Psycho Les (of the Beatnuts): Music for the Soul, Vol. 1

Re-post Friday is back again with another great mix that you may have missed, or just straight slept on. This mix has Psycho Les on the 1's and 2's mixing an array of funk and soul breaks. Below is the description originally posted.

Behind every great hip hop producer is a deejay. There's no denying Psycho Les' production abilities, but check out Les get down on the wheels of steel.

Everybody Loves Some Kind of Music - Mixed by J. Rocc

Just when I thought I had heard every J. Rocc mix there is to hear, my man the Dynamic One posts this gem of a mix. This is one of J. Rocc's earlier mixes so don't let the hiss scare you, that's the sound of an actual "mixtape." Happy Thursday!!

Miss Nasty - Mixed by Digumsmak

I know we are all "hip hop" here, but if you don't have a little room for some Janet in your life, then you have a little too much testosterone in your body. So let your guard down a little, press play, and let your inner R&B come out. Admit it, back in the day when Tribe, De la, and all the rest were dominating the scene, this is what you were really listening to. Props to my man Digumsmak for letting em hang on this one.

Video: Alchemist and Evidence Record Shopping at Amoeba Records

I am constantly searching for inspiration. A video like this is like spinach for the hip hop soul. This video consists of Evidence and Alchemist digging through the crates of Amoeba Records in Hollywood, CA. Ev and Al discuss the records (and cd's) in their bag, sources of inspiration, and current day albums/producers that they dig. Personally, I always enjoy seeing what inspires those that inspire me.

Def Jam Mix - Mixed by K-Delight

My peoples over at Dirtcastle put me onto this mix. According to the cover, this mix was recorded all in one take. I'm not trying to call anybody a liar here, but this mix is just too good to have been recorded live. Well, I guess that's the biggest compliment I can give to K-Delight.

Big Brother - Mixed by Pipomixes

I thought I'd re-post one of my own mixes for today's installment of re-up Friday. This mix was recorded sometime in 2005/06. If I remember correctly, I think this is the last mix I did before I bought Torq. Below is the description of the mix from the original post in April 2008.

"Since so many of you enjoyed DJ Platurn's De La Soul mix, I thought I'd post this Big Brother mix that was featured on okayplayer.com a few months back (just before Little Brother's latest album dropped). The mix was inspired by a Little Brother interview I read a few years ago. In the interview, I remember the interviewer asked the group why they went with the name "Little Brother." The group replied that they chose the name because they felt that musically, they were the "little brother" of groups like ATCQ, De La Soul, and Slum Village. In the spirit of that interview, I put together a 40 minute mix of Tribe, De La, and Slum V classics titled "Big Brother." Same BlendingNationSounds mixing style that all of you have come to know and love. Enjoy."

Video: Obrigado Dilla

I know, I know, the Dilla tribute thing is kinda played. With all that in mind, I first saw this video at the Suite For Ma Dukes concert a few months back and I remember thinking how cool it was. Well, I stumbled onto it again the other day while browsing through youtube. I thought that anybody who comes to this blog who hasn't seen it, would enjoy it. So, hope you enjoy it...

Video: Should I Go With the Trigger Finger?

Alright, all you production heads who have been telling me that I need to take the plunge already. After doing some extensive research, I think I'm going to go with the Trigger Finger as my starter piece of production equipment. I know that the MPD 24 is probably a better piece of equipment. However, I'm leaning toward the Trigger Finger because it comes bundled with Ableton Live Lite. Unless, any of you can explain to me whether Cool Edit would work with any of these controllers, I don't want to fork out the cash for some production software if it can be avoided. Keep in mind that I'm stuck in the 94 state of mind, I'm just trying to flip some loops. Nothing too crazy, I doubt I'd even get into original drum programing. Any advice and information would be greatly appreciated.

Still Shinin... - Mixed by DJ Revolution

I'm not the biggest Smif N Wessun fan, but I'm a huge Revolution fan. And that my friends is the value of a deejay. Dope deejays will make you listen to, and enjoy music you wouldn't otherwise peep.

Future Flavas Mix - Mixed by Pete Rock and MarleyMarl

I received this mix way back in 2000 as a promo gift with one of my orders from Hiphopsite.com. The mix is a recording from an airing of Future Flavas. I can't really tell you any more about the mix other than it's got Marley Marl and Pete Rock on the tables, it's obscure enough where I couldn't find the cover art online, and the song selection indicates that it was recorded sometime in 1999.

Heavy Weights Vol. 1 - Mixed by J. Rocc and Truly Odd

I'm not sure why, but many of you have slept on this mix. Well, here is a friendly reminder to download and listen. Below is a copy of the original post.

Excellent mix from half of the Fantastik 4our. I'm not quite sure how, but this mix got passed me and I just heard it for the first time a few months back. Based on the tracklist, I'm guessing that this mix was made sometime in 99/2000. Expect everything that you would expect from a mix that has J.Rocc's name on it. Enjoy...

Video: Beat Junkies Radio (Episode 14)

Not only am I sucker for dj sets caught on video, but I'm also a sucker for a themed mix. This most recent episode of Beat Junkies Radio has Rhettmatic mixing an all Taurus set. Hey man, if the mix has a theme I guarantee I'll give it listen because it ain't easy staying consistent with a theme (and not playing some random records).

Now That's What I Call Hip Hop Vol. 2 - Mixed by J. Rocc

I haven't seen too many of these mixes floating around the net. The first 10 minutes of this mix is straight fire! In these first ten minutes you'll hear J. Rocc pulling out all the stops, blends, 4-tracks, efxs etc... The rest of the mix consists of J tastefully mixing together an assortment of underground joints (circa 2002). I'll post volumes 1 & 3 as soon as I find them.

Class of '86 - Mixed by DJ Revolution

All of you have really slept on this mix. 300 downloads just doesn't do this mix justice. In my opinion, this mix is like seeing a copy of PE's It Takes a Nation... No matter how many copies you already own, you feel obligated to add one more copy to the collection out of principle. Now, I'm going to give everybody a pass because this mix was originally posted in May 08. However, if you haven't listened to his mix 50 times or more, you haven't listened to this mix enough.

Plastic Man - Mixed by DJ Revolution

Here's a pretty rare Revolution mix that was originally released only in Japan. Can somebody explain to me why Japan gets all the good ish? Are there any U.S. only releases? Anyway, if you squint your eyes real hard you can see the tracklist. To be honest, you shouldn't need a tracklist to listen to a Revolution mix. I think his skills are enough of a selling point.

Video: Beat Junkie Radio Feat. DJ Numark

All that bitching and moaning about hip hop being dead blah blah blah... has got to stop. Hip Hop is just not being played on the radio. But that doesn't mean it's dead. Was hip hop dead back in 1982 because it wasn't being heard on national airwaves? In all actuality, hip hop is alive and well. The most wonderful thing about it all is that the technology of today allows the true heads to broadcast their music directly to the world without the traditional forms of communication (corporate radio). Hip Hop ain't dead, radio is. Just watch the below videos and see. The motherf*cking Beat Junkies and Beatminerz are mixing hours worth of records multiple times a week!! When these dudes say that they love this culture, they f*cking mean it. Have we figured out how to make money of this? Not quite yet. But don't worry, we'll figure out how to eat off this in due time. Commerce will come soon enough. However, for right now, I'm having fun watching the new millennium underground movement develop.

P.S. If there's a smoother mix-set on video (than Numark's) I'd like to see it.

K-Day Vol. 1 - Mixed by DJ Melo-D

From 2004 to 2007, I was spending between 10-15 hours per week driving the freeways of Southern California. As you might imagine, I spent a considerable amount of time listening to the radio. During this time, I remember always making it a point to listen to Melo-D's traffic hour mixes. The below mix is essentially a compilation of those K-Day mixes that would help make bumper-to-bumper traffic bearable.

86 in the Mix - Mixed by Dr. Dre

Re-post Friday is back again with its third installment, 86 in the Mix. I think this was the first mix ever posted on the site. After you give it one listen, you'll see why. Even back in 86, Dre was mixing some straight fire. Just by listening to the quality of the mix, you'll swear this mix was made with the comforts of digital vinyl, editing software, and all the other technological effects the market has to offer.
