Here is a live recording of a J.Rocc set performed in Dublin back in November 09. I imagine most of you who visit this blog have seen J.Rocc perform live. If you haven't, do yourself a favor and see him if he is ever within driving distance of where you live.

Two of my favorite mixtapes of the last year have come from Mr. Slept-On, DJ Spinna. The Recall was smooth as silk and this Marvin Gaye mix couldn't be better. Listen and enjoy.

A mandatory mix for a Monday morning. Below is the description of the mix.
DJ Nuts is an astute and rigorous historian of Brasil’s vast and varied musical culture. His record collection is legendary; his skills as a DJ are world class. We commissioned him to make this mix to help people understand the extraordinary legacy of Verocai. Many by now know Verocai’s self-titled album, some even know the more popular compositions and arrangements, but none have dug as hard as Nuts. Years of collecting and a strong friendship with Verocai himself have made this historic mix possible. 78 minutes of all Verocai compositions and arrangements is a dream come true.

I highly recommend watching this thoughtful mini documentary about Los Angeles based DJ/producer C-Minus (Lexicon/Power 106/Almighty RuffNexx/Fantastik 4our). I imagine if you are a frequent visitor to this blog and fellow dj/music lover, you'll completely understand C-Minus' musical and deejay philosophies. Just watch.

Hot 97 Guru Tribute Mix - Mixed by Mister Cee (download)
No new mix or video today. Today will be a day of mourning for my man Guru. He may not have been the greatest emcee of all time, but there was something about his voice and flow that was purely magnetic. In my opinion, nobody rode a Primo beat quite like Guru. I would have never been exposed to Langston Hughes and the Harlem Renaissance if not for Guru. Something about his lyrics made me want to be smart. Now, as a grown man, I can only look back at my life and wonder what would have been had I not pursued my education. I'll never really know. What I do know is that for much of my late teens and early twenties my motivation for improving myself came from wanting to be able to drop knowledge the way Guru did throughout all those Gang Starr classics. R.I.P. Guru
I think Mos Def was right when he said that the future of hip hop is in the instrumental album. I think 95% of my favorite releases of the last few years have been without emcees. Since I'm always looking for a new theme to base a mix around, I thought it would be a good idea to mix together my favorite cover songs, tributes, and reinterpretations of hip hop classics that have proliferated over the last few years. Now it just so happens, all these joints (or almost all) are emcee'less. The mix consists of tributes to, reinterpretations of, and covers by Miles Davis, Jeremy Taylor, El Michels Affair, Wu Tang Clan, Isaac Hayes, Biggie Smalls, Frank Sinatra, Madlib, J. Dilla, J. Rawls, Beatnuts, Pete Rock, Eryka Badu, Mr. Chop, A Tribe Called Quest, Carlos Nino & Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Damu the Fudgemunk, Jefferson Airplane, Tom Scott, Oh No, DJ Spinna, Black Moon, John Coltrane, and a few more that I can't remember. Listing all these name I bet you're probably thinking that this mix is like 3 hours long. Wrong. The mix runs just under 25 minutes. I know, I know, why so short? Well, you already know the answer to that. Quality over quantity. In any event, a lot of time, money, energy, and love went into this effort so I hope you all enjoy.
All sorts of funky African rhythms on this bad boy. Have a great week.

Recently, Peter Rosenberg held the latest version of Noisemakers which featured Pete Rock (download entire interview here). As customary with every edition of Noisemakers, some of the beats from Pete Rock's illustrious career were recreated by Daru Jones and The Noize (Daru on drums, Igmar Thomas on trumpet, Chris Rob on keybass, and Jared Jacobs on keys & synths). I think I'm going to have to put live renditions of hip hop songs right up there with videos of bedroom studios, I'm just a sucker for them. Hope you enjoy.

This one was a real fan favorite a while back. Original post below.
I received this gem of a mix in my email about a week ago and I finally got around to giving it a listen. WOW!! Who would of thought our polish brothers could be so damn funky? Being an American, I do admit that I'm guilty of that USA is the center of universe mentality. However, after listening to this mix I'm certainly going to make a greater effort to explore non-American interpretations of funk, soul, hip hop etc... Listen to the mix and enjoy.

With partner Double Dee (Douglas DiFranco; a prince) he co-produced the series of records known as The Lessons: The Payoff Mix, Lesson 2 (The James Brown Mix), Lesson 3 (The History Of Hiphop) for the Tommy Boy label. These analog tape cut-and-paste collages, still widely bootlegged (and wildly illegal), are generally acknowledged as three of the most influential works in the world of hip hop and dance music production.
Cited as definitive influences by DJ Shadow, Cut Chemist, and Fatboy Slim, among others. Add to this the fact that Steinski is one of New York’s most sought-after advertising copy writers and it’s easy to see there is a mind behind all this musical greatness!

Wow, I can't believe it took me so long to re-up this gem. This is the mother of re-ups. Original post below.
DJ Platurn of the Oakland Fader brings you what might be the best DeLa mix I've heard (at least the best mix that focuses on the breaks De La used). Recommended for all, but a must listen for you break heads.
So This Is De La Heaven (Mixed by DJ Platurn)
I have to say that I tend to be really impressed by mixes that are well executed with themes that I wished I had thought of, or mixes with a theme that I intended to do. This one falls in the latter category. The mix incorporates breaks, soundtracks, library records, the whole 9. I highly recommend you give this mix a listen.

Do not sleep on DJ Melo-D. Many of you not from the Southern Cali may not be familiar with how smooth Melo-D is, but trust me when I tell you that nobody mixes like Melo.
Just stumbled onto this mix last night. Fast forward to the 1:15 mark and listen to dude just flip out when he hears J.Rocc go into the Beat It acapella.
