I know all of you downloading whores come to the blog to download mixes, but I thought all of you might want to take a break from downloading (for at least a day) and enjoy reading this interesting article about the decline of sample-based Hip Hop music. Yeah that was a break from the action!!! I notice a lot of DJ's are very tense on the 1's and 2's they seem to be trying to do too much at one time!! So much adjusting and screwing around with laptops and such!! It was all so simple then!!
Pip... thanks for the interesting article.Hip-Hop samples are what broaden my taste to so much music. Look at the history... (Kraftwerk) trans Europe express- the base for Planet Rock. As far as Im concern Hip-Hop hasn't been the same for many years now. Sure there's a few jems here and there but its evolved into ugly ass "pop" music or as RZA put it "it's really a soggy-ass form of music." I hate to put Hip-Hop in a box but it just doesnt fit the box anymore... you can call it what you want. But without that crackling, dirty feeling sample sound.. its just not what it use to be. Now if you excuse me; I think Im going to go play some dirty ass Beatnuts music. Peace.
I didn't read the article first time I was actually commenting on the video!! That is deep I didn't realize that!! Let's understand this point though hip hop has evolved and this is it's results Kanye etc. The Raw essence of hip hop still has a place it's doing what we are all doing on these sites sharing that good ole raw hip hop, yet also helping those that have slept on samples and breaks a chance to embrace an art that has been buried for a long time!! I agree with that RZA piece but what's the answer? This been a long time coming!!
I am not a fan of Rap music today nor am I a hater!! But I go back to 79 having been a m.c, d.j. graffiti artist, and B- Boy!! I must say the air is outta Rap music, however Hip Hop is still around, there is still hope on the underground circuit, DJ's as well I have heard some lesser known DJ's tear up something more fierce than the aged pros that know their tricks!! I can go on but I gotta go, thanks for passing that info
Sampling will never die, producers just have to be more creative with the samples they flip and how they flip them.
To my knowledge, Primo never had to clear the samples used on "Nas is Like" and "Mass Appeal." Shit, I think heads just recently discovered the samples he flipped on those beats
(I didn't read the article, but I just want to add a thought.)
I think those Fraykerbreaks mixes are prime example. Those mixes have most all of Shadow's samples, and a lot of them are straight loops! But the oddity or rarity of those records make it next to impossible for him to eventually get sued. There's millions of albums out there that are lost and forgotten. It's just the difference between sampling from the top of the stack and sampling from the very bottom of the stack.
