Pullin from the Stacks Ep. 11 - Mixed by DJ Ian Head

Another excellent episode of crackling gems by the illustrious crate digger, Ian Head.
We're back with a new episode! I'm going to slow down the weekly schedule and try and get something out every few weeks instead. Here's a few records I picked up while in Portland and Seattle last month. Lots of jazz with some funky folk mixed in.

Salamander Street Massacre - Mixed by DJ Sheep

While many of you were listening to ATCQ, De la, and Souls throughout your high school years, I wasn't nearly as enlightened. This mix pretty much captures my musical pallet circa 93-97.  The more bass, the better.  The more obscene and offensive the lyrics, the "realer" the music.  Enjoy.

AND NOW A WORD FROM OUR SPONSOR, J-ZONE…
It's been a decade since both my last installment of the Ign'ant mix tape series and my three-year column in HHC Magazine. After working hard to profile the most vile, rude, offensive rap music I could possibly procure, I decided to bury both endeavors and move on to other things. After all, I'd maxed out the IRS (Ign'ant Rating Scale) in every possible category: senseless violence, wanton misogyny, race-baiting, hare-trigger mayhem and total lack of respect for everything under the sun. At least that's what I thought - until I checked out DJ $heep's $alamander $treet Massacre. Well, now I can officially declare my career as ign'ant rap guru over. If nothing else, it's because a cut from my obscure, forgotten Gorilla Pimp$ showed up on a mix tape in 2014. And the said mix tape is dropping in possibly the softest, most (faux) politically correct climate the world has ever seen. That's proof there are sick fucks out there who deliver the word against all odds, and $heep, you are one of them. Salute. I bestow the crown unto you.

Stones Throw Podcast 90: Quaker Tape II by Katalyst

Good stuff right here. Don't sleep on the Quakers.

Quakers is a hip-hop collective boasting 30+ members and a core of three producers: Fuzzface, 7-Stu-7 and Katalyst. After their debut album on Stones Throw a couple years ago, Katalyst made a mix for Stones Throw podcast 72. Here's his second, Quaker Tape II, 40 minutes with everything from hip-hop, psychedelic soul to new wave. Whatever you call it, we call it "music."

Zealous Collector - DJ ADA

I first heard this mix in late 2014 and was impressed enough after my first listen to make a mental note to revisit the mix for the "best of" list at the end of the year. For whatever reason, this mix was negligently omitted from the list due to my lack of memory.  Well, better late than never,  Highly recommended mix of a diverse collection of funky music.  Enjoy.

Vinyl Porn Alert!

Here's an excellent interview of deejay/producer/vinyl collector Ollie Teeba, provided by the good folks at Dust & Grooves.  You can find all sorts of vinyl insight and cool pics HERE.  If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend copping Dust & Grooves' coffee table book of various vinyl collections, Dust & Grooves: Adventures in Record Collecting.

Down to Funk (Live All Vinyl Mix) - Mixed by DJ Patience

Just a good old fashion, all funk/soul, vinyl mix. Listen and enjoy.

Even the Sund Goes Down (Outkast Mix) - Mixed by Mathew David

It's early, but I think this is my favorite mix of 2015 so far. I've said it once, I'll say it again: if there's one mix I'd like to have back it would be my Outkast mix. In the meantime, I'll have to be content with listening to mixes like this one and being jealous of how other deejays reworked Outkast's catalog in such a Outkasty kind of way. Highly Recommended.

Three excellent sets to digest. Ras G gives you exactly what you'd come to expect from him. The Gaff's set is absolutely stellar, while few ears are better than Houseshoes.

Kicked off the new year with a jam packed episode featuring some ill vinyl selections by Sweeney Kovar, a live SP404 set from Ras G, a funky 3am set from The Gaff, and a nice closing set from Houseshoes.

Sounds Like Porridge (A Roc Marci Mix) - Mixed by Pipomixes

There have been several sources of inspiration that have really kept me checking for new music the last few years. Madlib's post Dilla (06) production, future beats producers like Ras G and Dibia$e, and the many quality releases from labels like ReDef Records, Mellow Music Group, and Street Corner Music.  All of the quality music from the aforementioned artists/labels (among a host of others) have fueled ideas for new mixes. Among the array of quality releases, nothing has tickled my fancy quite like the ascension of Roc Marciano. Roc Marci's music is the quintessential example of old becoming new. There's nothing new about stripped down, loop-based production sprinkled with grimy raps. However, the way in which Marciano does it and the timing in which it is being done, make this old tried and true combination very refreshing. Marcberg, Reloaded, Marci Becoup, and the Pimpire Strikes Back have burned a hole in my headphones.  As much I tried to resist doing this mix because I considered it low hanging fruit, I could only resist for so long.  The music is just too good and I like Roc's catalog too much to have not made this mix.

This mix was completed six months ago and has been sitting on the shelf collecting dust ever since. I held off on releasing the mix because I thought another Marciano album was going to drop during the fourth quarter of 2014 (as was done with his three previous albums during the last two years) and I wanted to time the mix's release with Roc's latest album. No such luck and I can't sit on this mix any longer because too much time has passed since I released my last mix.  So here you all go. Enjoy it because I'm not sure when the next mix is coming. Not to be confused, I'm always working on a new mix. Whether it's thinking of new concepts or themes, brainstorming songs and sequences, or the actual mixing of a mix; I'm always working on the next mix.  However, my process is getting slower and my time more limited. Please enjoy it until the next one because if the last few months have taught me anything it's that "next" is not always guaranteed.

James Brown Tribute Part 1 - Mixed by DJ Mell Starr

I believe this was recently released around Christmas to commemorate the anniversary of JB's passing. I've heard many James Brown mixes over the years and I have to say this is one of the better ones I've heard (out of many good JB mixes). In addition to the mixing being top notch, a lot of lesser played JB cuts were incorporated into the mix which was nice to hear for a change. In a unrelated note, a new Pipomixes mix will post tomorrow. Happy New Year all.
