New York Reality Check 101 - Mixed by DJ Premier

I just finished listening to this mix for the first time in at least 5 years. Man, I feel so hip hop right now. You all should see me. I've got my hoodie and backpack on and I just came back from the Footlocker with some new Timbos. Only thing I'm missing is the razor blade in my mouth and it's 1996 all over again. Give it another listen if you haven't recently. Damn, just remembered how hyped this mix made me for J-Live's LP back in the day.

The first time I heard this, I remember cringing at some of the mixing. Like Pete Rock, Premier can be a bit heavy-handed with his mixing. P-p-p-p-p-p-p-remier. But the mixing is actually quite decent and the selection is just stellar.

On a side note, this was one of the first and few "underground" hip hop mixes ever to get wide physical distribution. I remember seeing it at Borders. It was also pressed on wax as a 3xLP triple gatefold.

My favorite producer, and my least favorite dj.. Weird how that works.. Always brought tracks back way too much and used the p-p-p-p-p-p-premier like it was going out of style. This is actually one of his better mixes,, I have a bunch of old tapes of his from Tape Kingz that were unbearable to listen to.
