DJ Mell Starr v. DJ Incrediboi (2013 Rock n Soul Spring Jump Off)
Props to both deejays for just getting down and having a good time, but I've got to give the edge to Mell Starr.
HEAVYWEIGHT CARRY-ON (All 45 mix) - Mixed by Skratch Bastid, Marc Hype & DJ Expo
Picture this: 3 DJs (Skratch Bastid, Marc Hype & DJ Expo) from 3 different countries (Canada, Germany & USA, respectively) are all in Berlin at the same time. Bastid & Expo are on the road touring in Europe on separate tours, and Marc is at home in between German & Russian tours. By the grace of a few mutual friends, they all meet at Marc's house to hang out and trade music. Each DJ cracks open their stuffed 45 road cases (they never fit enough...) and they proceed to show off the records that they packed, over sips of delicious Tegernseer. Marc has the bright idea that they should record some of this. They meet again the following day and start recording a mix. Simple enough.
Made solely from the 45s that they took on tour, HEAVYWEIGHT CARRY-ON is 70 minutes of Funk, R&B, Latin, Hip-Hop, Dancehall & Reggae 7" records - an all vinyl mix. The added restriction with wax-only gigs is that you can play only what you can carry into the gig, and traveling tightens those limitations even more. It's whatever you can fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat in front of you, because no one puts their copy of Bobby Franklin's Insanity in checked luggage, right?. But that's part of the fun of it all. This is a set of tunes that these selectors trust to turn any party out while on the road. Press play and start travellin'...

Solid Steel Radio Show 24/5/2013 Part 1 + 2 - United States of Audio
Solid Steel (24th May) Following on from last year's treatment of 'Paul's Boutique' (by DJ Food, Cheeba and Moneyshot), United States of Audio does the same with De la Soul's groundbreaking album 3 Feet High and Rising. It's not just a mix, but more like an audio documentary about an album that is also about to celebrate it's 25th anniversary. In his own words;
'Several years in the making and including around 100 tracks, this is my personal tribute to De La Soul's '3 Feet High and Rising'. Using original sample sources, album tracks, interviews and rarities, 'How High's The Water Mama' tells the story of one of hip hop's most influential albums.
When De La Soul's debut album dropped in 1989 I was ten years old. Yet, by some stroke of amazing good fortune a cassette copy of '3 Feet High and Rising' found its way into my hands thanks to my best mate's older brother (though I'm pretty sure said brother had no idea of this fact!). The music was a revelation and had a significant influence in shaping my musical tastes - in fact I can't think of any other album that has had such a profound effect on me as this one. Thus '3 Feet High and Rising' holds a special place in my musical affections. Now, some twenty-five years after its original release, it's time to pay my respect to Pos, Dove, Mase, and Prince Paul...'

Respect and thanks to DJ Moneyshot for providing the original inspiration for the mix, Strictly Kev for sample sourcing, design work and general encouragement, DJ Cheeba for keeping me on my toes, Chris Binstead (wherever you may be) for his great taste in music and for unwittingly exposing my young ears to '3 Feet High and Rising' in the first place, and of course, to Dave Jolicoeur, Kelvin Mercer, Vincent Mason and Paul Huston without whom none of this would be possible.
The Gospel According to Budgie II - Mixed by Budgie Beats
J. Rocc recently tweeted that this is one of his favorite mixes. I think that's all the description that most of you will need.
DJ Revolution Live at Chocolate (10/11)
I can see why Revolution is so damn angry all the time. If I was as good at something as Rev is on the wheels and wasn't a millionaire 50 times over I'd be pretty salty too. Skip to the 6:55 mark to see one of the most impressive song to sample transitions I've seen (all deejays who have ever attempted to mix that XXplosive sample will feel me here). I've seen a lot of very impressive Revolution sets in my day, but this might be my favorite. Parts 2&3 after the jump.
Flight School Volume 3 - Mixed by Sparkle Motion
This Flight School series is absolutely incredible. Volume 3 certainly doesn't disappoint. Highly Recommended.
Buckle up and brace yourselves for Sparkle Motion's third and final installment of their hugely popular "Flight School" mixtape series. If you've flown with them before, you already know what to expect: first class 80s funk, soul and R&B breaks, obscure and familiar, all mixed together with superior turntable skills. Download and prepare for take off...
Chilled Beats & Rhymes Volume 2 - Mixed by JayDeckStar
I meant to post this mix last Friday but never got around to it. The perfect mix for a Friday or Saturday night with your adult beverage of choice. Just a bunched chilled-out instrumentals mixed together quite nicely. Enjoy
2nd Part of beat ' n' rhymes. Includes tracks by: Melodiesinfonie, Hubert Daviz, K- Def, Quantic, DJ Mitsu the Beats, Onra, Testiculo y Uno, Teebs, Leksa, Apollo Brown, Glen Porter, Green Butter, Samon Kawamura, MF Doom, Ta- Ku, Kankick, Suff Daddy and many more... chill!
J. Rocc Live Set & Interview on MikiDz Show (5/13/13)
I've got class in like 30 seconds but I wanted to post this for all of you so you could enjoy. Audio after the jump. Highly Recommended.
Boiler Room NYC (4/25/13) - Pete Rock
Nothing earth shattering here, but it's always cool to hear a live party set from the legendary Pete Rock.
Cosmo Baker Presents Genius: The Sound Of Raphael Saadiq
I've tried to think of an artist of my generation more under appreciated than Raphael Saadiq. He certainly gets love, but nowhere near the love an artist responsible for such timeless music deserves.
I'm originally from Philly, and so you should probably understand my inherent connection to soul music because of my rearing in this great city. Soul music, in its many forms, is what it always comes back to. And when you think of people of our generation that embody "soul music" one shouldn't look any further than the one and only Raphael Saadiq. A product of another great soul city of this nation, Oakland CA, Ray Ray is the quintessential R&B artist of the 90s and beyond in my opinion. In 2008 when "The Way I See It" was released I was enlisted by the label to do this official mixtape of Raphael's work, including rarities, remixes, productions and appearances... Erykah Badu, Common, Earth Wind & Fire, Joss Stone, Lauryn Hill, Devin The Dude, Kelis, J Dilla, Deedra Moses, The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, DJ Quik, Nappy Roots, 2Pac, Amp Fiddler, Mashonda, Total, Snoop Dogg ,Q-Tip, Total, D'Angelo, Freeway, and lest we forget... Tony! Toni! Toné! & Lucy Pearl. What do they all have in common? They've all worked with the great Raphael Saadiq. So in honor of his birthday I'm proud to share with you Cosmo Baker Presents Genius: The Sound Of Raphael Saadiq. I hope you enjoy it!

Ghostface Honestly Reviews His Discography
You won't find many rappers who will honestly assess their discography as Ghost does here. I agree with just about everything Ghost says in regards to his albums with the exception of Pretty Tony. I think he was a little too critical of that album. For me, Pretty Tony was just a notch below Ironman, Supreme Clientele, and Bulletproof Wallets (if you include the unreleased joints). Read interview HERE.
DJ Revolution Interviews Illmind
iLLMIND Full Interview from The Cut on Vimeo.
Illmind is a dope producer who makes fire beats, but his social networking game is second to none. Listening to how he went from no name bedroom producer to household name via myspace and some hip hop forums is pretty incredible. Watch and learn.

DJ Nu-Mark Live in L.A. (2/4/11)
Nu-Mark is just sick wid it. The only problem with Nu-Mark is his damn name. Every time I search his name on youtube I end up with a page full demo videos for Numark products.
J. Dilla with Slum Village Soundcheck (2000)
Here's some "rare" (soon to be not so rare) footage of Slum Village doing a sound check prior to a 2000 L.A. concert. Pretty cool watching Dilla messing around on multiple MPCs trying to figure out the different cables and adapters he'll need to hook-up all of the MPCs. All deejays and producers will take some solace in seeing that even the great Dilla had to make the last minute run to Radio Shack for a certain adapter that needed to get everything up and running.
Solid Steel Radio Show (4/19/13) Featuring DJ Food
Trust me when I say that all of you will really enjoy this.
DJ Food turns back the clock in our 25th Anniversary slot and following a request for an old school Hip Hop set for the De:Tuned party in Antwerp earlier this week, Strictly Kev put this special party mix together to rock the dancefloor. Solid Steel however gets an exclusive to kick things off in the form of excerpts from his first ever recorded mix, unheard by anyone except close friends and hidden on tape for 25 years.
Back in '87 his DJ (and graffiti) name was D-Vice and the 'Soundlab mix' (named after his 2nd mixer, made by Soundlab) was made between 1987-88 on his first two belt-driven decks (only one with a pitch control) and a pause button tape deck. A Strictly Old School Special.

Gangstas Don't Rap They Boogie Vol. 3 - Mixed by Fredfades
For some reason I thought I had posted this mix weeks ago when it originally hit the web. The more I think about mix series with multiple volumes the more I think that later volumes tend to be better than earlier ones (unlike most movies with multiple volumes). This third volume of Fredfades' Gangstas Don't Rap series is no exception to the rule. All sorts of funky jams here.
Here we go again. The third installment in my boogie mix series.
This is the mix I'm most satisfied with out of all my mixes.
All records are original first press copies, except from the Pyramid Plus (obviously).. Some of them dollarbin-jams, some of them very rare. Most of the tracks are from 45's, but there's a few 12"s & LP cuts in there aswell. Most of the stuff is indie or private 1980-1986 boogie/electric modern soul/boogiefunk records. Two of them are edits I did, the rest is untouched.
If you're in Oslo, be sure to visit our killer discoboogieparty at the top of the Rockefeller buildin, saturday the 4th of May. The party will be off the hook. If you're not in Oslo, make sure you fly out for that shit.
