Smootherness (All Vinyl Mix) - Mixed by DJ Hudson

Been a minute since I last heard a mix from blog favorite, DJ Hudson.  As with all Hudson mixes, expect top notch selections and seamless mixing.
I recently DJ'ed at South Nottingham Soul Society's family all dayer, which was really good (thanks for having us over Mouse!), and I decided to do a mix with what was in my record bag that day. All types of mellow soul to kick back to.

Three the Hard Way - Mixed by QSTN, Manwell, and KidDragon

Highly Recommended mix brought to my attention by the good people over at Egotrip.  You can access the free download of this mix or purchase the cassette HERE.

In a related, unrelated note: I'm seeing more and more mixes appearing on Mixcloud instead of Soundcloud.  However, though it appears that there is a not so subtle exodus of deejays fleeing Soundcloud in favor of Mixcloud; the Mixcloud hosted mixes don't nearly have the same level of traffic compared to Soundcloud hosted mixes (even with the exodus).  Even mixes by well known deejays show relatively modest numbers when hosted on Mixcloud.  Which raises the dilema we all find ourselves in as deejays.  Which is better: A mix hosted by Soundcloud that reaches a wider audience that runs the risk of being taken down (and your account potentially closed); or a safely uploaded mix to Mixcloud that really isn't going to be heard by anybody?  A question for the ages.

We've been talking about this project since last December and it's finally here!! The trio (consisting of KidDragon, Manwell and QSTN) have put in some major work on this and the end result is straight fire!! The idea for the project came from 3 of them playing heavy funk sets one day and thought it would be dope to put together a mix to celebrate the 2 turntablists (KD & Manwell) joining the cr3w.

Lord Finess Mixing Ultimate Breaks and Beats (2010)

They don't call him "Lord" for nothing.

D.I.T.C.'s own Lord Finesse on the turntables at the Ultimate Breaks and Beats DJ Tour Launch in NYC.
www.blacktree.tv

On February 24, 2010 New York celebrated a major cornerstone in hip-hop history with the Ultimate Breaks and Beats Live to commemorate the original release of the Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilation (1981-1991) and its creators, the late Breakbeat Lenny Roberts and Louis Break Beat Lou Flores. The event will showcase some of the most talented DJs in New York City that will display their extraordinary turntablist skills as they pay tribute the music collection that transformed the face of hip-hop for over three decades. The historic night will take place at B.B. Kings with doors opening at 6:00 PM and the show beginning at 8:00 PM and will also serve as a launch party for the upcoming Ultimate Breaks and Beats national tour.
The Ultimate Breaks and Beats compilation played a pivotal role in shaping hip-hop by providing DJs with the essential tools they needed to create many of the popular party anthems of the era, legendary mixes, and ultimately the foundation of early hip-hops infamous eclectic sound. The 25 volume compilation was co-created by the late Breakbeat Lenny and Break Beat Lou who released the collection over a span of 10 years (1981-1991) as hip-hop was just beginning to take shape.
The compilation conveniently extracted drum breaks from hit rock, disco, and funk songs and created entire songs worth of what would become the most sought after beats providing a critical library for DJs and producers. This style become integral to every aspect of hip-hop from the DJ to the B-boys and B-girls to the MCs who rapped over the signature sounds, and now the hip-hop community will gather to pay respect in true hip-hop fashion.
This night is a special moment for a lot of people not just me, says Luis Flores This is just another dope party; its the night when the DJ Worlds elite honor the foundation of present day hip-hop. A list of hip-hops whose who will be on hand to give riveting first hand examples of classic break beat turntabilism as they recognize Break Beat Lou and Breakbeat Lenny for their monumental contributions to what has become one of the largest global music genres ever, hip-hop.

Donuts Dissected: 10 Years On

Learned a thing or two about the Donuts while listening.
Today marks ten years since James Yancey, better known as J Dilla, passed away. Regularly considered as one of the greatest producers and musicians to ever grace hip-hop, his innovative techniques, meticulous accuracy and outright groove have been mimicked and revered since he passed in February 2006. His magnum opus, Donuts, was released just three days before his death; much of it produced from his hospital bed using just an MPC, sampler and portable turntable — a remarkable feat under any circumstance.
Raj Chaudhuri (aka Raji Rags) — head of music at Boiler Room and Livin' Proof co-founder — has been an avid Dilla disciple for a long time. Classic Album Sundays recently invited him to chair a talk on Dilla's finest work on the anniversary of its release date. What ensues is not only a highly informative and emotional examination of the 31-track project, but a cross-check of all the relevant events that lead up to its making.
Recorded live at Classic Album Sundays in London.

The Infamous 20 Year Tribute Mix - Mixed by J. Rocc

I woke-up at about 4:30 this morning, accepted that I was wide-awake, looked at my phone, and SAW THIS ON MY TWITTER TIMELINE!  Highly Recommended (to say the least).

February 10th, 2006 (A Donuts Retrospective)

Excerpt: There it was.  Right there on the display shelf with all the other new releases of note: J. Dilla's soon to be legendary Donuts album.  I'd like to say I grabbed the album without hesitation.  In fact, what I'd really like to say is that I copped the album three days earlier (on its actual release date).  The fact of the matter (as I've written several times on this blog) is that my relationship with Dilla (who I originally knew as Jay Dee) was always complicated.  I loved Dilla's production on Slum Village's first two albums (hell, I still have my test pressing of Fall in Love that I bought at SV's Fantastic Vol. 2 release party).  However, I also associated Dilla as being the producer behind ATCQ's worst two albums and Common's transformation from "hungry" MC to "flower-power" MC.

DJ Premier Spins Live on 93.9 WKYS: EZSTREETSHOW (February 2015)

For some reason Primo (or is it Premo/Preemo? Can somebody resolve this dispute with 100% certainty?) brings forward his best efforts on live radio mixes. At least to my personal taste, his radio mixes are always technically superior and seemingly more thoughtful than his live performances, in addition to his recorded mixes. This video is a prime example.
