After watching this video I can better understand how many of these legends became legends. Amazing what some talent, passion, and the willingness to think outside of the box will get you. I can just picture Q-tip circa 1990 alone in a studio corner zoning out and looping jazz loops, and walah, A Tribe Called Quest.

I'm trying to control my excitement about the Cuban Linx 2 album to avoid disappointment. That being said, I can't help but get a little amped after hearing how Raekwon is putting some thought behind the production of the album. In my opinion, production is the most important element of an album, and it's nice to hear that Raekwon agrees. It's difficult to imagine an album with beats by Dr. Dre, Rza, Pete Rock, and Dilla going bad. Hopefully I'm right.

Today's re-post consists of one of my all time favorite mixes. How can you go wrong? One of the best deejays mixing ones of the best groups, pure dopeness. Below is the original post.

"I'll do my best Jeru and com clean, I didn't even know this mixtape existed until two days ago when I was surfing through the okayplayer site. Now answer me this, do I go straight to Hip Hop hell for not knowing about this promo mixtape? While I'm thinking back to the whole Things Fall Apart era, I remember seeing the Roots for the first time at a Smoking Grooves concert (I think?) at Universal Amphitheatre back in 1999. The concert lineup consisted of Macy Gray, Everlast, The Roots, Eminem, and The Black Eyed Peas (performing in that order). Keep in mind that this was at a time where BEP's biggest hit was "Joints and Jams." I'll never forget Eminmen coming on stage and the whole crowd going nuts and as soon as the shady one's set was over, the whole crowd instantaneously evacuates the premises as if someone had just finished yelling "bomb!" I didn't stick around because I had no interest in seeing BEP, but I bet they didn't perform in front of more than 13 or 14 people (stage crew included). In any event, enough of my blah, blah, blah.... Enjoy the mix."

Another re-up for your re-listening pleasure. I wouldn't say that this mix was slept-on, but I will say that this mix is so good that it deserves another listen by those of you who don't have it in steady rotation.

Here's the review written by Fader magazine:

"Nineties jazz cats Digable Planets are a natural selection for a "these are the breaks" collection, and here DJ Jedi lets it all bang out with over 70 minutes of the group's sample sources. Southern California's Jedi served as the tour DJ when the Digs recently reunited and he nonchalantly cuts their building blocks together. If the Digable Planets are meant for the sunset hours and Butterfly's soul-rock Cherrywine project is for the blurry past-midnight, then Blowout Breaks for breakfast will get you right for the rest of day. Hearing Shuggie Otis's "Island Letter" slip into Skull Snaps' "It's A New Day" is even better than eggs and facon on an English muffin with green hot sauce."

Numark mixes are waaay too uncommon. So here is a dope Numark mix I found surfing through the Do-Over blog.

**Okay, now that I've actually listened to the mix I can say that this is straight fire. Numark gets love and all, but he really needs to be in that conversation with all the best. His steez is pure funk. Only word to describe his style, straight funky. Oops, I guess that was two words. You get the point.

I know what you're thinking, not another tribute mix. Well, I wouldn't post the mix if I didn't think it was worth your time. My man Chris Read claims that this is the greatest Michael Jackson tribute mix in the world. You know what? I don't necessarily disagree with him. Below is Chris Read's explanation of the mix.

"I know what you're thinking, the last thing world needs right now is yet another Michael Jackson tribute mixtape? Believe me, I'm pretty much of the same opinion and I didn't take the decision to do this lightly, but the flood of (in too many cases) pretty half baked tribute mixes, radio shows, podcasts over the past week kind of got under my skin. It seemed almost as though people were putting more effort into being the first to get something out than they were into a making decent job of it. I'm of the view that if you're going to mark somebody's life's work, the least you can do is pay some respect by putting some proper work into it.

So that's what I did. Just over a week after Michael's passing, I'm pleased to present what I've (humbly) called THE LEGACY: World's Greatest Jackson Tribute Mix! - 60 minutes, 45 tracks, featuring a selection of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5's original works, edits, acapellas and demos accompanied by records that have sampled them, cover versions, tributes and remixes from the likes of Dwele, Dilla, DJ Spinna and Ian Brown amongst others. All that laced with original interviews and some heavy edits. It's been a labour of love, but I'm feeling like it was worth it."

Another excellent mix from the 5th Platoon brethren. A funny little tidbit. As I was listening to the mix this weekend, my wife asked, "is that another Michael Jackson mix that you're listening to?" I guess Q-tip said it best, "...the way that Bobby Brown is amp just like Michael..." In all seriousness, I don't think Daddy Dog (or anybody else) could have done a better job with the NE catalog. Enough of my jibber jabber, have a great week everybody.

Here's a mix I did back in 2007 that fell victim to the zshare crash of 08. For some reason or another I never got around to re-upping this bad boy. Well, here it is for any of you who didn't get it the first time around. Below is my description of the mix.

"For those of you who are looking forward to the release of the Roots new album "Rising Down" as much as I am, here's a mix of classic Roots joints to hold you over until April 29th. This mix was inspired by a Roots concert that I saw in February 07. While watching the concert, I remember thinking to myself that Hip Hop isn't dead, it's just growing up. Hip Hop as a culture and art form must progress and develop in order to survive and stand the test of time. The original Hip Hop generation is getting older and getting more educated. We are not too far away from the first Hip Hop president (maybe even just a few months away). The Roots represent the direction that Hip Hop music should be headed. I'm not saying that all acts need to be live bands. But those MC's and producers that fuse the core elements with innovation will keep the art form alive and relevant."

Here's a great mix to get the holiday weekend started. Props to DJ Dmadness for giving Roy Ayers some shine. Below is the description of the mix as described by DJ Dmadness.

"For yall I have put together a new mix for the sunshine and beautiful summer weather we are having here in the Bay. No song defines that family bbq summer vibe like Roy Ayers' timeless cut "Everybody Loves the Sunshine," so in a documentarian effort I have compiled and mixed all the songs I knew of and could dig up that sampled, interpolated, or revisited those indelible vibraphones and simply perfect lyrics. I also took some liberties with a couple sun-themed blends. Much respect to Roy Ayers, and enjoy. 1neLuv.."
