I just recently discovered this blog of Questlove telling all sorts of celebrity stories.  I challenge any of you to spend less than an hour reading all of these stories.  Below is a sample of a Questlove encounter with 2pac in early 96.

pac and suge came by the house of blues to the 4/1/96 show the roots/fugees/goodie mob did.
that night was surreal
the fugees record kept skipping much to my delight cause i wanted the entire audience to know that we didn't need to play on top of a record to sound banging.--
all their records skipped in front of a celeb packed audience. this was the night the soulquarians were born. i met both d and erykah the same day.
it wasn't beef......just rivalry on some band to band shit.
best believe that night i was sangin
"let's get craaaaaaazay.....lets gett nuuuuuuuuuuuuuts hahahahahahaaaa" (you must know the movie purple rain to get this reference)
anyways....          that night. warren betty came with flowers in tow to convince lauryn to take the role halle berry took in that political film of his (forget the title)
well....i went in the foundation room with kamal and some jawns was rapping to us when suddenly
*silence*
pac and suge walked in like this was an old western.---remember how that piano player shut his piano when rae dawn chong hit oprah's character in the face on color purple?--man it felt like that.
we saw suge whisper something to deon sanders and whatever it was, neon deon's whole demeanor was like *whimpers* he left INSTANTLY .
kamal was like "yo....you see how he bitched out deon?,,,,,,yo imma say whussup!"
i told him NO!!!! he was like "pssh fuck dat....pac is my nigga!"
i watched kamal go over to say hi through the reflection of a knife as a rear view (you know how they use mirrors in jail?) "he held his arm out and then........they gave him love back! whew!.....---
that whole weekend there was drama cause the bad boy/death row shit was about to be in full swing.
i followed mal and got love too. pac said he fucked with riq hard and said he wanted to work with us....i held him to that and in august i asked for a quote for illadelph halflife and he was more than happy to provide it.

This is the first volume of the D&D Experience brought to you by the two baddest Oklahomies to ever grace the tables, DJ Diverse & D.L. If memory serves me correctly this was recorded around 2007. This mix is strictly for the heads! Underground Hip Hop sounds at its finest!

Description of mix below.

I was recently asked to play a night called Classic Material in London. The idea for the club is to give each month over to a year from Hip Hop's past and only play tracks released during it. I was given 1989 and this set was all done from original vinyl, clicks, jumps and all.

Tracklist is in the Lyrics section in the mp3.
Release date: Jan 24, 2011

DJ Quik performed the "Quik is the Name" album in it's entirety the other night on his SP-1200 at the Key Club, L.A. It's really enjoyable to see legends like Quik find ways to make the "old," new. It's pretty hard to go wrong when you have a band, SP-1200, turntables, and a glass of champaign on stage. Personal Story: Every time I hear "Quik is the Name," I always think of my friend's sister giving me rides to school during my freshman year in high school.  This girl was the whitest of white girls and would bump "Quik is the Name" every morning like she was some sort of pimp from Compton.  More footage after the jump.

I guess I was sleepin' hard on this mix.  This mix is Highly Recommended.  In a related but unrelated note: Apparently when I save a mix to my favorites in soundcloud it automatically sends out a tweet stating that I "Highly Recommend" this mix.  Until I figure out how to change this setting, I want to announce that the coveted "Highly Recommended" acclaim is only official if it is stated here on the blog.  One can only imagine the horror of waking up on a Sunday morning to discover my "Highly Recommended" tag to be the victim of an internet conspiracy to water-down the integrity of pipomixes.com.

Masta Ace & ED OG Part 1 from The Cut on Vimeo.

Three legends discussing sources of inspiration and staying current. There's a quick clip that Revolution shows from back in the days of the Masta Ace vs. Boogieman beef. At the time I gave a slight edge to Boogieman on wax, but I haven't heard from Boogieman since (it did put Nottz on the map though).

You wouldn't believe me even if I tried to tell you how much you're going to enjoy this mix. P.S. Soundcloud needs to have a section where deejays say what applications were used on a mix like mixcrate does.

Cosmo isn't playin' on this one right here. This is a funk mix with some hip hop flava (if that makes any sense). Called what you will, but I'll call it Highly Recommended.

I suggest turning those games on mute and listening to this mix.  A lot going on here.  Listen and enjoy.

It's not the saddest thing in the world, but it's a shame that I have to wonder whether this mix was made with 2 turntables and a mixer being the primary platform. If it was, than I just paid Jake Ryan a big compliment. If it was not, it's just aigh't.  I think deejays (including myself) who are rockin' turntables need to do a few more "live" elements that clarify to the listener that the mix may be clean, but it's a human being doing the mixing..

As always, Ian Head delivers an excellent mix of jazz covers of James Brown, Michael Jackson, the Meters, and more. You can read the linear notes of the mix here.

Let me first say that it is 10:14 pm on a Tuesday night, I'm currently listening to Smif n Wesson's "Dah Shinin," reading Revolution's blog, and I'm writing this after taking a few rips from the vapor whip.  I wasn't going to originally post this commentary.  Instead, I was going to file it away with all of my other intoxicated rants that you all will never read.  However, Revolution’s blog, along with this Cratekings post, and subsequent commentary about the Ipad deejay app, provoked me to post this blog entry.  Now, before I get into my thoughts on the use of technology, let me provide a little context by explaining my background as a deejay.  My story of being a deejay may or may not like be like yours, but I think all of you will identify with it on some level......

A very high quality mix by my man DJ Synapse demonstrating the influence of Charlie Wilson on Hip Hop. Man, I'm on mixtape overload.  There are so many quality mixes that are currently circulating the web that I could post ten a day at this rate.  Now, before you get all excited, I'm going to have to post them one at a time, one day at time.  Otherwise, I won't have anything to post during the dry spells.  Rhett's explanation of the mix and download link after the jump.

Damn, this brings back memories of spending an entire weekend back in the day trying to dub "I Got 5 On It" by the Luniz from the radio.

My man Alphabethead delivers another gem of a mix filled with 60's and 70's era psychedelic rock. Below is Alphabethead's description of the mix.

Here is another of 1960’s and 70’s music mix – all assembled from vinyl. Once again it’s mostly pop and psych although this time a little more hard rocking due to the inclusion of Led Zeppelin, Lighthouse, Hendrix and May Blitz, an absolutely monstrous band on Vertigo records. I also made sure I included some Kiwi groups from the era; The Underdog Blues Band, Human Instinct and The Fourmyula’s quintessential Sixties tune ‘Nature’ all make an appearance. Other tracks of interest are The Beach Boys lesser known ‘Feel Flows’ which is in my opinion their most psychedelic tune and Spirit’s ‘The Other Song’ which Gonjasufi used as a rhythmic canvas last year. It’s mixed in a Hip Hop style with scratches, drum-breaks and cut-up sample segues! Please give it a spin – I hope you enjoy.

No download option on this bad boy (yet), but this is clearly the best 4 hour mix I've heard. If you are feeling salty about not being able to download this badboy, feel free to blowup Chief-One's soundcloud comment section and see if you can't get him to unlock the download tab. Hell, he wouldn't be the first deejay this month that this blog forced to ante-up some $ to soundcloud to appease the pipomixes masses. Have a great week.

You can't download the mix, but streaming this classic radio should be good enough for all of you. If it's not, please keep your complaints to yourself. In case you all haven't noticed, I've shown a preference for posting soundcloud mixes lately. It makes my life a lot easier, so for all you who are submitting mixes to be posted on the blog, if you set-up a soundcloud page and send me the mix that way it will improve your chances of making the blog.

Interesting read from Revolution's blog. Below is an excerpt.

I knew it wouldn't t be long before something presented itself to me as inspiration to write in this space. A random walk through BestBuy today proved to be a little more than a search for some extra gear we needed for a location shoot. Passing though the endless maze of aisles and endcaps Rod Gee spotted a particular display that blew my mind. Topped by a row of "Beats by Dre" headphones, were three shelves of computer based DJ hardware for the general consumer. Various types of digital turntables and gadgets that came with their own software were stacked upon each other like the board games in the display across the aisle. Prices of these things ranged from $79 to $299. Clever slogans and flashy boxes tried to disguise the fact that they were junk. Basically, this was the instant DJ section. Read More

Absolutely great interview with both Premier and Pete Rock. Just a taste of some of the gems you'll hear (a hip hop nerd nirvana).

- Guru discovered both Premier and Lord Finesse
- Premier and the Nutcracker physically assaulting a label exec.
- Spike Lee buying his first Gangstarr album because he thought Guru looked like Malcolm X
- Pete Rock considers his "Shut em Down" remix his production debut
- Pete Rock begging Nas to do another Illmatic before it's too late

I wish you all a happy and healthy 2011 filled with musical inspiration. Description of the mix below.

This is my first official mixtape. I made this in early 1997. Keep in mind I had to convert this to digital from a 13 year old cassette tape so the quality is dated. Lots of classic indie Hip Hop on this one. Black Star, Eminem vs. Royce Da 5'9", Black Moon, Mudkids, Don Skavone, Del The Funkee Homosapien, Erule, Xzibit, Mood Swingas, Channel Live, 7L & Esoteric, KRS-One and many others. This is Tru School at its purest. Recorded live on 2 turntables in one take. No Serato. No multi tracking. No edits. Just real vinyl and real djing. Definitely a piece of OKC Hip Hop history!
