Great Sunday morning read. Below is a sample.
"Your girlfriend will never understand you dragging her into an asthma inducing dump of a store to sift through records. You then remind her to shut the fuck up, because every time she dragged you into some store in the mall to look at some Tarot cards or some draws that are just gonna come off anyway, you suffered through it like a man. When a man is into digging for records, he puts his health (and life) on the line. I haven’t known anybody to die in the line of duty, but some of us have knocked a few years off of our lives by inhaling mold and funny looking dusts that can’t possibly be OSHA approved. Some people fly to strange countries just to dig, but I never went that far. I’m not a digging nerd, I have actual bills to pay. Believe it or not, I’ve gone record hunting on three different continents and my best stories are from local spots and junk yards right here in America. Sometimes it’s all about the experience, not the records." Read the full article here.
I'm not one to get caught-up in hype, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't excited for 9/8/09 and the drop of Cuban Linx II. Since OB4CLII drops the day before my birthday, and because I doubt my wife will know to buy the album for me, I think I'll buy this album as a present to self.

Here's a re-post of a Kon mix from the Fantastik 4our show that I thought didn't get the love that it deserved. So get it now if you missed it the first time around. Below is the original post.
Friday nights have never been the same since the Fantastik 4our show went off the air. Here is a show from August 27, 04, featuring DJ Kon of Kon and Amir fame. Enjoy...

For those of you who enjoyed my Doom mix, I guarantee you'll love this mix by my BlendingNations brother. Don't worry about Doom overkill because this mix focuses on blending various samples used by Doom. Happy Thursday!

I can't get enough of these Beat Junkie Radio videos. I study these videos like a college student studies their cheat sheet the night before the final exam. Right around the 22 minute mark J. Rocc really starts putting in work.

Perfect mix to get you through your Tuesday blues. Seamless mix of salsa, Afro-beat, soul, and funk. Enjoy...
Makossa Classics Vol. 1 - Mixed by DJ Wonway Posibul (download)
I've been meaning to do a Nate Dogg mix for a while now. Well, so much for that idea because my man Steve1der beat me to it. Nate has had a rough few years as of late, but nobody can deny that he is the godfather of the hip hop hook. Just check the discography (or this mix) and see how many hits dude is associated with. I still think that G-Funk Classics Vol. 1 is one of the most slept-on albums of all time. This mix does the man justice, props to Steve1der.

When I say this is a 1st class mix, I mean that it's a 1st class mix. That's all I've got to say.
**Some video of the mix below.

3 Legends (four, if you include Jeru on the camera) doing their thing live.
This video has Vinroc discussing his transformation from turntablist to producer and his decision to start his own record label.
No re-up this Friday. Instead, I thought I'd do something a little different and hit you all off with a non-hip hop mix by man Digumsmak. I hadn't heard of these dudes prior to listening to the mix, but that's what being a deejay is all about, exposing your listeners to music they wouldn't otherwise hear. So get ready to get your indie rock on and enjoy this mix. Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

Shouts to my man Kid Grebo for hooking me up with the second volume of his Paul C. tribute.

I saw these videos the other day posted on the okayplayer site. I thought some of the comments were pretty thoughtful (see below) and I am not really sure what side I'm on. However, there is one thing I do know. The so called "decline" of the music industry has lead to a resurrection of live music. Declining record sales has forced artists to do their thing live in order to pay the bills. I think this is a good thing because you've got to have skillz to perform live. Ain't no fakin the funk on a live stage. In any event, watch the below videos and comments and let me know what you all think.
all this live MPCing is simplistic, it ain't all that! its cool and everything, great to watch, I like it and respect it but it isn't some kind of revolutionary thing and years behind what the house and techno cats have been doing forever...
Excellent electro set from the least heralded (yet equally dope) Beat Junkie.
I read a little while back that Ameldabee put his tables on the shelf in favor of pursuing other musical forms of expression. If that's true, here's to hoping dude finds his way back to his tables.
Props to Kid Grebo for giving some much deserved shine to Paul C. For those of you not familiar with Paul C., names such as Large Professor, Domingo, Cut Chemist and Pete Rock all credit him as being a major influence in their development as producers. Read more here.

Is it me, or does vimeo completely suck. Every vimeo I play is always freezing and stuttering. Does anybody else have this problem? In any event, pretty cool video about vinyl if you can get it to play correctly.

You can't see Grandmaster Flash rock the breaks too many times. I've always wondered how much old school deejays pay the guy who hands them their records. Is it 5, 10, or even 25% of their appearance fee? Sounds trivial, but I'd really like to know.
This week's re-post consists of my favorite Tribe mix that some of you may not have been around for the first post around.

You all know that I'm a sucker for some studio footage. I guess I just love to see the spots where some of my favorite musical minds create.

Great interview of Havoc with him discussing his favorite production credits, his favorite producers, and Q-Tip's influence on The Infamous.
Part II
A few months back I went through Doom's entire catalog of material while flying across the country. After listening to Doom 24/7 for a good two weeks, I could just hear this mix coming together without ever laying hands on a turntable. This is what I ended-up mixing once I returned home and got back on my tables. Thank you to those of you who hooked me up with a couple of instrumentals that were essential to the making of this mix. Like all of my mixes, a lot of time, thought, and energy went into crafting this effort. I hope you all enjoy the mix as much as I enjoyed making it.
T-minus 24 hours until MF Doomed. Until then, enjoy this Muro mix.

Apparently, I'm not the only blogger who is not a fan of the people at Stonesthrow Records. Some bloggers have gotten so tired of the people at Stonesthrow taking down their Stonesthrow related mixes that they've resorted to posting Stonesthrow mixes with the above title. Now, I am not going to post the mix because I do respect Stonesthrow's prerogative to take down what they believe to be copyrighted material. However, I've never quite understood why the people at Stonesthrow Records have taken down mixes from this site (and others) where they themselves are posting the mix for free. Why can't I give away a mix if you're willing to give it away? Now, I guess I understand taking down the mix if it's a website traffic issue. However, I find it a little hypocritical that Stonesthrow Records is hiring people to track-down posted copyrighted material when many of their mixes contain material that they themselves do not own the copyrights to. For example, even with the beloved Thank You Jay Dee mixes, I bet that Stonesthrow doesn't have the legal permission to use Dilla's music that is copyrighted to MCA and Delicious Vinyl. Or, do you think Stonesthrow has the legal rights to all the music used in the Valentine's Day or Area Codes podcasts? I think not. In any event, I won't post the mix here, but I do think that all of you should know about the practices of one of your favorite record labels.
In memory of Baatin, DJ Rhettmatic puts down a very smooth SV mix. Enjoy (On my way to Rock the Bells)
This week's re-post is Questlove's Sample Lesson which was originally recorded live on Radio One. Even though this mix has been around the block more times than Paris Hilton, I thought is was worthy of a re-listen.

I always get a kick out of seeing classically trained musicians abstract the musicality of hip hop music into reinterpreted compositions. Just a thought, does uttering words like “Bout to start bitchin’ ain’t you / Ready to start snitchin’ ain’t you / I forgive your weak ass hustlin’ just ain’t you," in a church mean you go straight to hell?
Pretty simple concept for a breaks set, but I think it was very well executed. Hey, nobody said there are any rules against keeping it simple.
Excellent live, diverse mix by Stonesthrow's James Pants. Yes, I know the guy on the mic is a little annoying, but cut dude some slack because he is a big reason why the event and these mixes exist.

Every time I hear a Shortkut mix that I hadn't heard before I get mad at myself for overlooking him in my Mt. Rushmore of deejays.

I just read that Baatin of Slum Village passed away on July 31st. Not much is known about the cause of death at this time. Here is a link to the story in the Detroit Free Press. Condolences to all his family and friends.
Note to all MC's, a live band is the way to go. And that's coming from a deejay.
