FACT Magazine's Against the Clock - MNDSGN

As is the beatmaking process, the video is a little slow. With that said, most of you will likely enjoy the thorough views of MNDSGN's home studio along with his beatmaking process.

Against the Clock is a series where we give an artist 10 minutes in the studio and see what they come up with. You can watch all the past episodes here.
In this episode, we linked up with Mndsgn (pronounced “mind design” – it’s a reference to a Nas lyric, in case you were wondering) in his Los Angeles home studio.
Although he’s settled on the West Coast, and its sleepy sound fits his sleepy keys like a glove, Mndsgn was born in the Philippines, where his parents formed part of the Aum Supreme Truth Cult. The Cult’s ventures into terrorist activity caused them to flee the group in the late 1980s, and after being granted political asylum in the US they settled in rural New Jersey.
Since moving West, Mdsgn has signed to Stones Throw Records, who released his debut album Yawn Zen last year. He’ll be taking his twinkling fingers (check that bird’s eye view!) to London later this month, performing for Soundcrash on May 30.

DJ Screw: A Fast Life in Slow Motion (RBMA article)

DJ Screw never touched a computer (at least, not for the purposes of his famous mixtapes) but was years ahead of his peers in terms putting production value into a mixtape.  Absolute must read for fans and laymen alike.  Read article HERE.

What is a DJ?

I stumbled upon this article over at DJWorx.com.  I don't think I actually agree with the author's definition of a deejay, but it certainly did make me think about how you actually define a "DJ."  Defining what a deejay is (at least, the hip hop version of a deejay) is not as easy as you might think.  Here is my definition of a deejay.

A DJ selects music AND does at least ONE of the below things:
- Manually blend/mix/beat match songs
- Scratch or manipulate music live while recording or performing in front of an audience
- Provides live augmentation by adding effects/drops/remixes/instrumentation to a song's original composition.
How'd I do?  You can read the original article HERE.  The comments are also worth reading FYI.

Pearls: Sade Remixes, Covers, & Flips - Mixed by DJ Rahdu

I don't think the Mixes household got BET until 95 or 96.  Yet, I was a big Sade fan well before then.  Go figure?

As a child I spent countless hours glued in front of the television watching videos on MTV, but when we finally got BET in '84 I was introduced to a crew of Smooth Operators that would have a long-lasting effect on me and legions of others. Appearing in constant rotation was one of the most aesthetically pleasing acts, unbound by genre, that continue to confound music lovers to this day. Was Sade Folk, Soul, Jazz, RnB, a combination of all of the above or none of them at all? It never mattered as long as they continued to provide their mysterious trademark sound. 6 albums and 4 Grammy's later, they're still one of my favorite bands and a constant source of inspiration for up and comers.
Pearls is a testament to the countless number of acts, regardless of genre, that have been touched by Sade. Their remakes or remixes is their homage to a sound that can not be encapsulated but forever enjoyed. Dance, love or chill out to this

Boogie & The Barber (Stretch & Bobbito) Hot 97 Show (2/11/96)

At this point my friends, nostalgia might be all we got.

Based on the success of their "Stretch & Bobbito" show on 89.9 WKCR, Hot 97 offered them a weekly slot in early '96. Naming the show "Boogie & The Barber", the first episode aired on February 11, 1996 and featured guest Lord Finesse (101:53). When you heard Capone's voice running down the boroughs at the start of the show you knew it was time to press record. The show was on Sunday's from 12am-2am then later changed to 11pm-1am and ran until the duo parted ways in December 1998. At that point Stretch stayed on Hot 97 and renamed it "The XL Show" and Bobbito and Stretch started alternating Thursdays on the KCR show with Bob renaming his night "The CM FAMALAM Radio Program". Now 20 years later the two are set to re-release some of their classic shows on cassette through Fat Beats along with a feature film documentary entitled "Stretch & Bobbito: Radio That Changed Lives" which will be screened in NYC on August 16, 2015 at Central Park. www.stretchandbobbito.com for more info.

Elements Documentary Kickstarter Campaign

L.A. and "underground" heads from the 90s should be familiar with Elements. The Elements crew has started a Kickstarter campaign to finance a documentary about the famous club that was responsible for starting many illustrious careers.

Soundcloud vs. The Competition

An ongoing point of conversation throughout the deejay world (and this blog) is Soundcloud's jumping of the shark.  I stumbled onto this article over at DJ Worx comparing Soundcloud to alternative cloud/streaming platforms.  You can read the article HERE.  As mentioned in the article and on this blog, Soundcloud continues to be where the action is.  My personal opinion is that Soundcloud continues to be the best of a bunch of (bad) limited options because that's where most of the audience still is.  Assuming you want your mixes to actually be heard, Soundcloud continues to be the gold standard.  Sure, there are various alternatives.  However, all the alternatives have shortcomings as well (as the article does a good job of  pointing out).  The reality is that short of big record labels changing their position on this issue, this will likely continue to be an eternal cat and mouse game.  Some other platform will likely emerge and become the new gold standard; deejays/producers will flock to the new platform; the record companies will then put the pinch on the new platform; take-downs will then ensue; deejays will then bitch and moan; another platform will then emerge; deejays will then flock to the new platform and the cycle will continue.

Surock Makes a Beat on the SP-1200

Been a minute since I last posted a beat making video. You SP-1200 heads will enjoy this because most of the beat making is unedited, so you can see quite a bit here. Parts 2&3 after the jump.

J. Rocc's Adventure's in Stereo Featuring DJ Rhettmatic (5/10/15)

Rhettmatic puts in a more than solid birthday set (which starts just after the hour mark) for J. Rocc's Adventures in Stereo. For those who have complained in the past about KPFK's stream bitrate, I attempted to forward your complaints to the Funky President himself. As you can see here, I wouldn't expect improvements anytime soon. Enjoy.

Soul Trippin' - Mixed by Kenny Dope

I'm not sure if I've posted this before or not. Either way, there are no rules against posting a Dope mix more than once. If you're not doing it already, I highly recommend you all follow Soul Cool Records' mixcloud page.

Knxweldge Live in the Dungeon

I post this for two reasons:

1. Knx is that dude and Hud Dreams drops today.

2. I desperately need to know where that Mobb Deep vocal sample is from.  I've been trying to track that down since the Fantastik 4our show used it on one of their intros, but have no idea where it's from.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Solid Steel Radio Show 1/5/2015 Hour 1 - Four Tet

Solid Steel in association with Serato (1st May) We continue celebrating the relaunch of the Solid Steel website www.solidsteel.net with the return of Four Tet and an exclusive mix alongside Anthony Naples for a TEXT Records special. Four Tet first appeared on Solid Steel back in 2001 and you can now hear this mix in the Featured section on the website, along with another mix from 2002 (which also featured Bonobo, DJ Food and DK as part of the Solid Steel Tour retrospective.) We also feature a 2001 mix from Koushik, who was the first artist to release an EP on Text Records.
Four Tet is up first digging deep with a vinyl only selection and as with one of his previous shows, there's no track list, but you can see a photo of the the album covers for every record in the background image to his mix at www.solidsteel.net
He had this to say about his mix;
"My latest Solid Steel mix uses music from all over the world but most of it chosen because it sounds like it comes from another world. These are all older records and things I have been listening to recently and have discovered on my endless search for music."
Four Tet has produced the latest single by Roots Manuva and you can get Facety 2:11 on Monday 4th May ninjatune.net/release/roots-manuva/facety-2-11
