Tracklist:
01 - DJ Premier Intro
02 - Flava In Ya Ear rmx over I Gave You Power
03 - Big Poppa over Ex To Next Girl
04 - Dead Wrong over 2 Thousand
05 - 10 Crack Commandments over One Day
06 - Who Shot Ya over Come Clean
07 - All About The Benjamins over Supa Dupa Star (1994 Demo Version)
08 - One More Chance over Recognize
09 - Long Kiss Goodnight over You Know My Steez

Anomalous: A Jazz Mix by John "L.A. Jay" Barnes III

A mixtape of curious jazz sounds, curated by John "L.A. Jay" Barnes III.  Highly Recommended to al those who love themselves some jazz.

The mix consists of a variety of jazz recordings that, in their own ways, embody the spirit of all the brilliant, somewhat quirky and curiously elegant people I’ve seemed to know and attract as far back as I can remember. Playful, one of a kind individuals with deceptively high intellect and extraordinary intuition. I imagine the musicians and composers featured on this mix are that way, as well. It isn’t ‘experimental’ jazz per se, outside of the one Eric Dolphy track, perhaps. It’s a pretty accessible playlist featuring some of my favorite jazz anomalies, primarily Mingus, Monk, and early Sun Ra.

Tracklist:
1) Sun Ra - El Is a Sound Of Joy
2) Eric Dolphy - Hat and Beard
3) Charles Mingus - A Foggy Day
4) Thelonious Monk - Raise Four
5) Charles Mingus - Slop
6) Sun Ra - Paradise
7) Mulata Astatke - Tezeta (Nostalgia)
8) Sun Ra - Planet Earth
9) Thelonious Monk - Green Chimneys
10) Ornette Coleman - Una Muy Bonita
11) Charles Mingus - Better Git It in Your Soul
