How to Do a Break Mix (1983) - Grandmaster Flash
This is crazy! This looks like something taken from a straight PBS infomercial. Watch Flash break down all the intricacies of performing a break mix.
Kid Capri Live at Prospect Park
Yes, he has one of the more annoying twitter accounts on the planet, but dude wrote the book on party rocking. Enjoy

Hip Confession #14 - March 25, 1997

March 25th 1997
Context is everything, so here's a little background to my hip hop confession. It was my final semester in high school in March 1997 and I was attending a poor man's continuation school which no longer exists (the school was shutdown soon after my graduation). Actually, it was a rich man's high school. You see, I wasn't always the upstanding citizen that I am today. Your boy Pipo got himself kicked out of high school for slangin' dime sacks of "oregano" to some high school snitches. It wasn't exactly a sting operation on the level of the Bin Laden raid. Just some freshman that seemed to have an insatiable appetite for "oregano" and a seemingly endless supply of ten dollar bills. I was too stupid to know any better so I happily supplied to meet the demand until one day a bunch of 21 Jump Street assholes came out of the bushes and cuffed your favorite blogger. To make a long story short, I didn't just get kicked out of my high school, I was such a gigantic fuck up that I wasn't even allowed to attend the local continuation high school with all the other fuck ups. The 21 Jump Street folk really had me by the balls because dumb ass me decided to get caught after my 18th birthday. Being 18 didn't just mean that I was the lucky lottery ticket holder to a one way ticket to big boys jail, it also meant that my local school district was no longer obligated to educate my ignorant self.
I didn't grow up rich, but I certainly didn't grow up poor. Fortunately for me, my parents had the means to pay some lawyers who performed some courtroom voodoo to help me avoid being called Shirley in some state penitentiary. Now, the whole school thing was a little more complicated than I'm leading on, but I don't want to bore you with details. So, why am I telling you all this? Well, to understand the significance of March 25, 1997, you've got to understand how I ended up where I ended up on this memorable date in hip hop history. Make sense yet? Not really, but it will.
Best of Perception & Today Records - Mixed by DJ Chris Read
20 minutes in and all I can say is WOW! Before you all ask, offliberty.com is your friend.
In April 2012 BBE records released the 'Best of Perception & Today Records' compilation album, compiled by DJ Spinna & the BBE soundsystem, a diverse collection of tracks released during the late 60s and early 70s by two associated labels spanning Funk, Soul, Jazz, Rock & more. From Dizzy Gillespie to Wanda Robinson the Perception & Today catalogue has been sampled by the likes of the Beatnuts, Ghostface, BDP, Dilla and many others besides. Both Spinna and I produced mixes to promote the release which were originally released to together via the BBE Records page back in April. Here is my mix on its own for those who may have missed it!
X-Men at WNYU
A few thoughts: Shame on a blogger for not recognizing the day we lost a true deejay pioneer. This is the highpoint of the whole turntablist movement in my opinion. I lost interest once it became more technical (becoming more technique than soul) than this.
Crate Diggers - Cut Chemist
If deejays ruled the world there would be a new episode at least once a week. There are enough deejays to the point a web series for a cable station exists.
E.T. Extra Twisted - Mixed by Cut Chemist
I have not heard the mix yet, but I can feel confident about Highly Recommending any Cut Chemist mix.
Cut Chemist returns with a live mix at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for Cinespia's screening of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial in 2011. Ive chosen to share it now to celebrate 20 years since its release. Psychadelic space and 80s classics mix (Edit..ehem) because who needs to hear two whole verses of Kim Wilde nowadays?!?
"...E.T. Touch Down!!!"
Naslib - Mixed by DJ Serv1
I'm kinda slow. This mix has been sitting in my inbox for sometime now because I'm too stupid to read like a literate human being. I thought the title, "Naslib" implied that the mix is some kind of African themed mix. I've got nothing against African mixes, but I normally have to listen to those mixes with a more careful ear to determine whether they are dope or not. Little did I know (because I can't read so well), the mix is a blend tape that masterfully layers Nas vocals over Madlib beats. Though the concept is simple enough, it's a tough one to do well. Props to Serv1 for pulling it off.
Digging (September 2012) - Mixed by DJ Ian Head
Ian Head's mixes always have certain sound of authenticity that always seems to appeal to my ear. This mix is no different. In fact, I'd argue that this is certainly one of his best. Enjoy.
There’s this short film about a guy in Pittsburgh who has amassed the largest record collection ever. He calls it “The Archive.” In the movie, he says that the Library of Congress did a study of his collection, and found that for records released between the years 1948 - 1966, only 17% of that music is available on CD.
This guy has over two-million records, so that’s a crazy number. It means 83% of the music in his collection over a span of eighteen years has mostly been forgotten in the digital age. It makes you wonder how much - or little - music from any given year may end up being “timeless,” or how long it takes for a song or album before it becomes forgotten, buried beneath hundreds and thousands of others decades later.
But for us record nerds, there’s a certain kind of excitement too. It means a lot of undiscovered treasure, treasure only available on vinyl. It’s the kind of thing that inspires me to go out next weekend and keep looking through crusty stacks of LPs for some artist or label I’ve never seen before, some obscure b-side I never knew about.
Since I was a kid, I’ve always been a collector - coins, toys, baseball cards, etc - but records were a way for me to move past being just another obsessive hoarder. The joy of records is playing them - not only for yourself, but especially with others.
For the past five years, I have created and distributed at least one mixtape every single month, via the internets. I did this mainly for two reasons: as a challenge to myself, to do something creative on a consistent basis; and to play all these crazy records I’d been amassing. Records that because of my eclectic taste, I might not be able to fit on one or two mixtapes. Records that you can’t really dance to, or records that I would dance to but most people probably wouldn’t. Records that had important meaning to me but might not fit within cliche definitions of “hip-hop.”
This latest tape carries that theme - I just wanted to play some of my favorite joints plus some classic breaks I don’t usually play, and intersperse a few vocal clips of people talking about why they love records. It kind of floats through various genres and hopefully is a fun sort of compilation of my continuing digging adventures. Shout out to Ani for the photo used on the cover.
Playin' Kinda Ruff (Troutman Legacy) - Mixed by DJ B.Cause
I'm a Troutman fan like the next guy, but for some reason the thought of a Troutman mix sounded a little stale to me. Because I trust DJ B.Cause's skills I gave the mix a listen just to see how long I'd last and I've got to admit the mix is FIRE!!!!!
Soul Builders 2 - Mixed by Mathew Africa & DJ B.Cause
A damn shame that it took a tragedy for me to deliver the most requested mix that I was never able post (until now) in this blog's history.
Some New York City Rap Part 2 - Mixed by Omega:NYC
The title says it all. Expect to hear some NYC joints you know, some you forgot even existed, and others you slept on. As with all Omega:NYC mixes, you'll get nothing but top quality mixing here with seamless blends and clean cuts. Enjoy.
Delicious Vinyl 25th Anniversary Mix - Mixed by Pete Rock
The Stussy x Delicious Vinyl Collection celebrates the 25th Anniversary of the LA-based record label. The minor label started in the late 80s and became a major figure in the evolution of hip-hop through the early 90s with acts such as The Pharcyde, Masta Ace, Tone Loc, The Whoridas, Young MC and Brand New Heavies. I still remember look for those distinct Delicious Vinyl record sleeves at the record store back in the day.
Mathew Africa R.I.P.
While surfing the web over the weekend I learned that Bay Area deejay, Mathew Africa died last week. Mathew Africa's mixes are a favorite of many who frequent this blog. I didn't know him personally, but I did know that he was a regular visitor of this blog because I would receive an email thanking me for posting his mixes each and every single time one of his mixes would grace the blog. I think all deejays share two characteristics, a passion for music and a very strong aspiration to be heard. Clearly, Mathew Africa's life was way too short. To honor him I encourage all of you to hear him via his blog and podomatic page.
Crate Diggers: J. Rocc's Vinyl Collection
This is the Crate Diggers episode that we have all been waiting for. The 12:49 of footage gives you a pretty good glimpse of J. Rocc's record collection and home studio setup. I'd still like to see more angles so I can determine once and for all whether his setup is just a house that is completely designed around records and recording gear, or whether all that stuff is just in one big room, or whether it's a converted garage. Whatever the case, the video provides some vinyl nerdom gems such as J. Rocc's vinyl cleaning machine and some kind of contraption that un-warps warped vinyl. Enjoy.
Sucker for Love Part 2 - Mixed by Mike Who
Maybe I'm posting this mix because my wedding anniversary has feeling all sentimental. Or, maybe I'm posting this mix because it's f*cking dope. I'll tell you this, only the movie Rudy gets this blogger all sentimental. Description of the mix below.
After a year long wait i can finally share with all fam Sucker For Love Volume 2. This is the follow up to last years much loved Vol 1. The mix is again a selection of some of my favorite tunes based on the theme of love, spanning everything from Soul, Funk, Hip Hop and RnB to Garage, Bass, Disco and New Jack Swing, with of course a side serve of shameless cheese. Once again big Love to the homies from Well Dressed Vandals for coming through with the cover.
Also mega thanks to Acclaim magazine for running an exclusive of the mix on their blog. Which you can check here

Rootdown Soundclash: Oh No vs. Exile
Many of you seemed to enjoy the Thes-One vs. Will I.Am battle that was posted a couple weeks ago. Here's another battle featuring some of your favorite producers from that same DVD. Personally, I think the Thes-One/Will I. Am battle sons this one, but some of you may disagree.
Scratch Documentary
I assume that all of you on this blog have seen this documentary more times than Leave it to Beaver re-runs. I just finished watching this classic turntablism documentary for the first time in almost 10 years. I remember watching this documentary on loop back 2002. I bought this DVD at the same time that I moved out of my parents house and into a 1 bedroom L.A. apartment with my then girlfriend. I lasted a whole 3 days with my then girlfriend before I got booted from the apartment. I then moved into my own apartment with nothing more than my turntables, computer, 18" tube t.v., a beanbag, a PS2, and this DVD. Because I had no cable at the time, my only source of entertainment was watching my beloved Scratch DVD over and over again. Needless to say, the documentary holds a special place in my heart for more reasons than one. If it were all up to me, I'd love to see a version of the film with less focus on ISP and communicating with aliens, and more footage devoted to the X-Men and Beat Junkies. Either way, the film really takes me down memory lane. In case any of you are wondering what happened to that ruthless maneater who booted me after just 3 days in the crib, we are celebrating 8 years married today. Go figure?
Solid Steel Radio Show 31/8/2012 Part 1 + 2 - DJ Cheeba + DJ Moneyshot + DJ Food
I'm only about 20 minutes through, but the concept plus the 20 minutes I've heard are more than enough to give this excellent mix a post. Description of the mix below.
Solid Steel in association with Serato (31st August) 3 years ago Solid Steel DJs Cheeba, Moneyshot and Food had the idea of collaborating on a version of the Beastie Boys‘ ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album made entirely from the original sample sources, shortly after Moneyshot aired his mix of their ‘Check Your Head’ album in the same way.
Finally the result is here, titled ‘Caught In The Middle Of A 3-Way Mix’ - each of them have taken a third of the album to work on and combined their efforts into a mix that will make you hear it in a new way. Aside from the original sample sources they’ve included commentary from the Beasties, vintage interviews, demo versions and much more.
The mix was over half way completed when they heard the tragic news of MCA‘s death in May so the impetus to finish it was instantly doubled and new meaning given to the project. It goes without saying that this is also a tribute to Adam Yauch and the legacy he left behind and we hope it will be embraced by Beastie fans around the globe.
