My partner in deejay crime hits us off with another dope mix of an album most of us (myself included) slept on. Below is the description of the mix.
"Before Slum Village dropped their signature sound on the LP Fantastic Vol2 (2000), their was a young hip hop artist by the name of Dred Scott reshaping the sound of hip hop music, then unknown and not yet popularized as of 1994. A few of us may remember a song he did called "Check the Vibe." This track featured Adriana Evans, a soulful young singer from San Fran who relocated to LA to pursue a career in music. In 1997 she partnered with Dred Scott and the result was her self titled debut album. The album's production is thanks to Dred Scott. If anybody out there missed this album here is a chance to rediscover a classic!"

To a producer who doesn't sample, the highest compliment you can give to one of their beats is to ask where they got the sample from. Well, the highest compliment you can give a deejay who puts together a live mix is to tell him that it sounds too good to have been recorded live. This my friends, is one of those mixes. Listen and enjoy.

Another in-depth interview with Z-Trip. Here, Z-Trip talks about how he became a deejay, the size of his record collection, the rise of mash-ups, and how serato has hurt the cohesion of many dj sets.

Cool little interview with my man DJ Neil Armstrong. In this interview, Neil Armstrong discusses his experiences as the tour deejay for Jay-Z, and how he went from engineering student to professional deejay.
I told all of you these tribute mixes would start rolling in. Well, not exactly. This mix was created over three years ago by Ludacris's deejay, DJ Jaycee. In addition to the excellent track selection, you can tell that Jaycee put in some real work on this bad boy. I should go straight to mixtape hell for not knowing about this mix earlier. Editor's commentary: I know death turns us all into heros and wonderful people. Certainly, MJ's music and performing abilities were second to none. That being said, please spare me all the commentary about how wonderful a person Michael Jackson was. Let's focus all the tributes on the man's musical contribution. Anything else is pure speculation.

The video is worth a watch just to see Jr. Gong getting down on the MPC. Nothing special, but I didn't know Gong Jr. used the MP. In terms of the album: I hate to say this because I think both Nas and Damian Marley's hearts are in the right place, but the little music I've heard from the upcoming album doesn't sound wonderful. Maybe I'll be surprised. But so far, I'd be lying if I said I'm counting the days until the album drops.

I imagine that the death of MJ will bring about a slew of tribute mixes. Note to all deejays: Before you do a tribute mix, make sure that it's as good, or better than this one (which will be tough to beat).
Yes, this is a repost.

Very thoughtful interview with PBW going into in-depth discussions of all things StoneThrow related. Peanut Butter Wolf runs through a stack of Stones Throw vinyl while reminiscing about such projects as My Vinyl Weighs A Ton, Jaylib, Donuts, Ode to the Ghetto, and Super Duck Breaks. While talking about Donuts, he goes into some of the more intimate details surrounding J Dilla’s death, sudden press interest after Dilla’s passing, and Ma Dukes’ current financial situation. The stuff about Dilla's estate will blow you away.
Here's the writeup from Soulman.
"Just when you thought I was retired from the break mix game (I thought I was retired too, who knew)... I started working on this mix almost exactly one year ago and finally finished it today while the wife was at the movies with the kids watching Up (they said it was good). The original idea was to do a joint with all kinds of weird records from a bunch of different genres and countries. Somehow, it ended up being all rock records. Or at least records that would probably be filed in the rock section at your friendly neighborhood record shoppe. That's all I'll say about it, other than this is probably one of my weirder mixes- definitely maintaining the basic Soulman style but with some strange deviations from my traditional format as well. I gotta admit this is one of my favorites- I'm rarely pleased with the finished product of anything I do, but I must say that I was very happy with the results this time.
Peep it for yourself down below, and if you like it please feel free to share it with others, post it up on your blog or bootleg that schitt and sell it behind the counter at the corner bodega along with the apple blunts and loosies. It's free, do what you will with it.
P.S. - sorry but I didn't do a tracklist for this and I honestly don't even remember what more than half of these songs are... I just grabbed whatever rock records were laying around at the time and played whatever sounded half decent. Dollar bin to ultra rare psych... it's all over the place."

As far as I can remember, I've never seen any videos on the net that show Rza's studio. This video shows Rza's beat process when making the soundtrack to Afro Samurai. The sound quality isn't wonderful, but it isn't anything that raising the volume on you computer won't fix.
A lot of this video is in German, but it's worth a watch anyway. Most of the discussion surrounds the topic of crate diggin and the price hikes of famous breaks.

Another cool little video of Marco Polo's home studio.
For this Friday's re-post I'm posting a mix I wouldn't say is slept-on, but I will say that it is definitely under appreciated. As a rule, any J.Rocc (and Rhettmatic for that matter) mix that has less than 1,000 downloads will be posted again out of principle alone. Below is the original post.
"Two Beatjunkies getting down on the turntables like only they can. If you are a fan of the Beatjunkies than you know what you're in for. If you need a tracklist to see if you want to listen to the mix you probably shouldn't be listening to the mix to begin with."

In this interview, Large Pro discusses how he initially got involved with hip hop, the influences on his development as a producer, the early days of working with Nas, and sampling. After watching this interview I have concluded that Extra P is one cool and humble dude. The kind of guy you only wish good things for. Enjoy.
Part II
Here's a cool video I found of everybody's new favorite producer, Flying Lotus. Flying Lotus is that dude, and I'll admit that I'm a little late on the bandwagon, but can somebody explain to me what the fuss is all about? I'm not trying to argue that dude isn't nice. I'm just trying to figure out what he does that is so unique. From what I can gather, he makes beats using Trigger Finger and some secret software (which is probably Ableton). Is there something else that I'm missing? My impression is that he's doing something new that nobody else is doing. If that is so, can somebody explain to me what it is because I haven't picked-up on it yet.
First off, big ups to my man Joey Stratts for the cover art. If any of you fellow deejays or bloggers are in need of some graphic art, hit up my man at joe.serhan@hotmail.com. Okay, okay, enough with the shout-outs. As the title suggests, the mix consists of all Pete Rock produced tracks. It's more on the minimega-mix side of things because it only runs at about 23 minutes and change. I know, I know, why so short? I don't have a good answer for that one other than I always error on the side of quality over quantity, and that my next mix (all Doom) will be at least double in length. The mix consists of 36 Pete Rock tracks mixed into a 23 minute package. To make things interesting, I'll send over a copy of the very hard to find Taster's Choice Vol. 4 (mixed by J.Rocc) to whoever is the first to post or email me a correct tracklist. As always, a lot of time and energy went into crafting this mix, so I hope you all enjoy the mix half as much as I enjoyed making it.
I don't have more to say other than I wish you all a great week.

I don't have too much time to explain the concept of this mix. In a nutshell, this mix is a cover mix. As far as I know, this is the first mix that I've heard of that is a "cover" of another mix. Below is the description as described by the Grand Groove DJ's.
"Grand Groove DJ's: This mix is inspired by the work of legendary New York mixtape DJ’s G-BO THE PRO AND DOUBLE R, with special thanks to our homie DJ NEIL ARMSTRONG for putting us up on game. Awhile back Royale showed me G-Bo the Pro and Double R #21. It was an instant hit receiving HEAVY rotation in the car. Roy then suggested the idea that we re-do the tape, a cover per se, adding our own Grand Groove touches throughout. Covering a mixtape, who does that!? So that’s what we did! We re did the B Side of the tape and flipped the cover too (thanks to Committee Design). While we kept a lot of the original tracklisting we also included some of our own personal favourites and original blends that we felt would fit in the mix. Here’s the original cover and tracklisting…"

I think PUTS and this mix are both criminally slept on. As a result, I thought this Best of PUTS mix was worthy of a re-post. Original post entry below.
I thought I'd post this Best of PUTS mix to compliment yesterday's post. I received this mix a few years back because I ordered a bunch of records from undergroundhiphop.com. I must say that over the last few years no mix that I own has had as much replay value as this one. It's the perfect mix for when you are in the mood to just lay back, have a beer, and think about nothing.
