Young Guru & 9th Wonder Discuss You Know What by You Know Who
Man, all this talk is out of control. As I've written earlier, Kendrick Lamar is one of the few newer MCs that I'm actually feelin'. With that said, everybody just needs to relax a little. I guess all the hoopla just shows how thirsty everybody has been for a decent verse. One decent battle type verse and the whole hip hop world is in a frenzy. Personally, I think all the excitement about hip hop being back blah blah blah is way overstated. Too many place far too much emphasis on what is being played on the radio. In the age of soundcloud, youtube, spotify, blogs, and all other musical outlets, does anybody even listen to the radio anymore? Producers and MCs caring about what type of rap is being played on the radio is equivalent to television writers and directors caring about network TV programing in the age of AMC, HBO, Showtime, and Netflix. The thinking is just sooooo 1990's. My two cents, this is just another example of New York being the center of the media world. I bet the now infamous verse would not have received half the attention it has received if not for the King of NYC claim. Feel free to ignore this post.

Hip Hop has failed to evolve. And at the same time, most of the musicality has drained out of the music. I listen to that track and I think "Where's the music?" To me, it's not very musical. Nothing about it is catchy. It sounds procedural (as if someone made the track based on written instructions). I don't hear any deeper meaning or spirit in the sounds. And the lyrics are neither enjoyable, nor empowering, nor cathartic. It's just a noisy soapbox speech. The network TV comparison is very relevant audience. Of course... this is just my own humble opinion. ;-)
I agree with Eric Nord, I just don't see the funk in it. It kind of reminds me of rappers like Immortal Technique or Canibus who can say a lot of crazy shit and make it rhyme but it just doesn't grab me in terms of having a funky, musical flow.
I agree Mike... also I feel that there's a lot of guys like tech and canibus that are better than kendrick at that sort of thing.
I don't hear kendrick lamar doing anything newish or hard or really special in any way. To me, everything he does is notable only by how not bad it is.
I agree with both of you too, and what I said about kendrick is just indicative of this. All this shit these days is for the most part, bland and contrived.
Was "Control" produced by No I.D.?
Yes.
"Notable by how not bad it is." HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I can't believe grown men actually get riled up over song lyrics. It's music, that's all it is. At the end of the day, a song doesn't play any kind role in our lives. Well. Unless you work in the music industry lol
