America's First Hip Hop President

The Hip Hop Generation is officially in power!!! All political orientation aside, there is no denying that the election of Barack Obama (America's first black president) is largely influenced by the maturation of the Hip Hop Generation. For god sakes, we now have a president who has listened to a Jay-Z album. Many of you do not know this, but when I'm not creating and posting mixes, I work as a Political Science Professor at a nearby college. I've always thought it was cool that things have gotten to the point where you can now have a college professor who comes to class wearing Adidas shell-toes, and makes in-class references to the lyrics of Chuck D and De La Soul. And I am not alone, hip hop heads are now social workers, lawyers, accountants, school teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, etc... Believe it or not, we are now beginning to infiltrate the capillaries of power. Will we go as the generation prior, where hippie dreams of peace and love became yuppie realities of greed, excess, and moral relativism? Or will we rise to the challenge and stay true to the core principles of hip hop that have served to empower many of the disempowered? Will success be measured by the number of houses we own and the shine on our gas guzzling SUV? Or, will we do as our hip hop founders did, and make beautiful music and culture out of limited resources and a desire for creativity? Will we transcend the definition of success into improving our communities, becoming better husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers? Will we transform a nation infected with a false sense of entitlement into a nation of innovators who will take responsibility for their successes and failures? The challenges are ours to rise to. The bitching and moaning stops now. The questions of tomorrow are now ours to answer.
