Discogs Mix #55 - Mixed by Ohmega Watts

Ohmega Watts - ‘2016, A Retrospect’
Tracklist here: blog.discogs.com/en/discogs-mix-55-ohmega-watts/
Ohmega Watts was born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, and has lived in Florida and the Pacific Northwest since 2001. Producing since 1997 and MCing since 1993, the Ohmega Watts resume includes two solo records on Ubiquity, The Find (2005) and Watts Happening (2007), along with his third solo, Pieces Of A Dream (2013) on Mellow Orange Music, a west coast label that he’s currently on and a representative for. Additionally, he’s an MC and producer for the group Lightheaded (Tres Records), and his discography also includes a 7″ under the name M64, which was comprised of Ohmega on production and Ragen Fykes on vocals, released by Record Breakin’ Music (2009.) Ohmega is also an avid DJ who has toured extensively in the U.S. and abroad including Australia, the E.U. and Japan, all the while expanding his record collection and musical influences. He’s performed, DJ’d alongside, and supported artists/bands including: De La Soul, Galactic, Breakestra, Quantic, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Waajeed, Ge-Ology, Kon & Amir, DJ Spinna, Bobbito, Rich Medina, Cosmo Baker, and the list goes on. He’s also a freelance Graphic Designer/Art-Director/Photographer making him a full-time creative.
From Ohmega:
"I wanted to create a multi-genre mix looking back on 2016, but not a best-of list, moreso pulling tracks that can blend seamlessly well while transitioning genres and song feel. Not an easy feat, as there were a lot of great releases this year, between records or digital singles/albums I copped and vast amount of promo releases I get through an entire year, via a few promo pools. It took a minute to get the BLENDS just right in selection as well as context of vocals atop tracks. Thanks in advance for listening and I hope you find some new artists to follow. Props to every artist and friend on this mix, keep making the music we can live to."

Discogs Mix #61 - Mixed by FredFades

I'd like to think FredFades was first discovered right here on this blog.

Fredfades – High-End Lo-fi Jams
Tracklist available here: blog.discogs.com/en/discogs-mix-61-fredfades/
Fredfades is a 29-year old producer, DJ, and artist originating from Oslo, Norway. A heavy collector of Jazz and Modern Soul, Fred has been digging in the crates for over 15 years. His solo debut album, Warmth, dropped this past June 2017, via UK’s KingUnderground Records. Preceding his solo debut, Fred had already made a name for himself in indie Hip-Hop circles worldwide, releasing several 7″s, as well as a widely regarded collaborative album with fellow Norwegian, rapper Ivan Ave (2015’s Fruitful). Fred also runs the Oslo-based label Mutual Intentions, which houses a musical and visual artist collective of the same name. With eight releases under their belt thus far, including five in 2017 already, Mutual Intentions looks to release a slew of new material in the coming months, from House, to New Age, to reissues.
Fredfades had the following to say about his Discogs mix:
"I’ve always been into these super homemade, mega fragile synthesizer Modern Soul jams, so I thought I should make a mix of them. The original idea came to me when I did a Red Light Radio mix last summer, cause I’ve really been spinning the recording of that a lot. When I went to Amsterdam I didn’t get the chance to bring any LPs, so the mix was all 7”s. And it was live so it wasn’t really planned yet. And there were a few things I would have done different if I could. That’s why I wanted to do this mix when you guys over at Discogs asked me, and of course I’ve been buying some killer records since that RLR mix also."
On Discogs Mix 61, Fredfades shows and proves that he's a real deal crate digger with his collection of extremely rare outsider Soul tracks! Most of these show many more Wants than Haves on Discogs, and some of these obscurities and curiosities have a Sales History in the hundreds of dollars.

The Unseen Mixtape - Mixed by DJ Rhettmatic

Speaking of the The Unseen doc.  Here's a Rhettmatic mix of beats from the documentary that also inexplicably stayed off my radar.

QFT Cut Beats of Mind (Beat Scene Doc)

QFT Cut beatsofmind from Passerby on Vimeo.

Excellent mini-documentary of the L.A. Beat Scene by the same filmmaker who produced The Unseen and All Ears (Gus Sutherland).  QFT mostly focuses on Ras G and Kutmah.  The video is over four years old, but somehow escaped my radar (and probably yours as well).

Help is On the Way (Discogs Mix 062) - Mixed By DJ Platurn

DJ Platurn - Help Is On The Way: A Native Tongues Inspired Disco Mix

Tracklist available here: blog.discogs.com/en/discogs-mix-62-dj-platurn/

A 23 year veteran of the music industry, DJ Platurn has traveled the world many times over bringing phenomenal music to multiple corners of the globe. Through his travels, he’s built a reputation as a tastemaker with vision and a sense of community and in turn preserving crucial aspects of DJ and music culture. Founder of the Oakland Faders and The 45 Sessions, the man is just getting started. With a few very popular A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul tribute mixes under his belt, we were excited when he proposed the theme for his exclusive contribution to the Discogs mix series: A Native Tongues Inspired Disco Mix.

Platurn had the following to say about his mix:

Two Tribe and two De La mixes deep, I wanted to try my hand at all the uptempo disco type joints the Natives have sampled over the years. Primarily all 12″ versions, edited and with some at-liberty sprinkles on top, I let the grooves breathe and stepped back on the heavy tech. Nothing crazy rare going on here, just good music with the classic dance floor vibe in mind. After all these years, the NT catalog of breaks never ceases to amaze, and the roller skate OGs stand alone tough as anything out. Slap it on whenever and wherever — it’s sure to make you get up and dance.

So, whether you are a Native Tongues fan (ATCQ, De La, Jungle Brothers, Black Sheep, et. al.), a breaks/samples head, or a disco fan (why not all three?), DJ Platurn’s “Help Is On The Way” is guaranteed to brighten your day!

Native Tongues at the Disco - Mixed by DJ Ian Head

If you didn't get this the first time around, it is Highly Recommended you get it this time around.

Summer 2017 Mixtape - Mixed by DJ Ian Head

DJ Ian Head from the Pullin' from the Stacks podcast, gets busy on the 1s&2s.  Ian Head's mixes are of the highest quality, and his latest is no exception.

Thirty minutes of upbeat musical goodness for the hot summer days - various treats old and new, from Yasiin Bey to Solange to Moodymann.

DJ Mell Starr The Most Dangerous at TOCA TUESDAYS (2016)

I suggest watching this video in a place far, far away from your turntables.  There's no way you get through the whole set watching near your tables, because the set is so dope that you'll want to jump right on them tables to mimic the dopeness.

#5MinutesOfFunk (010) - Technician The DJ

The whole set is absolutely insane.  However, I favorite part is the first few minutes where a bunch slower songs are cut-up.  Not a lot of deejays cutting-up and rocking doubles with slower tempo songs.

Golden Era of Hip Hop Vol. 3 Podcast - Mixed by Krafty Kuts

I normally shy away from "Golden Era" mixes because the wheel can only be reinvented so many times.  However, I saw this mix reposted by several heads who's ear I hold in high regard.  My goodness, this is insanely good.  Seamless transitions, and blends that compliment each other better than peanut-butter and jelly.  The blends are so good that Nas' Nastradamus actually sounded good (like, very good) when layered over Gravediggaz's 1-800-Suicide.  Mix of the Year good!  Highly Recommended.

So after months of careful preparation and hours of digging I bring to you the final instalment of my Golden Era Hip Hop series Vol 3. This mix I spent longer on and rather than give you interviews with legends of the scene I have delivered an extra 15 minutes of classics. It has been one of my favorite pieces of work compiling these mixes and no expense is spared into finding all those hidden gems. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did compiling my own personal favourites 🙏

Zodiac Tracks: Cancer (Season 2) - DJ Nu-Mark

You can watch the entire video HERE.  Highly Recommended.

Alchemist - Secret Sauce (Behind The Beat Video + Alchemist Drum Kit)

Beyond ill promotional video for ALC's Secret Sauce Drum Kit.  All sorts of glimpses into Alchemist's home studio, production equipment, etc... Always been a fan of Alchemist's production, but I've really been a fan of his more stripped-down style that his been more prevalent since the release of Russian Roulette.

'Mecca & The Soul Brother' 25th Anniversary Mix - Mixed by Chris Read

Another Highly Recommended mix by Chris Read.  For the record, I beat Chris Read to the The Chronic breaks mix (which can be heard HERE); which turns twenty-five this December.

Among the many greats of hip hop's golden era currently celebrating their 25th year, Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth's debut long player 'Mecca & the Soul Brother' is rightly considered a standout - frequently lauded as one of the greatest hip hop albums of all time. The album owes its distinctive sound in no small part to the eclectic and inspired choice of sample material. In addition to drawing on sampled staples popularised in the late 80s (James Brown, The J.B.'s), the album references jazz heavily and was pioneering in its use of layered samples, creating coherent tracks from small snippets of multiple disparate sources. In keeping with tradition, we've teamed up with Wax Poetics to present this exclusive mixtape of album tracks, remixes, and of course original sample material, mixed by Chris Read (MusicOfSubstance).
