Video: 45 King Spinning Live in Japon

How is it that this man has produced the biggest breakout singles for the two biggest rappers of the last 10 years (Jay-z and Eminem) and every rappers isn't blowing-up his phone like he's Scott Storch in 2005? Go figure... Either way, the 45 King can certainly get down on the 1's and 2's.

Funner Than Leather - Mixed by Thes One

To promote the upcoming release of the FUN DMC album, Thes One of PUTS dropped this mix. I listened to the mix the other night but was too tired to really remember any highlights. When was the last time PUTS put out anything that didn' have quality written all over it? That's right, never. So if you don't like the mix, feel free to send me all the hate mail that you'd like. Have a wonderful week.

The Masters - Mixed by The Conmen (Jake One and Mr. Supreme)

Was it me, or did this week go by slower than a hot summer night with no a/c. Maybe it was the nonstop news of the world's financial collapse, or maybe it was the realization that Thomas Hobbes was right after all, "life is nasty brutish and short." Whatever it was, there has never been a greater need to just lose yourself in the things you love most. If you are a frequenter of this blog, I'm guessing that one of those things that you love is music. So sit back, relax, and listen to Jake One and Mr. Supreme mix all your favorite soul and funk breaks. While you are listening to the mix, try to forget the fact that our futures are as uncertain as the release date for Detox. Sorry for the negativity overkill, but it's been that kind of week.

Isaac Hayes Tribute Mix - Mixed by Evil Dee

I've been meaning to post this mix for a minute now. Below is Evil Dee's contribution to the Isaac Hayes tribute stack. Also, be sure to check Evil Dee's weekly podcasts (if you don't already). Evil Dee is on the mix, come on kick it!

the Okayplayer.Mixtape - Mixed by Pipomixes

Getting older is difficult for everybody to deal with. But, getting older as a Hip Hop head is even tougher to process because many things about Hip Hop music are to put it bluntly, immature. As we Hip Hoppers have gotten older and started families, it has been difficult for all of us to reconcile are own personal growth and maturity, with the lack of growth of our culture's music. The collection of Okayplayer artists serve as the exception to that rule. Generally speaking, Okay artists continue to musically grow and innovate without abandoning their Hip Hop foundations. Many of these artists included in the mix are the same artists that continue to inspire me through my "I just turned 30 crisis." Watching a Roots show, or listening to Back to Black/Kweli/Blackalicious, restores my faith in a culture that I sometimes doubt fits me. To celebrate those artists who are pushing this culture to new and better places, I created the below okayplayer mix for your listening pleasure. All songs on the mix are either performed by, or produced by okayplayer artists. Now, before all of you start moaning and groaning about why I didn't include artist "such and such," I went off of okayplayer.com's artist roster for the "official" breakdown of okayplayers. I know there are several okay artists that are not included on the official roster, but I stuck with the official roster because the last thing I want is all you finicky okayplayer heads saying, "artist such and such is not an official okayplayer you moron." If your favorite okayplayer artist was left out of the mix, don't fret, because there is always volume 2. Expect the usual Pipomixes steez of mixing. Hope you enjoy the mix as much as I enjoyed making it.

Omega NYC is the 45 King - Mixed by Omega NYC

Just Blaze and Kanye West were the first to popularize sampling old soul classics at 45 rpm, but as far as I know, Omega NYC is the first deejay to do an entire mix at 45 rpm. I know what you are thinking, "who wants to hear an entire mix with chipmunks singing?" Well, that is the whole genius of the mix. Omega is able to 45 an entire mix without the mix sounding like it was 45'd. Listen and see, and if you don't dig the concept you can complain to your heart's content. The Okayplayer Mix will post tomorrow. Have a wonderful week.

Turntable Language - Mixed by J. Rocc

This mix has been making its rounds around the blogosphere as of late. For reasons unknown, I never heard this mix until recently. Based on the track selection and the style of mixing, I'm guessing that this mix was made in the early 2000's/late 90's. However, don't let the age of the mix deter you, if it has J. Rocc's name on it, it's official. Go Trojans!!!

Live at the Sex Machine - Mixed by J. Rocc

Many of you have heard "Live at the Sex Machine Today." But, have you heard "Live at the Sex Machine?" Same basic concept as Sex Machine Today, but far less heard and heralded. I'll let all of you decide which one you like better. I couldn't find the original artwork to the mix, but it is exactly like the above pic, with the exception of J. Rocc appearing where Kool the Gang does. Enjoy the mix and have a wonderful week.

Video: Fat Beats Mini-Documentary

You've got to wonder whether a record store like Fat Beats will survive the "digital age." All the mom and pops are dead, but will better financed stores like Fat Beats survive? As much as I love vinyl, I admit that because of digital vinyl, I don't buy nearly as much vinyl as I used to. Lately, vinyl purchases have been reserved for those joints that I simply can't download (legally). I'm as guilty as anybody for the slow death of vinyl. I still remember the day it happened. Graduation did not come out on vinyl and I was obsessed with making the Kanye's Crates mix, so I bought Torq the next day so that I could convert the cd to vinyl and make the mix. I haven't been buying vinyl at the same rate since (not to mention the economic slow down). Consider me confessed, enjoy the video.

I'm not the biggest Pharell fan, but I found this video and the beat in it, to be more dope than crack in the 80's.

D.I.T.C. Rare Breaks Stack One

I'm not really sure if this is a mix, compilation, or what? For that matter, I'm not even sure who or what is responsible for putting this together. Either way, the title says it all. So if you are a fan of the DITC (which I'm assuming most of you are) you should enjoy this one.
