Soulection Radio #172: Featuring DJ Rhettmatic
Soulection Radio is an excellent program that appears weekly on one of the few great FM stations still on the dial, KJazz 88.1. You can read after the jump for a description of the show, tracklists, and set times. I highly recommend listening to all 3 hours of the show when you have time and checking Soulection Radio's soundcloud page for additional show recordings and exclusive sets.
Half Man Half Amazing Tribute - Mixed by DJ Moneyshot
This is an incredible mix from beginning to end. I can't recommend this mix highly enough.
Solid Steel (25th April) 20 years ago Nas released his legendary Illmatic album and DJ Moneyshot has put together an outstanding tribute mix 'Nas - Half-Man Half-Amazing'. As with the previous tribute mixes for the Beastie Boys, De La Soul and Public Enemy, it's more an audio documentary threading together sample sources, interview footage and remixes alongside the original Illmatic tracks. Hear the vocabulary, the flow and the rhythm expertly delivered by Nas, backed up by the sublime production of Pete Rock, DJ Premier, Large Professor and Q-Tip, plus original samples from Lee Erwin, The Heath Brothers, Ahmad Jamal and Reuben Wilson. All this deconstructed and rebuilt by Moneyshot for another classic Solid Steel edition.
Check out the Solid Steel website here
and you can follow Solid Steel on Facebook and the brand new Twitter feed.

A-Trak's Home Studio
The intended purpose of the video is the not so subtle product placement of Sonos. Big freaking deal, somebody is trying to sell you something. Now, tell me the sun rises in the east. With all the advertising now out in the open, the video allows you to get a good glimpse of A-Trak's crib and home studio. By the looks of it, it's pretty clear that mixing pays, at least for some. It also looks like I need to make sure that my wife and A-Trak are never in the same room because it appears that dude is as big of a mid-century modern fan as Mrs. Mixes. Final thought: Just when I was getting over my envy of the niceness of A-Trak's crib, he had to go throw in that "while I make brussels sprouts in the kitchen" comment. Dude not only has a nicer crib than you, but he eats healthier than you too. Take that!
The Playground Legends - Suits & Tigers (The Gratuity 1 Year Anniversary Mixtape)
The Playground Legends [DJ Son, Maple Syrup, DJ Dos-A & Van Valey] decided to put together a crew mixtape to celebrate the one year anniversary of their weekly party, Gratuity. Similar to the popular Do-Over and Boiler Room parties, Gratuity entrusts talented DJs to create great moments and share the groove with all party goers in attendance. DJs are never told what to play, they are just told to have fun at all times. The result is a really unique and positive family of music lovers who come together every Thursday night at The Room, SM to dance and laugh and play Jenga and smile.
In an unrelated, related note; the very first time Pipomixes ever touched a pair of turntables was at The Room, Santa Monica. His very first song selection? 2pac's "Hit em Up" of course. Safe to say that Pipomixes was never invited back.

Five highly absorbed months of compiling later and, at last, we have the finest, truest definition of modern soul yet – Soul Love 2014. No effort has been spared in bringing this album together, all corners of the globe scoured over much of last year for 25 contemporary cuts of exquisite groove, musicianship and emotion.
Here they now are, Soul Love 2014 throwing together smooth glides, funky grinds, peppy beat- downs and whipsmart house riffs by everyone from UK scene stalwarts Omar, Caron Wheeler, Tony Momrelle and Don-E to US thoroughbreds Eric Roberson, The Foreign Exchange and Marc Evans via white-hot youngbloods like Portia Monique, Lady, Chris Turner, Eric Lau, Debra Debs and Chaz Shepherd. This collective platform for soul music’s latest generation of stars really delivers sounds on the frontier, and reinforces just how bright the future really is.
Also including a bonus DJ Mix by Brooklyn legend DJ Spinna, Soul Love 2014 is a project all about moving forward; about distinguishing itself from the overload of compilations treading the same old soul clichés by celebrating a younger, fresher, totally inspiring new line-up of music-makers. Travelling from London to LA via Philly, Stockholm to Johannesburg and even, surprisingly, the frosty climes of Helsinki (courtesy of talented hip-hop-flecked trio Dolla Lova), Soul Love 2014 is an exhilarating global showcase of what exactly makes modern soul tick.
A big-up to the soul heroes of today and tomorrow - the most comprehensive yet compiled – it reflects utterly relevant and energised song-craft able to strike deep at heart and mind.

DJ Jazzy Jeff - Boiler Room, London
Watching/listening to the mix for the first time as I type. Given that it's a Boiler Room mix, I'd expect an open format type of mix from Jeff (which I consider to be a good thing). I think the Boiler Room videos have now replaced the old Do-Over videos in terms of people watching. In other words, feel free to get your "judge" on in the comments section. Mix starts at the 13 minute mark. For those wanting the audio, it appears that Boiler Room now requires you to register with their website to download the audio (go here). No more just downloading/streaming from soundcloud (I think). Not the end of the world, but not as convenient as soundcloud IMO. Highly Recommended (so far: 10 minutes in)
G-Funk Era - Mixed by DJ Wax On
This is not one of those G-Funk mixes that mistakenly thinks all things G-Funk begin and end with Dr. Dre. In fact, very little of Dr. Dre's production catalog would be considered "G-Funk." The real godfather of G-Funk is Warren G. This mix gets it right. A lot of golden era G-Funk here. Those in the know, know that includes a lot of early Warren G, Twinz, Nate Dogg, Dogg Pound, and similarly influenced tracks. One critique though, a G-Funk mix with no Dove Shack? I guess there's always volume 2.
First Word Records x Record Store Day - Nothing Leaves The House
Mr. Thing opens up his record collection and gives free reign to Kidkanevil, Tall Black Guy, and Eric Lau. The video has all sorts of amazing shots of Mr. Thing's vinyl collection and home studio. I've got to track down one of those Moment of Truth posters yesterday. Props to Hector V for the look out.
On a Saturday morning at the start of November 2013, First Word Records took 3 of our favourite producers out of London to spend the day browsing through the vinyl shelves of the biggest record nerd we know - the incomparable Mr Thing.
This was the culmination of an idea that first manifested itself on Record Store Day 2012. Like most ideas it was a natural conclusion to a conversation about records and music - kidkanevil had expressed a desire to dig through Mr Thing's sizeable collection for some inspiration. Chatting to Mr Thing it seemed unfair to limit this to only one producer - Tall Black Guy and Eric Lau were top of our wish list.
So - a double 7" (Mr Thing would make a beat too - they are his records after all) in time for Record Store Day 2013 (yes, we're a year late). There was however one stipulation about the records from the usually mild-mannered Mr Thing:
'The guys can sample anything they like, but Nothing Leaves The House....'
And who were we to argue.....
The result is four tracks that celebrate our love for record digging, sample chopping and the simple love of a dope beat.
This video gives you a taste of what went on!

In Case You Didn't Already Know...
I've got two things to say in response to De La Soul planting 100 copies of the instrumental LP of "Smell the D.A.I.S.Y." within NYC, L.A., Chicago, Detroit, and San Francisco area records stores. One, De La is so f*cking true to the culture in everything they do and how they do it. Two, this is going to be one huge cluster f*ck. Good luck to anyone who's going after these because my guess is that you'll have a bitter taste regardless of whether you come up with a copy or not. Regardless of the outcome, an excellent to idea to promote vinyl, record stores, De La, and Dilla.
We are happy to announce the release of the limited edition vinyl of “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” in-stores 4/18. The vinyl will be a all instrumental version of the “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” project. It contains 12 tracks that include all 11 of the “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” instrumentals plus one exclusive never heard before J Dilla beat.
We decided to release a all instrumental version of “Smell The Da.I.S.Y.” to give people the experience of a J Dilla beat tape that we were so lucky to receive. These beat tapes were the springboard that generated creation and generated inspiration for us.The vinyl release is very, very limited, only 100 copies will be released to stores, to resemble the limited amount of beat tapes that Dilla would send out to artists like Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Talib Kweli, Common, Mos Def, Busta, and De La.Dilla was a heavy crate digger that scoured the earth digging for exclusive vinyl to sample, and if you want this vinyl project you’ll have to dig the same. We are not releasing the record store information so if you would like to find a copy go to www.wearedelasoul.com for clues and also our Twitter, Instagram and Facebook pages for the vinyl whereabouts. Happy digging!
Taster's Choice 1.3 - Mixed by J. Rocc
A live version of J. Rocc's Taster Choice series. Shout-out to all the readers who were on the blog back when there was that 15 minute J. Rocc v. Pipomixes feud. Shout-out to J. Rocc who is the undisputed favorite deejay of the blog (and known fan of the blog as well ;)). Enjoy.

I'm always a little skeptical with all of these posthumous releases of anything Dilla. I think Donuts has been re-released in some shape or form at least three times since 2006. For that reason, I wasn't really paying too much attention to the fact that Dilla's Donuts got the 33 1/3 classic album book treatment. At least, not until I read this excerpt posted on Stonesthrow's website. I just finished ordering the book and I suspect many of you may do the same. If this kind of read interests you, I highly recommend you buy Brian Coleman's Check the Technique book as well. Coleman's liner notes on many of our favorite classic hip hop albums is an absolute must read for any hip hop nerd.
Illmatic at 20: 3 Part Series by Fuse
Yes, all the Illmatic commemoration is slightly annoying; but there are far worse things that could be getting all this attention. Parts 2 and 3 after the jump.
Trapped - Mixed by AbcntMnded
This is an incredibly refreshing mix. It's hard to describe what is so enjoyable about this mix because on the surface; it would appear to be nothing more than a mix of dope, lesser played hip hop cuts (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). However, the mix is much more than that. Though 90's influenced, most of the cuts are from newer releases that could be mistakenly pegged as 90's music if heard by the untrained ear. The mixing style is also unique in of itself. Quality blends seamlessly transitioning different verses from different tracks halfway through a verse instead of at the predictable chorus/bridge section of a song. Mixes like this should be commended. Simple, but different. Highly Recommended.
Spring (Mixtape) - Mixed by DJ Ian Head
My man Ian Head concludes his season inspired mixtape series with this crate diggin', vinyl crackling gem. Perfect to just cool out to (which is what I'm doing right now as I try to get over the depression of it being back to work Monday in just a few short hours).
A warm sun finally came out this weekend in NYC and the time felt right to drop the Spring mixtape. After the non-stop barrage of cold weather these past few months, I tried to keep things upbeat and bright, a gathering of mostly-instrumental vinyl selections I've picked up recently and not-so-recently. I hope you play it with the breeze blowing in through the apartment windows you've finally cracked open.
This is the last piece of my four-part "seasonal" mixtape series, and once again I am blessed to have an incredible photographer donate some of her work for the cover. Everyone should check out the beautiful photography of Hong-An Tran at www.hongantran.com/ and ruinista.com/. Seriously good.
Again no tracklisting on this one. For those curious about the records used, there's a few clues on my Instagram.
Madlib Makes a Beat from Scratch
Pretty cool video from Vice Media that has Madlib making a beat from scratch using a drum kit, CDJs, and a keyboard. Though the video and set-up look very "clean" and polished, you can see how Madlib's production process often results in that very grimy sound we all love so much.
Behind the Beats Presents: Bink!
One of the more heralded, below the radar producers of the late 90s/early 2000s hip hop sound, sits down for an extended conversation with the folks at Behind the Beats. As with all BtB interviews, expect a thorough discussion of Bink's production techniques, musical philosophy, and musical background/influences. The long form interview also gives all you gear heads several opportunities to analyze Bink's tools of the trade. Enjoy
Looper Vandross Vol. 1 - Mixed by Mr. Choc
Overall, this is a great mix with a lot of work noticeably put in. Of course, the theme is near and dear to my heart because a certain blogger did a similar style mix a few years back. Enjoy.
Looper Vandross Volume 1! Feat songs and loops from Mayer Hawthorne, Abstract and The Dragon, Jhene Aiko, Bob James, Step Brothers, Kaytranada, J Dilla, Musiq, Beyonce, Nate Dogg, Mobb Deep, Esta, Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar, 2 Chainz, Outkast, Jay Z, Dam-Funk & Snoop Dogg, Drake, and much more. Enjoy!!
Roc Marciano's Recording Process
I stumbled upon this interview over at Nahright and thought many of you would enjoy it. The interview has some pics from Roc's set-up and covers an array of topics pertaining to his recording process. Roc discusses his equipment, the food and clothes he wears when recording, the timing of his sessions, crate diggin', L.A. v. NYC, the influence of Pete Rock, and much more. Read interview HERE.
DJ Spinna Frank Knuckles Tribute Mix
I'm not the biggest House fan, so a lot of these Frank Knuckles tributes are flying right over my ignant head. If you're like me, then I suggest you listen to this mix. Highly recommended listening if you want to pay tribute to a legend, but are not necessarily educated enough in House music to appreciate what Frank Knuckles created. Description, tracklist, and part 2 of the mix after the jump.
LEFTO Boiler Room London DJ Set
Between this and J. Rocc's Boiler Room mix from the other day, I don't know which is inspiring me more. I know there are a lot of Lefto fans out there. To be honest, most of the Lefto mixes I've heard have been a little too "Housie" for my taste. But this mix right here is straight up my alley. I'd be grateful to any of you who could point me in the direction of more Lefto mixes that are on this type of vibe. Highly Recommended.
**Update: Perhaps I'm confusing Lefto with Diplo. Either way, more Lefto mixes would be appreciated.
J. Rocc - Boiler Room London
I hesitate to say that this is the best live J.Rocc set I've seen/heard because there are so many good ones. But, if there's a better one, I'd like to hear it. Highly Recommended.
Rhythm Roulette: Black Milk
The combination of Black Milk's home studio setup and the beat made in this RR episode, served as great inspiration for me.
Blood Money - Nighttime Gangster Jazz - Mixed by Mr. Tobes & DJ Wax On
This mix just reeks of the vibe that you get from the score to the Scorsese classic, Taxi Driver. In my opinion, this mix is best enjoyed with the sound down, headphones on, and some grimy visuals within eye shot (may I recommend Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, or French Connection on mute). Highly Recommended.
Everyone needs their own theme music, including cold blooded killers, psychopathic gangsters and hitmen for hire.
Enter Blood Money, a duo made up of R&B music maestro TOBES (taking a break from his Sparkle Motion duties) and the always impressive crate digger DJ Wax On - who give us 'Nighttime Gangster Jazz: Music for Smooth Criminals', a 60 minute mix of 70s & 80s mellow jazz grooves that provide a soundtrack to the most illegal of nocturnal activities.
From familiar classics to golden obscurities, library gems to soundtrack rarities, take a trip through a loaded barrel-full of deadly tracks... all interspersed with classic gangster movie dialogue. Play this one only at night, and keep an eye over your shoulder when you do.

Gaslamp Killer and Just Blaze: Live 2x4 Set (kind of) at SXSW
Let me first say that this is a very high quality 2x4 set from Gaslamp Killer and Just Blaze. Then, let me say that I'm a fan of Just Blaze's production. With that said, why does Just Blaze use CDJs? I'll admit, he's kind of nice on them thangs. But, why does a dude who has a massive vinyl collection and is knee deep in vinyl culture, use CDJs as his preferred instrument? Look, I'm not a CDJ hater per say. Or at least, I'm not as big of a hater as I was in the late 90's. Fortunately for CDJs worldwide, the disgrace of the ever growing computer deejay has catapulted the CDJ to a level of respectability never before seen. So, I'm not hatin' for the sake of hating. I'm more like wondering. Why buy all those records and spin CDs? Why not then immerse yourself into CDs and get featured in Disc Diggers instead of Crate Diggers?
