Video: Exile, DJ Day, and Ski Beat Mixing Live

I saw these videos the other day posted on the okayplayer site. I thought some of the comments were pretty thoughtful (see below) and I am not really sure what side I'm on. However, there is one thing I do know. The so called "decline" of the music industry has lead to a resurrection of live music. Declining record sales has forced artists to do their thing live in order to pay the bills. I think this is a good thing because you've got to have skillz to perform live. Ain't no fakin the funk on a live stage. In any event, watch the below videos and comments and let me know what you all think.

however you make some dope shit doesnt matter, long as youre makin some dope shit...i can rock with it. you cant tell me rockin an mpc live doesnt take talent..like just because house cats have been usin mpcs live at parties doesnt make it whack or overplayed when a hip hop head uses it, cuz everyone has their own style. nobody rocks an mpc like exile.

i think the reason hip hop heads have started to get into this is because we've all gotten into the crate digging aspect. Being familiar with the source sample allows you to see the pieces being put together. So when some of hip hop's most influential and enjoyable moments can be recreated live, it's something to enjoy. While I assume (because I don't know) that most house type sets is more production on the fly and less bringing something from the past to life again, in front of the audience.

same with the second vid...I mean come on...house and techno people INVENTED Ableton Live (literally) and have been "DJing" with it since day one, in fact, live DJing and live performance with Ableton is played out in the house world because anybody can do it, its like playing a video game, takes no skill, and therefore has no value, strange that hip hop cats are just now picking up on it..with house and with hip hop DJing is only really done with 2 turntables and a mixer...that's all a good DJ needs to rock a party...period!

cool, but I don't see what the big deal with live MPC and other kinds of live programming in hip hop is because house and techno people have taken this to such another level over the past 15 years or so...
all this live MPCing is simplistic, it ain't all that! its cool and everything, great to watch, I like it and respect it but it isn't some kind of revolutionary thing and years behind what the house and techno cats have been doing forever...

i honestly dont understand anyone hating on this

it is what it is.. so how can you say its worthless because its not two turntables volume and a cross fader

there's a spectrum of sound that exists and however you access it and arrange it is up to you, and that's what music is.. man i cant believe im even typing this any description or criticism you give to this is going to fall short

so i say to each his own, including the house dj's.. if they wanna make dirty bathroom fuckin music i highly doubt they give a shit about the origins of hip hop and its therefore pointless to hate on them because of that..

oh and this has been one of my favorite videos having to do with hip hop in general
