Solid Steeel Radio Show A(11/18/16): Mighty Atom - Endtroducing Tribute Mix
Highly Recommended mix of samples used by DJ Shadow in his classic Entroducing album.
Solid Steel (18th November) 20 years ago this weekend in November 1996, Josh Davis aka DJ Shadow released his landmark album 'Endtroducing'. It was made almost entirely of samples and with the help of his Akai MPC60, he produced an iconic album that sits firmly in many top album lists. To celebrate this anniversary, Mighty Atom has put together an amazing tribute mix deconstructing the album and rebuilding it track by track, sample by sample, along with some remixes, covers and interview clips.
As with previous tribute mixes for The Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, Nas, De La Soul and Beck, it's done with the same attention to detail. We also have an archive DJ Shadow Solid Steel mix from 2000 at SolidSteel.net plus an interview he did with Coldcut as part of the Quannum Projects release on Ninja Tune that year.
The Endtroducing - 20th Anniversary Endtrospective Edition is available now with remixes by Clams Casino, Hudson Mohawke, Salva, Prince Paul, Bondax, Karma Kid and more.

Live from the Streets: Ol' Dirty Bastard
Mr. Green is f*cking ill.
'Russel Jones aka Ol' Dirty Bastard was born on November 15th and he passed away on November 13th. Every year, his family and friends wish that more people celebrated these dates. The Live from the Streets crew and ODB's family have teamed up to create a special episode out of old VHS tapes. The episode drops to celebrate the legendary artist and to remind people to always remember this week as both a high and low point of hip hop culture. In the end, we all need to celebrate the legacy of ODB.'In a related note, Stoney mixes coming soon featuring Guru, Rakim, and ODB. What is a Stoney mix? You will soon learn.
Huge thanks to ODB, Momma Cherry, Rza, Ashley, Barson, Menace, Missery, Icelene and of course Sean the White Rapper for making the whole thing happen. RIP to the legendary ODB, he will never be forgotten.
P.S. More ODB tributes are in the works... stay tuned. If you are on the east coast, his family is throwing a one of kind tribute show in Brooklyn on November 18th... buy tickets here: http://bit.ly/2f1KhiS
**Please share this video with your friends, family and everyone who you think would appreciate it. We don't have any record label, media company, tv network or marketing budget so we need people to spread the word.**
Beastie Boys 'Licensed to Ill' 30th Anniversary Minimix - Mixed by DJ Bobafatt
I was never a huge Beastie's fan; but this mix is excellent. Highly Recommended.
This week marks the 30th Anniversary of Beastie Boys' debut album 'Licensed to Ill'. In celebration, London's DJ BobaFatt has put together this great megamix of the classic Def Jam LP, a selection of the samples from which it was created and some of those who in turn sampled it. First aired on Huey Morgan's BBC Radio 6 show this past weekend, you can now relive the magic of this influential album here on Mixcloud.
Check out complete sample listings for the album here: http://www.whosampled.com/album/Beast...
Jeff Weiss: Against all odds, A Tribe Called Quest delivers one final masterpiece
This Jeff Weiss article beautifully captures the significance of ATCQ's recent release We got it from here...Thank You 4 Your Service. Below are two ponient passages that I believe capture the unprecedented nature of Tribe's most recent classic effort. READ ARTICLE HERE.
What the foursome (also including Jarobi White and Ali Shaheed Muhammad) has achieved is almost unthinkable: shedding two decades of rust to create something that neither traffics in nostalgia nor mimics the past, while retaining the Day-Glo fluorescence, mystic chords, and jazz-fortified aesthetic that made them stars in the first place. If Phife didn’t update his references to Muggsy Bogues for ones in favor of John Wall, you could almost be convinced that this was originally recorded in 1992 or 1998 or 2006....
...There are few, if any, hip-hop analogues for this achievement. Dr. Dre’s “Compton” followed a decade-and-a-half hiatus, but ultimately felt like an impressive coda celebrating a long-extinct golden era. De La Soul’s recent effort this year proved exactly how halfway attempts to modernize your sound can lead to it seeming monochrome. If anything, “We Got It” is the nexus between D’Angelo’s “Black Messiah” and David Bowie’s “Blackstar.” It is at times political, at times spiritual, at all times focused on leaving behind a profound artifact. To paraphrase Auden, this shows an affirming flame at a time beleaguered by negation and despair.

Excellent mix of assorted of funk and soul.
Horizontal Rain! Funny smelling cigarettes! Entirely inedible food! Tiny beers! It must be Utrecht record fair time again! Graven in de kratten! Niet meer kroketten! etc etc.
This is just a small selection of the huge haul of awesome wax I got at last year's world's largest record fair. None of the batty synth, Turkish or Sri Lanken stuff on here - all funk and soul.

NY Times: Loss Haunts A Tribe Called Quest’s First Album in 18 Years
Red Bull Music Academy Lecture (Montreal 2016): Ka
If you're a regular on this blog and you're not up on Ka, then you need to start listening to his albums (all of which are impeccable IMO) IMMEDIATELY. Simply put, Ka's music; lyrical content, stripped down production; and DYI style of distribution and marketing are absolutely inspiring.
Ka witnessed the genesis of hip-hop growing up in Brownsville, Brooklyn. He learned how to become a rapper first with Natural Elements and later as half of Nightbreed. But it wasn't until his first album, Iron Works, made its way to GZA that things began to change after the Wu-Tang MC had him guest on his 2008 track “Firehouse.” By the time Ka’s next LP, Grief Pedigree, dropped in 2012, he’d honed his stark, minimal style to perfection and has been acclaimed for it since. In control of everything – rhymes, beats, videos, distribution – Ka is a single-minded force in rap. Sitting with Jeff Mao at the 2016 Red Bull Music Academy, Ka talks about growing up in Brownsville, the escapism of art, the reality of life as a man, and the patience needed to find and accept your own voice.
