Kenny Dope in Studio

Guru Tribute - Mixed by DJ Platurn & Joe Quixx

I wouldn't post another Guru tribute mix unless I thought it was worth your listen.  Guru gets the Oakland Fader treatment that incorporates some Gangstarr classics, some breaks, and that smoothed-out monotone flow.

Today marks a year since the passing of one of the illest voices in Hip-Hop, Guru of the almight Gang Starr posse. We pay homage to him with an episode filled with some choice cuts from past and present along with some of our favorite Gang Starr beats and breaks. His voice and cadence was classic and fit Premier's production like no other. He will be sorely missed." RIP GURU -- GANG STARR FOREVER!

Sade's Best Volume 1 - Mixed by DJ Styles

Some baby making music to get you through "hump" day.  Yeah, I know that was mad corny.

I made this mixtape back in 1994 on a cassette tape using real vinyl records. This mix has served me well through the years and may have been the soundtrack to my son's conception.

The Talib Kweli Mini-Mix - Mixed by Trackstar

To be honest, I haven't been checkin' for Kweli since the Reflection Eternal album. I'm not really sure why because it's not like he's really fallin' off. In any event, this mix is proof positive that I've been sleeping on some quality music right here.

Easter Eggs - Mixed by ByzeOne

I usually save my reggae for the weekend, but I'm feelin' a little laid back on this Monday morning so here goes nothing...

Reggae Mix * It's not the cleanest mix but it doesn't suck either.

Soliloquy of GangStarr - Mixed by Pipomixes (*Sticky*)

Yup, it's been a year since Guru passed away. Originally released by in 2008, I'm re-posting this mix to commemorate Guru's passing. Though the original description of the mix has little to do with Guru's death, I thought I'd include it just to give the mix a little context.

Making a GangStarr mix is a lot like making a pizza. It's difficult to royally screw up, but it's very easy to make it bland and forgettable. On the other hand, if you can make a great pizza there is nothing better in the world to eat. In creating this GangStarr mix, I am well aware that I am kinda, sorta, reinventing the wheel here. However, you may notice that there are countless Best of Primo mixes, but not many mixes devoted just to GangStarr. Anybody who is a Primo fan knows that he saved his best beats for the GangStarr albums. Enter, the whole theme of the mix. With this mix, I wanted to do exactly what the title suggests, create a soliloquy of GangStarr beats with a few Guru verses thrown-in here and there. In other words, shine a light on Primo's GangStarr production without boring an audience that is very familiar with the music, but still entertain that same audience with the quality of the mix.
With 31 tracks squeezed into just 33 minutes, the mix is a potent blend of 90% of the essential GangStarr tracks (I'll leave 10% for all of you to moan and groan about). While listening to the mix, I challenge you to think of any Hip Hop act who could fill 33 minutes (with 31 tracks no less) with the same level of quality music.

Message from Rob Swift: Trust Your Ear

Here's a very thoughtful essay written to upcoming deejays by Rob Swift.

Remember asking me about Traktor? - In layman's terms, Traktor is a software that bypasses vinyl and allows one to DJ straight off a laptop. It's similar to Rane's Serato Scratch Live. - As I proceeded to crush the dance floor with the help of my Serato Scratch Live, my weapon of choice, YOU made it a point to visit me in the DJ booth and proceeded to ask "Hey, ever used Traktor?" I said "no". YOU then encouraged me to try it out. I asked "why?" Your response was (and I'm paraphrasing) "because Traktor is so ill. It lets you mix by seeing wave forms. So you can basically line everything up perfectly with no fuck ups. It's amazing." Perplexed by your reasoning as to what makes Traktor so ill I asked "YOU don't mix by ear?" and your response was "With Traktor you don't need to. It's just much easier."

Life of Being a DJ Featuring DJ Revolution

If you don't follow Rev's twitter than you probably don't know that he is in the process of moving (more importantly, breaking down that beautiful homemade studio).  Not the most exciting thing in the world.  But, I thought a lot of you deejays would identify with the struggle (emotional and physical) of moving all of your gear (especially vinyl heads).  Always tough to rewire everything just right, organize all your gear in a new room, move all them records, clean up all the dust, deal with issues with new electrical wiring, the list goes on and on.  More pics after the jump if you're interested.

Skyway Sounds (1988) - Mixed by Jazzy Jim

I randomly found this mix just snooping around mixcrate.  This mix has that lovely 4-track sound.  Highly Recommended.

Skyway Sounds was a legendary DJ crew out of San Jose, CA, and this mix was put together in 1988 by their legendary DJ Jazzy Jim.
I found this cassette and transferred it to mp3, so the sound quality isn't great, but the skills more than make up for it.

Relics - Mixed by Nostalgia

Sorry folks, no download on this one (at least not the conventional kind). All sorts of wonderful London based jazz mixed together on this bad boy. Description of the mix below.

Ben Lamdin (aka Nostalgia 77) has a nice mix of tunes from some of the prominent artists in the underground London jazz scene; it’s a timely mix with our Jazz Issue on the horizon. Relics features tracks from his own label, Impossible Ark, as well as Babel, Loop, Grundle, and Ninja Tune, providing an cross section of the sounds of contemporary jazz in London including a couple unreleased gems such as “Dandelions” by Kaz Simmons and “Elephants” by the Skeletons.

Sample Breaks Part III - Mixed by DJ Hudson

A well crafted 30 minute break mix by DJ Hudson. Below is his description of the mix.

I like buying and listening to old records and a lot of them have nice bits that have been sampled on hip hop records so here's a mix I did one day which has a lot of these nice bits that have been used (along with some nice bits that haven't been used but could be). Feel free to leave comments and what not. Enjoy!!

The Humble Magnificent - Mixed by Fruitman

Very smooth mix of Edan classics. I think it's been a good 7-8 years since I last listened to Edan. Based on what I heard on this mix I'm not really sure why I stop peeping for him because his beats are right up my alley.

Mustache Soul - Mixed by Thes One

I just discovered Thes One's PL70 site the other day and found all sorts of gems. Thes is pretty smooth on the mix. I can't say I'm surprised given that most dope producers were also dope deejays in another lifetime. Below is the description of the mix.

Mustache Soul delves deep into the bizarre world of outsider drum machine soul from the late 70′s and early 1980′s. A mix by Thes One, all songs were taken from original vinyl pressings and the mix is an even hour of full curl power. And no, he can’t tell you what track number x is. The secret of the mustache is remaining tight lipped.

New Jack Swing #1 - Mixed by DJ Anonymous

I can't help hearing all these new jack swing mixes and feeling like I'm at an 8th grade dance all over again. Only thing missing is Guns N Roses' "November Rain" being played for a slow song. But, I guess that wouldn't be very new jack swingy.

J.-Rocc vs.J-Mann

Previously, on some Japan only ish. Now, on some internet only ish. In a related note, I just received my copy of J. Rocc's Some Cold Rock Stuf album. The album is absolute fire. The way Dilla made an album that sounded like a mixtape with Donuts, J. Rocc made a mixtape (though it's all original production) sound like an album. Hope that makes sense. Cop it here.

Spread Love - Mixed by DJ Apollo

Welcome back everybody!  Perfect mix to start the weekend.

This mix was recorded in the mid 90's, made for personal use only and was never released. This set was intended for easy listening, but can rock the dance floor as well. It's a collage of clever quick mixes, blends, cuts & acapella remixes, consisting of over 50 timeless classic tracks from hip hop to soul, funk, r&b and more.... a little something for everyone.
