101 Apparel Mixes

A bunch of sampler mixes to start the week off. 101 Apparel has been including "promo" mixes by some of the best deejays in the game with the purchase of a t-shirt. You can read Spinna's description of the above mix below, and sampler mixes by Rich Medina and Kon&Amir after the jump.

Throughout my years of digging for records I've always been particularly drawn to music that is heavily influenced by the electronic revolution. There was a long stretch where I would specifically hunt for Moog, New Age, Jazz Fusion, & experimental records... anything that involved synthesizers, but still had a groove. Upon the inquiry from 101 Apparel to come up with a concept for a mix my initial thought was it has to be unique. It was the opportune time for compiling tracks from past to present that capture the electronic experience. Future Shock is born and is without a doubt one of the most brain crushing mixes I've ever done! I hope you dig it" - DJ Spinna

Lo Mejor y Sabor de Quantic - Mixed by Jeremy Sole

Louder than a Bomb - Bomb Squad Interview (1998)

Here is a very insightful interview of the legendary Bomb Squad that was initially published in Ego Trip's Issue #13 (1998).  Interview by Chairman Mao.  Read here.

DRG Presents...DJ Melo-D (short film)

Always great to hear Melo-D mixing one of this vintage sets without some Vegas promoter breathing down his throat. The mini-documentary also gives some insight into how Melo-D first got started deejaying and the early days of the Beat Junkies. All of you L.A. heads may be particularly interested in hearing Melo-D explain the story behind him leaving 92.3 The Beat and Julio G's show. Can't believe it's been 10 years since I last heard Melo-D on the radio.

The Essence of Madlib Shades of Blue - Mixed by J. Rizzle

Not a high intensity mix, but a mix where the music takes center stage. The track selection is so good here that the mix is simply undeniable. Check tracklist here.

Public Service Announcement: Twitter with Caution

This is not an anti-Twitter rant.  Instead, I'd consider it some strongly suggested recommendations for all deejays who use this social networking tool.  Most deejays use Twitter in a perfectly tolerable manner by using it as a way to promote mixes, gigs, and witty humor.  Other deejays have clear cases of diarrhea of the thumb.  Various deejays have gone Tom Cruise on us.  We love them as deejays, but once they start showing their true selves they become more annoying than a poor wifi connection. Unlike Tom Cruise, almost all of our favorite deejays don't have a premier public relations staff to clean-up their messes.  That's what I'm here for.  Below, is a set of observations and rules that could help many of our favorite deejays save themselves from themselves.

1. There are limits to self promotion.  We all understand that Twitter is a tool primarily used for self promotion, but a little modesty PLEASE!  Want to tweet where you'll be spinning next?  Cool.  Want to re-tweet where you'll be spinning next every hour on the hour?  Still Cool (I guess)  Want to tweet your latest mix?  Please do.  Want to re-tweet your latest mix everyday for 6 months?  That's cool too.  Want to tell the twitter world how you "rocked _________(insert your favorite city here)" after every single gig?  Get the f*ck outta here!  We get it, your the greatest deejay since sliced bread.  Is it really necessary to tell us over and over again?  Want to know who's especially guilty of this?  I won't name names, but I will give you a little rhyme: Twitter dumb, twitter dee, this deejay's tendency to suck himself off is gayer than a dude wearing a pair of capris.

2. Please no philosophical quotes (especially if they're by you).  I need a deejay telling me philosophy like I need a hole in my head.  I want to hear your latest mix or attend your next gig. I don't want to read your poor attempt at street corner philosophy.  I'll read Plato if I'm looking for something philosophical.  Just because somebody read a book to you doesn't mean you have to share the one sentence that you remember with us over and over again.  In the words of the late, great 2pac, "your whole style is bit!"  Again, I won't name any names here, but a certain 26th letter deejay should be doing a 25 to life bid for plagiarism.

3. Tweeting, "people who are on Twitter all day are gay" is.....GAY!!  If you're on Twitter all day, OWN IT!  You're more stupid than stupid if you go dissing people who tweet all day when your own profile shows that you have 40,000 tweets.  There is a certain deejay who I could put on blast for this, but I'll save him for later.

4. Reality Check 1,2. Probably not the best idea to start spouting off as a deejay about how you're going to take over the world when you have as many followers as I have wives.  Even if I was a polygamist, you still wouldn't have enough followers to talk about taking over the world.  There are a few deejays that come to mind here, but you probably haven't heard of them.

5. Who needs a Mad Rapper when we have Mad DJ's.  Man, your favorite deejay is one bitter mofo.  To be honest, a little bit of bitterness is entertaining to a degree.  In fact, Twitter is the perfect venue for some witty, mean spirited humor.  With that said, there are some deejays who come off as flat-out ugly people.  One particular deejay that comes to mind spends most of his day essentially telling himself how wonderful he is, and telling everybody else how stupid they are.  This particular deejay also enjoys tweeting over and over again how much he loves his kid.  If you love your kid, tell your kid.  Why do you feel the need to convince me how much you love your kid?  I know, I know.  Why do you follow this guy?  Probably for the same reason I have the tendency to glance at car wrecks.  Who is this deejay?  Sh*t, I'm afraid to tell you all (dude seems like he's got anger issues).  However, I will tell you that you probably wouldn't know his name if not for the legacy of a certain fallen hip hop great.

Sasquatch - Mixed by DJ Ian Head

Some music on the spookier side for all you Halloween freaks.

Pre-internets, my dad used to have a folder of news clips he called the "Bigfoot File." Being from Oregon, the tales of these big creatures being sighted, or huge footprints being found, were common. I remember as a kid being curious about this phenomenon, much like UFOs, and reading various TIME-Life articles on Bigfoot sightings - especially the famous videotape, which has recently been formally debunked as a hoax.
Yetis, Bigfoot, Chewbacca - do they walk among us? These days, I'm not really trying to find out. But it's October, and while I'm not a big Halloween person, I figured I'd try something conceptual and somewhat thematic this month. Some creepy beats and breaks, and various "Sasquatch Hunters" and academics giving us the breadth of their knowledge on the creature.
This tape also marks four years of monthly mixtapes. Thanks again to everyone for their ongoing support.
-- DJ Ian Head
Special shout to Dan Littlewood for the Sasquatch record.

I think I agree with 100% of what Guru says in this clip.

AUTUMN BREEZE (2011) - Mixed by Fred Fades

Just trust me.

Threw together a little autumn mix for myself and whoever who digs it.
Mainly psych, progjazz, jazzfunk, jazzrock-ish stuff that sounds like autumn to me.
No editing, drops or effects this time. Just playing records after eachother.
This mix was made WITHOUT a compressor I usally use for my mixes, so I am not as pleased with the compression this time as I used a digital compressor and squeezed a little to hard.

Anyhow, good tunes and I think most of you will enjoy it.
If you got any track-ID questions - holler at Fredfades Jazzblaster on Facebook.

This mix + cover is dedicated to a important friend of my family that just passed away from us — she was deeply obsessed by the look of the nature during autumn..

Hope y'all enjoy it.

Peace,

F.

Mad Chillin - Mixed by DJ MadKid

I'm going to do a little ball washing here; but f*ck all them big name blogs that don't give lesser known names love when quality is created. This blog is the ish because I'll post anybody's mix if it's dope. Them other blogs are too busy sucking themselves off to give anybody else some love.  That's why you all come here. I don't care if your DJ Jazzy Jeff or DJ Who Gives a F*ck, I'll post it if it's dope. Hell, I'll hype it like it's the next Chronic if I'm feelin' it. Mad Chillin is an outstanding smoothed out mix. A diverse mix of songs with one thing in common, they're all mad chill. Tracklist after the jump.

Tarantino Breaks - Mixed by Pipomixes

The concept behind this mix goes back a few years. I originally encouraged fellow BlendingNations crew member, Omega:NYC to do this mix. For reasons he could only explain, he never really seemed all that interested in doing the mix. I ended up taking on the mix when I was struggling to find a new concept for a mix this past summer. Tarantino is one of my top 3 directors and the music in his films is always impeccable. The mix is kind of a no brainer. I hope I did the music justice. Enjoy the mix.

Low End Theory - 20 Year Album-Versary

I finally got around to reading this lengthy 2 part piece on the album Low End Theory.  A recommended read for all who are not allergic to reading.  Part I  Part II

Skratch Bastid & Sneaker Freaker present The Starter Era - Dope Raps 1989-1993

Issue #22 of international kick-head bible Sneaker Freaker magazine features a 17-page spotlight on Starter athletic wear and how it changed the sports fashion game. To accompany the story, they asked me to make a mix featuring rap jams from Starter’s prime, 1989-1993, to be included with the magazine in physical form. It features classic & overlooked bangers from one of hip-hop’s golden eras, alongside some of the original tunes they sampled and exclusive remixes. You’ll know what’s going down from the intro.

Big thanks to Sneaker Freaker (http://www.sneakerfreaker.com) and Pigeons & Planes (http://www.pigeonsandplanes.com) for their help in this project.

For more Skratch Bastid goods, check all of my internet sites in my Soundcloud profile.

This mix is best listened to first without looking at the track list. Once you've made it all the way through, go here: http://www.skratchbastid.com/skratch-bastid-sneaker-freaker-present-the-starter-era-%E2%80%93-dope-raps-1989-1993-track-list/

Da Beatminerz Favorite Sample Flips

Egotrip bring us some more record porn.  I wouldn't exactly call it hardcore porn, but more like the softcore stuff.  But as you all know, it's the softcore stuff that has the better looking "actresses." I think I'll stop now with the analogy before I end my marriage.  Read the article HERE.

So Much Soul (unreleased) - DJ Shortkut

In celebration of his birthday, Shortkut released this previously unreleased mix exclusively to what will likely become the new favorite site of pipomixes.com

This was made in 2007, originally to be named So Much Soul Vol.6 - but never was happy of the final mix which never really pushed me to press it up.
Eventually Vinroc came out with SMS vol.6 - so it just sat in my hard drive for years.
If you're familiar with the SMS series, it's a mix of soul related R&B, Hip Hop & Jazz. Definitely popular for the ride home from the club.
enjoy! and if you like it, lemme know.

blessings.

A Very Sad Day: Soundcloud Writes its Own Obituary

It is with great regret that I inform you all that the greatest thing to happen to the mixtape deejay since the cassette, may soon be no more.  Apparently, Soundcloud now has a music recognition system that does not allow deejays to upload mixes that contains music that has been flagged by the copyright holder.  You can go HERE to read all about it and read the angry comments by soundcloud users.  Though this new policy has been in effect since January 2011, this is all new news to me.  I discovered this the hard way because I was trying to upload my new Tarantino Breaks mix when I was informed that my mix would not be allowed to upload due to copyright infringement.  This not only saddens me for the obvious reasons, but it bums me out because I freaking love soundcloud.  Soundcloud is the Facebook for deejays.  Now, it appears that I will be forced to find another site.

Tru Thoughts Funk - Mixed by Rich Medina

Quite a bit of funky, soulful music smoothly mixed together by one of the better mixers in the game. I know some of you call him a "hipster" deejay. I'm not really sure what that means, but keep in mind that Medina has been doin' it since way before it became hip to be or hate on a hipster.

Best of Quantic - Mixed by J. Rocc

God damn!! Two new J. Rocc mixes in one week! This is just way too much goodness for one blog to handle. Tracklist after the jump. Highly Recommended (do I really need to say this with a J.Rocc mix?)

The Big Playback V.1 - Mixed by DJ Platurn &Edaboss

I don't think I've posted a James Brown mix in over a minute now.  I've got a Jay-B'z mix collecting dust that will post one of these days.  In the meantime, enjoy one of the best mixed by one of the best.

This mix was executed by myself and DJ Edaboss in the year 2007. James passed away on Christmas Day in 2006. His contribution to funk & soul music will never be forgotten.

Free the Robots Live at Do-Over

If only 2pac and Nate Dogg were still alive they could remix "All About U" to "Everywhere I go I see the same Do-Over ho." For all you deejays trying to get a post: Pipomixes will post just about any mix that finds a way to incorporate a Jodeci track.

Cosmo Baker Live at Do-Over

Props to pipomixes' supporter Cosmo Baker for a dope set amidst severe distractions directly in-front of his tables. Tough question for all of you to answer: Which is better, Cosmo's set or the distractions?

DJ Quik Live at the Do-Over

I guess I know now why they call him DJ Quik. Always been a Quik fan, but I never knew dude rightfully deserved the "DJ" prefix. Now I do.

R&B Classics 97 - Mixed by DJ Soul

Ahh, the sweet sounds of breaks mixed live, cassette tape air, and the skills of DJ Soul. I think this is the famous mix that Puffy heard before he commissioned Soul to do another similar type mix for him.
