Saturday Night Live Mix (KDAY 1580 AM) - Mixed by Joe Cooley

Great mix from back in day on the legendary airwaves of 1580AM KDAY. If you lived in the L.A. area during the 1980's and don't have memories of squeezing your ear to an old radio and listening to the static-filled KDAY mixes then you are either (a) younger than 25 years-old, or (b) were too busy listening to Cindy Lauper in the 80's to have experienced the golden age of hip hop. To learn more about KDAY, go here.

"static-filled KDAY mixes"

You aint lying Pipo! I live in the Inland Empire and in the 80's on good day you "might" be able to hear KDAY for few minutes before reverting to static.

Oh yeah, it wasn't until I bought my first tape that I realized hip hop music could actually be listened to static-free.

This brings many memories. What many people don't know is that KDAY was so powerful, that we could here it out here in the Central Valley (Cal), thats 3 hours north of LA. We would do anything to listen to a snippet of that "static." We rigged up special antennas with metal hangers to our moms radio. We'd get up on our roofs, especially for the friday night mixes. Ive heard of similar stories.. of people from San Francisco doing the same.

I still have some of those tapes but you know some of that static is like the pop and crackle of a record, and from some reason I love it!

By the way my cousin was one of the Mixmasters. Dj Ralph M, he put me up on KDAY when I was 13.

Joe Cooley was one of the best on the West Coast, BUT this site also need some DJ Bobcat, DJ Aladdin, MWalk, and Brian G mixes when they cut it up on KDAY, especially Bobcat (LL Cool J's DJ). Dr. Dre was also a KDAY mixmaster.
