Here Ya Go: Pipo's Record Collection and Studio Pics

A couple of weeks ago a few of you requested that I post some pics of my record collection and home "studio." My wife and I live in a two bedroom condo where the second bedroom is primarily used for my music. Originally, the second bedroom was called The Cave because I was the only one making use of this space. Below are some old pics of The Cave that capture most of my record collection at the time (circa 2005)

A couple of years ago, three things happened that changed the original "Cave" setup. First, my propensity to buy records was driving me broke and sucking up the little space we had in our 1000 sq. foot condo. Second, I bought Torq and figured that I could cut my record collection in half (because it mostly consisted of doubles) by digitizing my vinyl and storing my doubles at my parents' house. Third (and most importantly), my wife got hip to the game and began wondering out-loud why she didn't have her own "Cave." In the interest of making a happy home, I halved my record collection and did some remodeling to make the second bedroom a little more wife friendly. Below are some pics of what is now called The Studio.

Below, is one last pic of what the Studio will look like if Pipo doesn't figure out how to get into a home with a third bedroom within the next year or two.

In the Rain - Mixed by DJ Steve1der

We are just beginning to dry-off from a week of straight rain here in socal. For us, that's the equivalent of some apocalyptic event. In the spirit of all that rain, I found this wonderful "rain" themed mix by DJ Steve1der on his soundcloud site.

Babu Live at the Do-Over (9/13/09)

Some video footage from Babu's live Do-Over set from a few months back. In seeing many deejays play Truth Hurts' "Addictive" (myself included), I've come to the conclusion that everybody seems to have the same "sexy" dance when that song plays (see the 2:39 mark).

Grandmaster Flash Interview from 1986

Great video flashback from 1986 where Grandmaster Flash explains the craft of DJ‘ing and the origin of MC’ing while going to work on Bob James’ “Take Me To The Mardi Gras.”

Wake Up Show Mos Def Tribute Mix - Mixed by DJ Raichous

A few months ago I was in the early stages of working on a Mos Def mix. One Sunday night I heard this mix while listening to the World Famous Wake Up Show and decided that I should begin to work on something else.

Say Brother: A Collection of Songs - Mixed by Jared from the SoundLibrary NYC

I got tell you all, I started this blog just so that I'd have an outlet to post my own mixes. Along the way, I thought it would be a good idea to post other people's mixes in order to generate traffic so that that there would be visitors actually frequenting the blog when I got around to posting my own mixes. Two years later, the basic concept of the blog remains the same though the blog has taken on a life of its own as the number of visitors frequenting the site has increased. Now, it has almost gotten to the point where I feel that the blog is performing some sort of public service. It is very rewarding to read all of your complimentary comments and emails about the blog. With that said, one of the perks of hosting this blog is that many of you have been very generous in sharing with me your favorite mixes. Today's mix is one of those gems that I would have never heard if not for the generosity of one of you. Apparently, only 200 copies of this mix were generated. All you record nerds will especially enjoy this one. Have a great week.

Ski Beatz Making a Beat with Ableton Live

I hope Ableton Live is paying Ski Beatz well because these videos are flooding the net. In any event, it is always fun to see one of the greats making a beat (and getting a glimpse at their home studio never hurts).

Soliloquy of GangStarr - Mixed by Pipomixes

I thought I'd go with one of my own (it is my blog after all) for this week's re-post. Below is my description of the mix.

Making a GangStarr mix is a lot like making a pizza. It's difficult to royally screw up, but it's very easy to make it bland and forgettable. On the other hand, if you can make a great pizza there is nothing better in the world to eat. In creating this GangStarr mix, I am well aware that I am kinda, sorta, reinventing the wheel here. However, you may notice that there are countless Best of Primo mixes, but not many mixes devoted just to GangStarr. Anybody who is a Primo fan knows that he saved his best beats for the GangStarr albums. Enter, the whole theme of the mix. With this mix, I wanted to do exactly what the title suggests, create a soliloquy of GangStarr beats with a few Guru verses thrown-in here and there. In other words, shine a light on Primo's GangStarr production without boring an audience that is very familiar with the music, but still entertain that same audience with the quality of the mix.
With 31 tracks squeezed into just 33 minutes, the mix is a potent blend of 90% of the essential
GangStarr tracks (I'll leave 10% for all of you to moan and groan about). While listening to the mix, I challenge you to think of any Hip Hop act who could fill 33 minutes (with 31 tracks no less) with the same level of quality music.

Downtown Raw Funk & Soul 45's - Mixed by DJ Prestige

Very smooth and well executed mix. Below is DJ Prestige's description of the mix.

This mix has a bunch of stuff I dug up in the UK and in Asbury Park, at the Spot, and a few reissues and redits that I really enjoy and haven’t included on a mix yet. The mix starts off with a Modern Funk monster from Australia, and has everything from UK Library music, Disco Soul, Northern Soul, gritty Funk, and some Sweet Soul to round it off. You may recognize some voices on there as well in between tracks, I dug up a few oldies from some guest mixes I did years ago. Please enjoy this mix, and if you dig it, pass it on. It clocks in around 42 minutes.

Bittersweet - Mixed by DJ Neil Armstrong

Since some of you were less than satisfied with the Neil Armstrong post from earlier in the week, I thought I'd use this re-post Friday to post a Neil Armstrong mix that is more critically acclaimed.

A Decade of Flying Lotus - Mixed by Gaslamp Killer

An excellent mix of mostly unheard Flying Lotus beats. This mix was posted via Brainfeeder over the holiday break so I thought I'd post it in case any of you missed it. This is a must listen even if you're not a hardcore Flylo fan (which would include me).

In an unrelated note, how is limelinx working for all of you? In case you're wondering, I opted away from usershare because it deletes files after 30 days instead of 60.

Dusty Fingers The Mix CD - Mixed by Danny Dan the Beat Man

Every deejay (and most beatmakers) has at least one copy of Dusty Fingers. The Dusty Fingers series is similar to Ultimate Beats and Breaks, except that Dusty Fingers LP's consist of rarer and less conventional breaks than UBB. All sorts of speculation and rumors have surround the Dusty Fingers series in attempt to uncover the culprits behind the issuing of these records. Personally, I'm still not convinced that Diamond D isn't behind these records. In any event, this mix is without a doubt a must listen. Enjoy.

I've heard a lot of Gaslamp Killer, but I've never really been able to see or listen to any of his mixes. If this video is an indication, dude deserves props.
