AEIOU Warmups...the Iron Chef

This is an absolutely incredible mix of random funky, soulful, breaks you'd find on a day of diggin' through various record stores. Excellent song selection accompanied by outstanding cuts and mixing. I'm not exactly sure who the deejay behind this mix is (Iron Chef, AIOU Beats?), so feel free to tell me in the comments section if you know. The deejay behind this mix deserves credit.
Duey FM & Tripledouble's
AEIOU Warmups...the Iron Chef Mix
When visitors come to Philly, we try to give them a slice of life.
Not just a taste of album covers and rotating wax, but the type of everyday culture that inspires our love for music.
So on a whirlwind Spring afternoon, we trooped some out of town guests through
crack-a-dawn fleas, street scapes, dusty shops, greasy Italian lunch counters and our home record sanctuaries.
This mix showcases the random assortment of records that crossed our path during that sunny day in Philadelphia.
Its also a small taste of the madness to come as ...
Duey FM, Master Sinh, and Tripledouble polish up AEIOU 2000.

A Journey Through Sample Land Volume 2 - Mixed by Ruck N' Wiz

I posted volume 1 a few weeks back and here is volume 2 in case some of you didn't see it on the Ruck N' Wiz soundcould page. Highly Recommended.

Ruck N' Wiz are back with the 2nd Part of the "A Journey Through The Samples" Mix.
With a lot of passion and attention for the details they mixed over 200 Samples smoothly together and also crossed the borders of Rap into other Music Genres.

Live from Spacebase Vol. 2 - Ras G

Exactly what you'd expect from Ras G; some futuristic, robotic, soulful, "where the hell did he get this music" type ish.

August Mixtape - Mixed by DJ Ian Head

Blog favorite Ian Head is back with another monthly mixtape. Like most Ian Head mixes, the vibe is cool-out and the mix is filled with all sorts of random dustiness.  Recommended as you commute to work to allow a little zone-out before the grind, or on your way home to escape from the day's grind.
A short mixtape to chill out to as we cruise toward the end of summer. An almost-exact (but not quite) tracklist can be found on my Instagram here:instagram.com/p/r0mgScNFYQ/?modal=true

DOPE DISCO Promo Mix (Aug 2014) - Mixed by DJ Spinna

If Spinna isn't the most diverse deejay in the game, he's definitely right there in the conversation.

Mega Blends - Mixed by Sparkle Motion

Mr. Tobes has expressed on a few occasions via his twitter timeline that he's gunning for that number one spot on the blog's Best Mixes of the Year List.  He along with DJ Yoda (collectively known as Sparkle Motion) have fired a clear warning shot to all potential contenders.  This mix will be particularly enjoyable for those who enjoy their blends extended.  80s hits blended over classic rap beats from the same decade, intermittently sprinkled with a touch of turntablist flair here and there.  Highly Recommended.

Sparkle Motion follow up the hugely successful 'Miracle Blends' mix with the highly anticipated 'Mega Blends', the first ever all out 80s Pop x 80s Rap blend mixtape.
Putting their own unique twist on some of the biggest pop hits of the 80s decade, "Mega Blends" breathes new life into classic Billboard chartbusters by blending them with classic 80s rap instrumentals.

Looking for the Perfect Beat: Gaslamp Killer (Scene Preview)

Looking for the Perfect Beat: Ras G (Scene Preview)

Ras G scene from the feature film 'Looking for the Perfect Beat.' The best glimpse inside Ras' home studio that I've seen.  Enjoy snooping, beat heads.

Looking for the Perfect Beat Documentary: Official Trailer

Do these documentaries ever get released? I'm still waiting for the All Ears doc to surface along with many others whose trailers I've posted over the years.  As much as I love the tantalizing nature of these previews, I WANT TO SEE THE ACTUAL FILM SOMEDAY!  Fingers crossed that this documentary surfaces in some shape or form for the masses to see.

Looking for the Perfect Beat' is a cinéma vérité immersion inside the unique Los Angeles "beat scene" music community, centered around the world famous Low End Theory club night. Filmed over the Summer of 2013, we are given the opportunity to elegantly lift the veil on the personal creative processes of the internationally-acclaimed pillars of the scene. Indie music luminaries such as Thundercat, the Gaslamp Killer, TOKiMONSTA, Jonwayne, Baths, Daedelus, Ras G, Teebs, D-Styles, edIT of the Glitch Mob, Astronautica, Free the Robots, and Matthewdavid are all featured in vivid detail. The soundtrack for the film creates itself live on camera as the film elapses. This avant-garde visual angle on each subject in their respective creative spaces provides for an introspective glimpse into what would otherwise be unseen.

Told as a 24-hour tour throughout the city, the fly-on-the-wall perspective of 'Looking for the Perfect Beat' archives each artist's studio at this moment in history, revealing something not only universally humanizing about the scene's stars, but also telling of the diverse community in which this group of inter-related artists interact. Directed by seasoned music documentarian Matthew F. Smith, and produced by Low End Theory club founder Daddy Kev, 'Looking for the Perfect Beat' provides a holistic view of L.A.'s key players in this generation's electronic music landscape while instilling hope for the future of cross-cultural creative unions.

Tucker & Bloom Presents: Welcome to New Orleans - Mixed by Personify

One of my great regrets is that the one time I was able to visit New Orleans I spent nearly all of my time in strip clubs and not at all the local bars soaking-up the N.O. music flava.  Hopefully, I'll get the opportunity to visit the great city again and do it right.  Until then, I suppose this excellently crafted mix (and watching Treme re-runs) is about as close as I'll get.  Enjoy.

Tucker & Bloom Presents: Welcome to New Orleans mixed by Personify

Welcome to New Orleans: A tribute to New Orleans Funk and Soul is the work of New Orleans native, DJ Personify. Raised in the Crescent City, the die-hard Hip-Hop fan learned early on that many of the samples he discovered originated in New Orleans. He soon became infatuated with the Funk and Soul music recorded there and has spent the better part of the last twenty years immersed in the culture of those records. Personify’s passion for New Orleans' music and culture extends to the present day and is manifested in this DJ mix masterpiece. Lovingly compiled, all of the artists featured on the mix are native to New Orleans with the exception of Hugo Montenegro who plays alongside Al Hirt (a New Orleans native) and The Headhunters, who are included here because of their work with Bill Summers (a life-long New Orleanian). All songs and samples used on this mix were recorded from vinyl sources. You can find a track list and record release notes on the blog at www.tucker-bloom.com. Limited edition CDs with killer artwork and packaging designed by Case Bloom of Tucker & Bloom are also available for pre-order at personify.bandcamp.com/. The CDs are highly limited, so be sure to cop one before they are all gone!

We hope you enjoy and are inspired to go learn more about New Orleans music and culture!

-----------

Welcome to New Orleans is the first in a new series of DJ mixes curated by Tucker & Bloom. Focused on regional music, each mix will feature a DJ and record collector who specializes in the musical history of their town. Be sure to stay follow Tucker & Bloom on Twitter @tuckerbloom for updates on other forthcoming mixes in their new city mixtape series. Searching for Tomorrow: The Story of Madlib and Doom's Madvillainy

I've read quite a few accounts of the Madvillainy album and pretty much thought I knew the whole story behind the making of the classic album.  To my surprise, this incredible Pitchfork article written by Jeff Weiss adds more layers of information and insight even for the nerdiest of Madlib and Doom fans.  You can read the article HERE and an excerpt below.  On a side note, the article seems to imply that PBW's propensity for social media may have indefinitely delayed the release of Madvillainy 2.

When Kanye West sought Madlib beats for what eventually became My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, DOOM brokered the meeting, hoping for a cut of the potential windfall. For hours, the three of them sat in that Masonic Lodge, shrouded in smoke, piles of records, and the smell of pan dulce from the Mexican bakery downstairs. At some point, Kanye fell out of a rickety half-broken chair lying around the studio. Madlib and DOOM laughed, as villains do.

Soulection Radio #182 with Ta-Ku

I'm posting this for three reasons. 1. Soulection Radio really seems to have its finger on the pulse of the top shelf "beat" music, so I recommend listening if you're interested (like I am) in discovering all the flavas within this subgenre of music. 2. The Ta-Ku interview is very interesting in terms of shedding light on how all of these bedroom beatmakers have used to social media to get their music heard and propel music careers in some cases. 3. The show played Ruk N' Wiz's "A Journey Through Samples" mix as the bed of the interview and the mix is fire. So much so, I found myself listening to the mix far more so than the interview. The mix can be heard HERE.  Interview begins at the 1:24:25 mark.

This one is such an inspiring session from start to finish for so many reasons... hmm well it was the first time I did my show live from Rinse FM in London! It felt good to be back in the studio. We were fresh out of a sold out XOYO show from the night before w/ the announcement/debut of our latest signee @samgellaitry. Feeling overwhelmed.
Ta-ku and I hung out recently when he was in Los Angeles for a couple of days and were able to catch up on life, music, photography (shouts to Eric Coleman / Mochilla), eat tacos, sushi, chill with Esta, Carmack, Mike Gao and play music. I'll never forget this. Before we knew it Ta-ku did a 30 minute set and sat down with me to and talk about everything from his travels, latest business ventures, Artists Envy, Songs To Make Up To, his passion for Men's Grooming, Photography, and much more. Ta-ku is one of the realest and most down to earth people you'll ever meet, he's definitely family.
Enjoy and spread this to your friends and fam. Next week we return with a special set + Interview from Sam Gellaitry.

Winter Bluntz III - Mixed by DJ Sheep

Do I support DJ Sheep's attempt to monetize his mixes? ABSOLUTELY! Do I think he'll be successful in doing so? If I had to bet, I'd bet against it. Nonetheless, that doesn't mean he shouldn't try. To be blunt (pun intended), Sheep's mixes are freaking incredible and worthy of our $$$. All of his mixes are Highly Recommended.

## BULLETPROOF CRATES RECORDINGS PRESENT:

DJ SHEEP'S WINTER BLUNTZ: BLUNT 3
Recorded Live: 6th August 2014

It's the end of the Winter Bluntz Trilogy, Hoth style, takin' out AT-AT's. The victory lap on a Taun Taun, passin' you sucker ducks on land speeders… I just finished doing this mix, and I feel like I just entered the DMC for two hours straight, my brain is spent and I'm ready for that blunt.

My mind is erratically spontaneous and crazy right now; I dug super deep for the final mix of Winter; maybe even Bulletproof status. Hope you enjoy it. Here's what I remember playing:

Drum breaks off live 1970's concert cassettes, kids TV show stuff, libraries, a lot of Australian, Japanese, African, Czech, Polish, Thai, Chinese, Russian, Greek, French, WORLD stuff, a touch of latin, some stems, edits, a few raer acapellas, a live crooklyn dodgers j-pop blend, jazz, hip-hop jawns, soundtracks, b-boy breaks, a beat from the Bulletproof homie Matty Fresh, some 45s, private press stuff, some 90's wall of fame classics, soul, disco, reggae, console music, blaxploitation radio advertisements, drum breaks of all-sorts, and it goes on and on…

If you wish to contribute, please visit my MP3 store, the BLUNT DELIVERY SERVICE over at djsheep.bigcartel.com - there's a lot of options and if you throw some $ to the cause, I would really appreciate it right now… years of collecting records does not pay these damn bills! I'm down to work or trade records too, so please holla if you have any ideas - djsheep@gmail.com - CD's coming soon for those asking. I'm also selling half my record collection (about 6,000 records) on Discogs and eBay… more news on that too soon :)

Peace to Biz Markie and Grandwizard Theodore for the shoutouts. Extra special shout to Ego Trip (egotripland.com) & Unkut (unkut.com) for the consistent posts.

peace. dj$HEEP

Crate Diggers: Afrika Bambaataa's Records Inside the Cornell Hip Hop Collection

Afrika Bambaataa is credited to be one of the earliest influencers of hip hop culture. The iconic DJ/producer has been a part of the scene for more than three decades. In their Hip Hop Collection library, Cornell University has collected historical artifacts from the scene with hundreds of party flyers, vinyl records, press packets, magazines and more. In 2012, the pioneering Bambaataa was appointed as a three-year visiting scholar to the college, and with him came he thousands of records from his career that will soon be added to the three-story library. In the latest episode of Crate Diggers, Fuse talks to the legend and explores some of his rarest wax.

"This is the record collection that invented hip hop," Assistant Curator at the Cornell Hip Hop Collection, Ben Ortiz, says. "This is the place that people will want to go to get the clearest understanding of how this culture began. We are preserving this stuff not just for us, but for future generations."

And with that, of course, comes Bambaataa's forward-thinking, multi-genre selection of records that he's been carrying since the '70s.

"I knew something different was happening in the streets," the 57-year-old reflects, referring to his early days."I definitely knew I was doing something, bringing all these styles of music to the many different audiences I was playing for ... It was more about picking out the different sounds from what I was hearing on the radio stations and what I wanted to play for my audience and give them that different sound; take them on a musical journey."

Watch above to dig through Bambaataa's collection that includes classic soul records (James Brown and Dionne Warwick) to rare, out-of-print vinyls (including selections from the late-'70s New York punk band Alda Reserve or '70s soul/funk outfit 21st Century).

Ortiz adds, "You hear DJs say, 'He's the one who taught us how to rock a crowd. He's the one who taught us [that] you should play a variety of music.'" And soon enough, Bambaataa's handpicked variety will placed in this archive along priceless artifacts like Egyptian papyrus scrolls and a copy of the Emancipation Proclamation, signed by Abraham Lincoln.

Art of Digging: Gensu Dean

My recent discovery of Gensu Dean's impressive production catalog may have just inspired a new installment of the SP-1200 series.

The Grand Imperial, Gensu Dean, SP1200 producer, analog equipment junkie, and Mello Music producer, recently took a moment out of his NYC travels to talk about "The Art of Digging." A pure vinyl head, who abides by the Jedi code, Dean still covers labels, doesn't do e-digging, and explains why in this short video clip. It's this ethos, combined with hard knock production, that has garnered Gensu production credits and friendships with Large Professor, David Banner, Brand Nubian, Planet Asia, and even a co-sign from the King, DMC of Run DMC. Most recently Gensu Dean produced the entire album for Mississippi emcee 7evenThirty on a record titled "The Problem."

Kon & Supe Beat Tape (1996-1999)

TIME CAPSULE MATERIAL...A BOSTON COLLABO DONE WITH MY MAN "SUPE" ...SUPER SUPERB PRODUCER/ENGINEER/MIXER ( RESIDING IN PHILLY NOW )BACK IN 1996-1999. THIS IS THE ACTUAL BEAT TAPE CASSETTE RECORDING. DURING THE 90S WE DID 100'S OF TRACKS TOGETHER AND NOW WE ARE STARTING TO UNEARTH THEM.... LOOK OUT FOR A PROJECT REAL SOON!

The Whitewashing of James Brown

I normally don't agree with this type of viewpoint (you can see my twitter timeline for some of my comments in response to Questlove/Q-Tip's views on race and hip hop culture), but I'm 100% in support of the author's argument HERE.  I suppose much of my support comes from what I've similarly interpreted as the whitewashing of Muhammad Ali (perhaps better said, the pacification of Muhammad Ali) over the last 20 years or so.

DJ Craze Live at Do-Over (6/29/14)

Watching a video like this you realize that DVS was basically designed to allow deejays to do exactly what deejays like Craze were already doing with only vinyl. Yes, Craze is using DVS in this set. However, the difference (at least for me) is that this Craze set would have been mostly the same 10-15 years ago. Part 2 after the jump.

Winter Bluntz: Blunt 2 - Mixed by DJ Sheep

You can read the description below, but I can tell you all that this an incredible mix. Top shelf status if such a thing ever existed. Highly Recommended.

## BULLETPROOF CRATES RECORDINGS PRESENT

DJ SHEEP'S WINTER BLUNTZ: BLUNT TWO
Recorded: 31st July 2014

Hey everyone on the Internetz -- I've been so damn busy re-jigging the studio over the past month that I didn't have time to get on the turntables until yesterday… I hopped on them suckers, hit record and here are the fruits of that affair for your listening pleasure. All done in one take, no preparation, just a erratic journey into the mind of a beat obsessed, scratchaholic OCD record junkie with a super short attention span. A lot of ground is covered on this mix… a gang of samples, both used and unused, library records, soul, funk, disco, hip-hop, australian records, japanese stuff, drum breaks, b-boy breaks, bongo breaks, turntablist works, electronic stuff, some mega RAER acapella blends with funk loops on the fly… and a couple of fresh new beats from djHONDA and Matty Fresh…

I hope you all enjoy this series… I'm trying to take what I learned from that Soulman World Of Beats 2 mixtape back in the day that started me on this beat mission. Over 25 years of collecting records, it's time to drop some gems on the world and try carry on the "break mix" / "mixtape" tradition. I hope you enjoy. Contact details are on this Soundcloud page. If you wanna get a MP3, or drop me a donation to the cau$e, drop me a line, djsheep@gmail.com or visit djsheep.bigcartel.com. Peace. Stay High.

Okayplayer Presents: The Chuck D Birthday Mix by DJ Raydar Ellis

Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamp, but they do MC for Public Enemy. An excellent mix of lesser and better known PE tracks, celebrating a man who has managed to stay a rebel in an elegantly graceful way. Not easy to do.

Beat Junkies Launch New Website and Record Pool (Mini Review)

Earlier this weeks the Beat Junkies launched a new website which promises to include more music and video content from the likes of J. Rocc, Rhettmatic, Babu, Melo-D, Mr. Choc, and the rest of the world famous deejay crew.  The most interesting aspect of the relaunch is the digital record pool which can be accessed for $35/month (which includes unlimited downloads).  The record pool contains a variety of remixes, edits, acapellas (though I've yet to find those), and exclusives from the music libraries of Beat Junkies crew members.
