Do-Over Mix - Mixed by J. Rocc (5/16/10) (download)

Original post below.

I don't have too much time to explain the concept of this mix. In a nutshell, this mix is a cover mix. As far as I know, this is the first mix that I've heard of that is a "cover" of another mix. Below is the description as described by the Grand Groove DJ's.

"Grand Groove DJ's: This mix is inspired by the work of legendary New York mixtape DJ’s G-BO THE PRO AND DOUBLE R, with special thanks to our homie DJ NEIL ARMSTRONG for putting us up on game. Awhile back Royale showed me G-Bo the Pro and Double R #21. It was an instant hit receiving HEAVY rotation in the car. Roy then suggested the idea that we re-do the tape, a cover per se, adding our own Grand Groove touches throughout. Covering a mixtape, who does that!? So that’s what we did! We re did the B Side of the tape and flipped the cover too (thanks to Committee Design). While we kept a lot of the original tracklisting we also included some of our own personal favourites and original blends that we felt would fit in the mix. Here’s the original cover and tracklisting…"

I found these Rock the Bells mixes posted on the RTB site. I'm diggin' the whole album concept behind this year's RTB festival. Hopefully, the performances are as good as the concept.

I have not heard the mix yet, but DJ Raichous always comes correct. Hey, why don't we all listen together. Ready, 1,2,3...

You don't see too many Romanian jazz mixes floating around. If fact, this might be the first of its kind (at least, as far as I'm aware of). Expand your horizons and listen to a top quality mix.

Always searching for new video of quality live sets, I was browsing around the Do-Over site when I found this video of DJ Fashen. I had never heard of DJ Fashen before, but anybody who incorporates Do or Die's "Do You Wanna Ride" into their set is going to get love from me. Based on the track selection, I'm guessing that dude is either from the South or has balls that hang to the floor. Either way, any deejay who gets a skinny blond girl in L.A. to say "Uhhh" gets love from Pipo.

Revolution is the Tim Duncan of deejaying. Technically, he simply can't be touched.

Labels: , ,

I guess Revolution was also deejaying on that boat. If you look at the t.v. it appears that this boat party was some sort of Laker party. Seems like a few of you are willing to put your money down to make this Pipomixes party go down. I'll see if I can get in contact with a Beat Junkie or two just to see what their numbers are and determine if this Pipomixes party is just a pipe dream or a legitimate possibility.

J. Rocc and Mr. Choc live on the 2x4's on some yacht in Newport. Man, that's way too much soul for bourgie'ass Newport f*cking Beach. I wonder how much it costs to get those two to rock a private yacht party. Maybe I'll organize a Pipomixes party on one of them yachts with Mr. Choc and the Funk Pres. I think if all of the regular followers pitched in $10 we could do it. Hell, if we all pitched in $10 I think we could cover Choc, J. Rocc, and an open bar. I don't live too far from good ol' newps.

I have received a few requests to re-up a couple of my older mixes, so here you all go. This was the mix that forced me to buy Torq. I remember fiending for "Everything I am" after hearing Graduation and wanting to get that song on my turntables desperately. When the people at Fat Beats told me that the Graduation album wasn't going to be released on vinyl, something had to give. A few days later I was a Torq owner and working on this mix. I still buy vinyl, but not nearly as much as I once did (which is good for my wallet but bad for the record stores)

I've been in a little bit of a state of mourning ever since my beloved Brasil imploded in the second half of the Netherland's game and got knocked out of the World Cup. Another four years of the World Cup having to be away from its rightful home. Another four years of having to hear soccer commentators lick the sweat off the balls of every Spaniard with cleats. Well, at least it wasn't Argentina. In any event, I'll interrupt this World Cup eulogy to inform you that the below mix is a must listen for all of you who enjoy Brasilian music.

I know we are all "hip hop" here, but if you don't have a little room for some Janet in your life, then you have a little too much testosterone in your body. So let your guard down a little, press play, and let your inner R&B come out. Admit it, back in the day when Tribe, De la, and all the rest were dominating the scene, this is what you were really listening to. Props to my man Digumsmak for letting em hang on this one.

Thank you to all of you who purchased the Pipomixes t-shirt. Another run of shirts is on its way to the Pipomixes depot and everything should be all stocked up by next week. I apologize to all of you who have sent emails asking why the shirts are out of stock so quickly. All I can say is that I didn't expect this kind of demand. Hold tight, more t-shirts should be in by next week. For all of my international heads, I'm still working on getting this international shipping thing under control. I am new to this, but I'll get it down eventually. **New mix posted below.**

I haven't actually listened to this mix yet, but Chris Read's track record of mixes speaks for itself. Satisfaction, or your money back. Chris Read's explanation of the mix below.

"BBE is, I can say with some confidence, my favourite record label of recent years in terms of consistency and quality of output. From legendary modern day artists such as Dilla and Pete Rock to compilations of obscure and forgotten gems, it's a label that covers a lot of ground and does it all with style. So it almost goes without saying that putting this mix together was an absolute pleasure. The toughest thing was not deciding what to include but what to leave out. I probably could have made a dozen mixtapes with the pile of records I pulled out before getting started and it would have been simple enough to produce a complete mix of music from any one of the label's many genres, but I wanted to try and represent the label's full range. What I ended up with is a fairly quick paced mix which passes through modern soul, hip hop, funk, boogie, disco, a touch of house, reggae, nu jazz, vocal jazz and dancefloor jazz pretty much in that order with a few little surprises along the way. A mix that's so varied is always going to be a little risky as not everybody shares the same range of tastes but I think I've accurately portrayed the label's range of output and had some fun in the process and that, after all, is the most important thing. If you've checked my previous mixtapes, you'll know what to expect in terms of presentation and mixing style, and if not - well here's your chance... I hope you enjoy!"

If you ask me, American independence and reggae go together like peanutbutter and jelly, blunts and weed, world cups and bad refereeing etc... Top quality reggae mix. Highly recommended.

Re-posting my own stuff today. I don't think I've put more effort into a mix than I did for this PE mix. To say the least, PE is not the most mix friendly music. I think this was my last pre-torq mix if I remember correctly. My original description of the mix is below.

Since many of you seem to be enjoying some of my older mixes, I thought I'd post this Public Enemy mix that I completed in the summer of 2007. I remember seeing PE perform "Harder Than You Think" on Jimmy Kimmel Live a year and a half ago, and I said to myself that PE still had "it." It's not 1988 all over again, but I do feel that every deejay owes PE a tribute mix at some point in their lives. Hope you all enjoy the mix.

There are few combinations better than lemonade and hip hop. This is the perfect mix to get you all in the mood for 4th of July weekend. Below is Case's explanation of the mix.

I have recently been going through music at a fast pace. Maybe it's twitter and blogs, or maybe it come's with the territory in 2010. In any case there is a lot of good music out there, and I've been meaning to highlight a few overlooked treats with a quick mix. We'll I finally got around to recording it this past week, and its here just in time for the first day of summer. The resulting concoction is thirty minutes of both new and ripe (if you will) soulful hip hop tracks, carefully selected for your pleasure, and mixed with just the right amount of sugary cuts. Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is....enjoy
