Chocolate Covered Samples - Mixed by J-Live

I've always known that J-Live is a deejay and that he incorporate his deejay skills into his act, but I had never taken the time to listen to any of his mixes. Boy, was I skeeping, J-Live's deejay game is on the same level as his MC skills. And that's saying a lot.

The Making of 'Hard Knock Life'

Cool video with Jay-Z and 45 King discussing the making of "Hard Knock Life." I like how Jay says, "He just disappears for years." I don't know for sure, but I don't think that's the case. Dudes just sleep on the 45 King. Why? I'll never understand. After all, he is responsible for both Jay-Z and Eminem's most critically acclaimed single. BTW, for more video of 45 King cutting up 45's, go here.

Leisure Mixtape Contest Finalists - You Decide the Winner

Last month I posted about a Leisure Mixtape Contest hosted by yours truly and Tucker & Bloom. The contest rules were simple, send a 40 minute mix consisting of music that is either Brazilian, soul, or funk themed breaks. The winner receives a Tucker & Bloom record bag worth $250 and distribution with all Tucker & Bloom purchases. Now, we need all of your input. The top 3 mixes are posted below. We received dozens of excellent submissions, but the three mixes below were the cream of the crop according to a panel of judges consisting of Cosmo Baker, Case from Tucker & Bloom, and myself. Before you all roll your eyes about not getting a new mix to download today, you are actually getting 3 mixes today. Let me assure all of you that all three mixes are top quality and I guarantee satisfaction. Pipo doesn't have time for amateur hour, these mixes are of the same level of all mixes posted on this blog.

Please take the time to listen to all three mixes and vote for your favorite mix in either the comments box or email me at pipomixes@yahoo.com (put contest in the subject line). For obvious reasons, anonymous comments will not count. Voting closes on Friday, February 26th at 11:59pm pst.

I'm no Dilla newjack, but I never knew about this beat until today. As much as I love Dilla's production, I would have never thought Biggie would sound good over one of his beats. Beat Junkies Dilla Tribute Nightlife

I've got a question for all you LA heads on this blog that have been to one of these Dilla Nightlife events. Which one of the following best describes your experience.

A. Seeing the Beatjunkies is always cool, listening to all Dilla music is always cool, but seeing all the Dilla Stans (most of whom weren't dilla heads until 06) was a bit annoying.

B. Standing in a long line behind a bunch of newjack Dilla Stans wasn't worth it and felt a little creepy.

C. I wish there was more female Dilla stans

D. It was the night of my life.

I haven't been to any of these Dilla Nightlife events and I figure my experience would be somewhere close to options A or B. However, I can't say because I haven't been. I'd be interested in feedback from any of you who have been to one of these events.

Lovers and Friends - Mixed by Soulman

When Soulman mixes, we should all listen. Soulman's description of the mix below.

I'd like to say this is perfect since this is Valentines Day, but some of the songs are more on some "I lost you and we're not together any more" steez rather than some "I love you and you love me and we'll be together FOREVER" schitt. There's plenty of that too, but I'm just giving y'all that disclaimer before you play this mix for your sweetie tonight and she gets depressed and leaves your ass. Regardless, it's a lot of great music so enjoy.

Timeless: A Suite for Ma Dukes - An Incredible Night

My favorite Dilla experience did not directly involve Dilla. Read the original post below.

Sunday night I had the pleasure to attend A Suite for Ma Dukes. It was an incredibly inspiring night. The night started out with DJ House Shoes spinning about a 1 hour set of Dilla joints. At first, you could tell that House Shoes felt a little awkward spinning in front of a crowd that was entirely seated inside an amphitheater more accustomed to hosting symphonies, than hip hop shows. After about 10 minutes, House Shoes got into his groove and performed an excellent set. Following the set from DJ House Shoes, J.Rocc performed for about 1 1/2 hours, spinning an array of Dilla cuts and breaks. As usual, J.Rocc did not disappoint. Then came the highlight of the night, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson's 40 piece orchestra came out and performed 2 hours of original compositions influenced by Dilla. This was some serious next level sh*t! The night was inspiring beyond description. So inspiring, that it was worth not falling asleep until 4am (having to wake-up at 6:30). Why was I up until 4am? You ask. I was up until 4am because the evening had me on such a high that I simply could not calm down enough to fall asleep.

Dilla Midnight Snack - Mixed by RP3

The best way that I can describe this mix is that it is a collection of songs influenced by Dilla. It's not a sample mix, it's not a mix of Dilla songs, but a mix of original songs (at least, I think so) with elements of Dilla songs. Before I confuse you further, just listen to the mix because it's worth your time.

Beatlemania - Mixed by J3

I posted this mix just before the new year and at the time I didn't know who was responsible for this excellent mix. Since then, it has been brought to my attention that J3 is the man behind this musical masterpiece. So, to give credit where credit is due, this Beatlemania mix gets an expedited re-post.

In an unrelated note, all of yesterday's comments indicated that you all are for another Dilla week. Before you all get all dilla crazy on me, my plan is to do what I did last year where I posted all Dilla mixes and Dilla related videos. There is not a lot of new stuff so most of the content will be recycled from last year (not all, but most). Considering that the blog's hits has tripled in the last year the content will be new to many of you, but not all of you. Now what do you all think? To dilla or not to dilla?

We Got the Jazz - Mixed by Pipomixes

I am constantly thinking of different themes to build a mix around. With the completion of each mix I typically fall into a 2-3 week funk where I try to think of a new theme for my next mix. Following the Folger's Blends mix I was struggling to think of a new theme. Then, one day while doing a random google search I stumbled onto the above logo. At first glance, I thought the logo was straight dope. However, the logo became even cooler when I learned that it was the creation of my favorite t-shirt designer, Derek from Manifest Worldwide. Given that the saying behind the logo comes from a ATCQ song, I was originally intending to do a Tribe mix. However, since Tribe mixes are a dime a dozen I went in the direction of creating a mix that attempts to capture the jazzy vibe that groups like Tribe and Digable Planets spawned. As the title suggests, all songs on this mix incorporate jazz based samples. The track selection includes music from jazzy groups and producers such as A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, Diamond D, Black Moon, De La Soul, Madlib, No ID, Gang Starr, Showbiz & AG, Big L, The Roots, and Nas (I think that's all of them?). Half the fun of making this mix was doing the research to ensure that all songs maintained a jazz break. Some were no brainers, but other songs with jazz breaks were quite surprising. Jazz based samples have always given a special vibe to hip hop music so I hope this mix captures that magic. Thanks again to Derek at Manifest for inspiring the mix's theme. Speaking of Manifest, check out Manifest's grab bag sale where you can get a set of 3 randomly selected t-shirts for $25 here. I hope you all enjoy the mix.

The Book of Love Vol. 1 - Mixed by DJ Steve1der

Since today is the first day of February, I thought I'd post a little something to get you all in the spirit of Valentine's Day. Below is what Steve1der had to say about the mix.

I MADE THIS MIX IN 2007, RIGHT WHEN I GOT SERATO & REALIZED ALL I HAD TO DO WAS TYPE A WORD IN & ANY SONG WITH THAT WORD WOULD BE GROUPED TOGETHER (MUCH EASIER THAN GOING THRU ALL MY RECORDS). THIS IS THE RESULT: THE BOOK OF LOVE VOL.1. AS YOU'D GUESS, THE THEME IS LOVE. THE MIX IS FILLED WITH HIP-HOP, SOUL, DISCO, R&B & REGGAE CLASSICS. I FINISHED VOL.2 (WHICH I WILL POST SOON) & AM CURRENTLY WORKING ON VOLUME 3. ENJOY!!!
