"Peace to all the mc's, dj's, writers, and b-boys that represent all over the world. I had to do a mix dedicated to all the cities of the world that rep for the hip hop nation. I miss the golden age of hip hop and some of the tracks on this mix bring you back to that era. Always in good taste, I blend different styles of music to paint the big picture. Live at a city near you is some good music, go support... save the music... earth too!" - Omega NYC

Taster's Choice Vol. 1 - Mixed by J.Rocc

If you need to know what's on this mix, this mix is not for you.

Taster's Choice Vol. 1 - Mixed by J.Rocc (zshare download)

** Starting today I am going to upload all the mixes on sharebee.com. This way you can download the mix using different host sites. You can click on the picture for the sharebee link, or click on the zshare link for those of you who prefer to use zshare (which I know is many of you). I'm doing this to protect against another zshare crash so that I don't have to re-up all the mixes again.

While I'm talking about uploading, can anybody explain to me why people use rar. files instead of just using a zip. file? Is this a mass web conspiracy to cause pipo endless frustration? Or, is there some intelligent reason why some of you use rar. files?

Hustler of Culture

Big ups to my man Derick over at Manifestworldwide for the dope t-shirts I found in my mailbox last night. Who is Derik? You may ask. Well, you might better know him for his artwork on Little Brother's "Get Back" LP. For all you true schoolers out there, check out my man's Spring 09 collection here. Homeboy's clothing company is a straight labor of love. D loves the culture, period. Some of us rap, some of us break-dance, some of us make beats, some of us make mixes, and some of us make t-shirts. Whatever it is, game recognize game.

Dilated Classics - Mixed by Babu

Somehow this promo mixtape never found its way to me during all the pre-Platform LP hype. Fortunately, my man Omega NYC dug this one out of an old shoe box.

Samplology ( A Gangster Chapter) - Mixed by DJ Parler

I've got to say that the American Gangster album is one of my favorite albums of the last few years. I love the concept and how it was inspired by the movie, and I especially love all the sample-based music thanks to Puffy and the Hitman (yes, Puffy). Below is a nice mix of the samples used in the album.

Live in Japan - Mixed by the Beat Junkies

This bad boy has been circulating the web all week. Below is Rhettmatic's explanation of the mix.

"Peace Everyone,

Happy New Years! I thought I share some old live recordings of the Beat Junkies to start off the new year.....

This particular recording was a recorded live in Japan in the August of 2002. We were celebrating our 10 Year Anniversary of the Beat Junkies throughout the whole year.....the crew was founded in 1992 and we are probably the last of the remaining 3 major Turntabist crews that came out in the early 90's during the Turntablists/Battle Djs Golden Era. The Invisibl Skratch Piklz broke up and the X-Ecutioners no longer have the original member line up and went thru a couple of line up changes before they took a break (the X-Ecutioners later came back together with original members Rob Swift, Roc Raida, Total Eclipse with new members Precision & Boogie Blind....Mr. Sinister left the group after their 2nd album dropped).

Also during that time, alot of stuff was going on with the crew. We officially started our label, Beat Junkie Sound, as well as making that transition into a small business corporation. We dropped a few vinyl singles as well as releasing the 1st Turntable Instrumental album by our fellow Beat Junkie, D-Styles. The breakthrough album was called "Phantsmagoria". J.Rocc, Melo-D, & myself were special guests on Dilated Peoples' "Expansion Team" album, recording a song with Babu called "Dilated Junkies". We were doing productions, dropping mixtapes left and right, & doing scratches for Hip Hop records. We dropped our 1st ever DVD called "Private Stash" and half of the crew (Babu, J.Rocc, Melo-D, Mr. Choc, Icy Ice, Curse, & myself) were on the airwaves, both on 2 major Radio stations in LA: Power 106 & 92.3 The Beat. We were still doing our monthly event, "Nightlife", at the Knitting Factory in Hollywood (we started NIGHTLIFE around 2001). Babu was pretty much involved with Dilated and myself with the Visionaries.....and for the most part, this was time when all four of us (Babu, Melo-D, J.Rocc, & myself or sometimes the combo would interchange with either Shortkut and/or D-Styles in the line-up as well) would still tour & perform heavily as a group.

So fast forward to August 2002, Dilated Peoples & the Beat Junkies were asked to perform at the Technics' 30 Yr Anniversary to commemorate the 30 years that the Technics 1200 Turntable has been around in the business. Dilated & ourselves were the headliners, but we were also sharing the stage with Japan's very own Heavyweights: Dj Muro, Dj Krush, & Mighty Crown (Japan's top Reggae Soundsystem & the 1st Japanese crew to win the Reggae World Soundclash). We were able to extend our trip to throw a "NIGHTLIFE" event in Japan and to celebrate the Junkies' 10 Yr. Anniversary. My main man Koreishi (he used to work for a import company called "Metrolounge") helped to coordinate our 10 Yr Anniversary.......At the our Anniversary show, we had Dj Tashi (92 DMC Japan Champ) do an opening party rocking set and of course we had Rakaa Iriscience handling the mic duties. This was a 2 Hour performance/party rocking set; 5 turntables, 4 mixers, 2 Pioneer EFX500 boxes, & the real kicker.....RECORDS! Yes people, this was waay before the Serato explosion. Anyways, the first 5 minutes is basically us rocking a Turntable band set (basically all of us on one turntable each: Babu = Lead Vocals, Melo-D = Lead Guitars, J-Rocc = Percussion & Rhythm Section, & me = The Drummer). The rest of the mix is pretty much our individual party rocking sets gettin down, "Beat Junkie Style". Evidence (Dilated Peoples), Dj Muro, GM Yoshi, & Key-Kool (Visionaries) were in the crowd.

So yeah, a little blast from the past for all you turntable junkies/dj afficinados...giving you a taste what we were doing in 2002......."

Happy New Year again...enjoy folks.

City of God's Son - By Kenzo Digital

Pretty cool concept, though I'm not convinced about the execution. At the very least, you've got to give dude credit for creativity. I think I may bight this guy and release a trailer before my next mix. Let me know what you all think (definitely worth a listen).

SouthernPlayalisticTurntableBlendingMuzik - Mixed by Pipomixes

This mix is about ten years overdue. Fortunately, Big Boi's latest single "Royal Flush" forced me to realize how dope Outkast has always been, and continues to be. Outkast's first three albums are straight classic, period. Adding to an already classic catalog, their last two albums have had enough gems to keep the finickiest of heads satisfied. I'm sure some of you will bitch and moan about me leaving out your favorite Outkast song. Before you do, remember that this is a mix. If you want to hear the "Best of Outkast" buy their "best of" album. However, I will say this, two bonafied Outkast classics were left on the cuttingroom floor because they simply did not fit into the mix. I'll let all of you guess which songs I'm talking about. Whoever guesses correctly first will be recognized as the official pipomixes.blogspot.com Outkast Guru (sorry, that was the best prize I could think of). Enjoy the mix!

Video: DJ Joe Cooley Live (1987)

I thought this video would be a nice compliment to yesterday's post. I don't know what's more classic about this video, the fact that Joe Cooley was doing things with the turntable in 1987 that I'm still trying to figure out in 2009, or the fact that he is doing all this at Banning High School. Imagine a deejay like _________ (fill in your favorite dj) rocking your local high school dance. Simply classic.

BTW, just like the old KDAY mixes, you're going to have to raise the volume on this bad boy to hear it.

Saturday Night Live Mix (KDAY 1580 AM) - Mixed by Joe Cooley

Great mix from back in day on the legendary airwaves of 1580AM KDAY. If you lived in the L.A. area during the 1980's and don't have memories of squeezing your ear to an old radio and listening to the static-filled KDAY mixes then you are either (a) younger than 25 years-old, or (b) were too busy listening to Cindy Lauper in the 80's to have experienced the golden age of hip hop. To learn more about KDAY, go here.

I know these guys aren't retiring to the Hamptons with this deejay ish, but somebody please tell me that they're able to make a living off of this skill. It just doesn't seem right to be as good at something as Shortkut and all the rest are (J.Rocc, Revolution, P, Jazzy Jeff, etc...), and not be able to eat off of it.
