Ras G Bonus Beats MegaMix - Mixed by Kutmah

I randomly popped in the Secondhand Sureshots DVD last night and remembered this classic mix by Kutmah. Anybody know if any of this older Ras G material is available anywhere (like to actually purchase)? Highly Recommended

DJ Four Color Zack (Thre3style Champ) at Turntable Lab

Don't get me wrong, I like what a lot of deejays can do nowadays with the incorporation of various controllers, gadgets, etc.. However, I think a lot of deejays are spending too much time away from the actual tables to the degree where I'm not sure they are actually using them. This little mini set by Thre3style champion, DJ Four Color Zack, strikes a nice balance between mastering gadgetry AND turntable mechanics.

Dilla Mix Blowout

I figure today is as good a time as any to post a bunch of Dilla mixes since February will be a rap in just a few days. Please don't be confused. The fact that I'm posting these mixes in a bunch is not meant to imply that these mixes are not of the highest quality. In fact there's at least a dozen more mixes in my inbox that will likely not get a post (though those are pretty damn good as well). You're going to find mixes from the likes of Pete Rock, DJ Finesse, and DJ Rhettmatic after the jump. Not exactly chump change if you ask me. I just didn't want to fill up the entire page with Dilla mixes and read the complaints. So here are the best of the rest.

Crate Diggers: Chief Xcel (of Blackalicious)

Much love to everybody who spend a good portion of their student loan money on record shopping they couldn't afford.

Chief Xcel, one half of the Bay Area rap group Blackalicious, owns over 20,000 records in four different storage spaces. Acquiring that much vinyl requires the relentlessness of a detective and the curiosity of an art curator, as well as the ability to criss-cross the globe like James Bond.

Anyone who has made that many purchases and trades is also likely to have an equal amount of amazing stories, and that is true for Chief Xcel, who rattles off a few of his best in this episode of Crate Diggers. He starts by telling an ominous tale about hunting records at a store owned by someone he called "The Nazi," and talks further about adding to his collection in places like Rotterdamn, Brazil, Paris and Oklahoma City.

"Every record has a story," Chief Xcel says, and it's never been truer than in this episode. But Chief Xcel also colors his own history, from his friendship with DJ Shadow to his first ever-record to which punk album is one of his favorites for drums.

Solid Steel Radio Show (2/7/14) - Mixed by Gaslamp Killer

Absolutely incredible mix right here. Early contender for mix of the year. Highly Recommended.

Solid Steel (7th February) In Hour 1 we welcome The Gaslamp Killer to start off the show. It's a mix of some of GLK's favourite current alternative groups specialising in the dark psychedelic side of rock and the harder edged beat music that he loves so much. Plus a couple of world psych classics in the middle, from fast to slow around we go, always a narrative journey with GLK.
DK continues with the beautiful collaboration between Debruit & Alsarah and onto the new Mount Kimbie remix for Kelis on Ninja Tune and the current single by Falty DL. Then it's a track from the Actress album Ghettoville and into the dub mix of classic 80's Boogie from Barbara Fowler, before ending with Cottam and Instra:mental from the last few years.

1989 Turntablism: DJ Miz & DJ Aladdin

Flash from the past here. Classic video

Beat Junkies: History of Turntablism

An older video (I'm going to guess from the late 90's/early 2000's) with Rhettmatic, Shortkut, and Babu explaining and demonstrating the evolution of different turntable techniques. Parts II & III after the jump.

The Roots Tribute: Live from the Bedroom 8 - Mr. Green

Damn, I didn't know Mr. Green got down like this on the tables. Check this link out for those of you who may scoff at the absence of turntables.
For this episode I decided to use nothing but vocals from Black Thought and Malik B of the Roots. It's kind of a mini tribute to one of the greatest rap groups of all time. I chose to use these vocals because I've always been a huge fan of the Roots and because I'm getting really excited about dropping the album "Unpredictable" with Malik B. Also because the Roots are debuting on the Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon!

If you watch to 2:00 minutes you will see that I invented a new
way to rock the (digital) turntables. Have you ever seen somebody pick
their digi turntables up and play them like a guitar before? Now you have.

Instrumentals:
Undefined (look out for Jem Cretes rocking over the beat)
Kings Beat (from the Freeway and Tek song)
June 2007 (from Green Future)
Unreleased Instrumental

Vocals:
"In The Ghetto (Wake Up!)" J Period feat. Black Thought, Rakim and John Legend
"Get Busy" The Roots
"You Don't See Us" The Roots
"Metal is Out' SNIPPET Malik B and Mr. Green feat. Benefit

Shout out to Pioneer/Serato for making the
DDJ- SR, a piece of equipment so dope
that I can pick it up and play it like a guitar.

Big Shout out to Dj Critical Hype for hooking up the Acapellas.

Huge shout out as always to the video master Sam Lipman-Stern on the cut. -Green

Pioneer DJM-900 Demo by J. Rocc

J.ROCC - Stones Throw Presents BROADJ Special... by puqis

This is about as good as it gets for those who really want to study the technical aspects of how J. Rocc executes his sublime mixes. The mix is an outstanding cross genre selection of music that has J. Rocc going all out on mixer efx (given it's a promo for Pioneer's DJM-900). You can study to your heart's content every knob turn and fader crossover, but I doubt anybody will be able to duplicate the end product. Highly Recommended

Acts II & IV

Somebody told me the other day that they've never seen The Godfather. Silly me just assumed everybody on the planet has seen both I and II hundreds of times like me. With that in mind, here are Acts II & IV just in case you've never listened to either. Act IV after the jump.

Sucker for Love Volume 3 - Mixed by Mike Who?

Here is a public service announcement. Avoid by all means spending your Valentine's Day being herded like cattle, getting bad service, and being over charged for some corny Valentine's Day special at some restaurant. Instead, spend your Hallmark holiday like the Mixes household; watching the ever so romantic season 2 of House of Cards (available Friday), followed by a recorded episode of last Sunday's True Detective. With this kind of romantic ambiance, there's no way Mrs. Mixes won't be craving for some lovin' by 10pm. Right around then the mood will be just right for this wonderful mix.  Feel free to ignore my advice, but you'll be sorry.

The 3rd and Final Volume in a series which has been way too much fun putting together. Large up to Acclaim for running the premiere.

MadDILLAIny - Mixed by DJ Skarface

I know exactly what you're thinking and I'll stop you right there. I wouldn't post the mix if I didn't think DJ Skarface brings something new to the table here. The mix is superb. The real mystery is how did he get/make all those Doom acapellas.

The King James Version Vol. 2 - Mixed by House Shoes

Listening for the first time as I type. Volume 1 gets constant play at the Mixes household. In fact, Volume 1 is Lil Mixes preferred soundscape as she throws her oatmeal to the floor. I see no reason for Volume 2 to disappoint. Enjoy.

Update: So far (15 minute mark) it's clear that House Shoes dug into the more obscure Dilla crates for this one. Highly Recommended.

Act 1 - J. Rocc

I posted Act III last week and mentioned that I was debating whether Act III or IV was J. Rocc's best. Somebody posted that Act I was the best of the crop in their opinion. I have to admit that I haven't really listened to Act I much since 2006. I stand by my Act III/IV claim, but damn Act I is smooth as silk. BTW, word on the tweet is that House Shoes is going to drop King James Vol. 2 Monday. I will post it as soon as it hits the net.

8 Years Later

Eight years ago today James "J. Dilla/Jay-Dee" Yancey passed away. Like many talented individuals before him, dying young catapulted Dilla's name, art, and image to cult-like status. The last eight years have seen a lucrative industry emerge in the name of celebrating Dilla's music, life, and legacy. The fandom has reached such proportions, that I even stop myself from listening to too much Dilla for fear of being a part of a "trend" I've come to be annoyed by. How do you like that, a connoisseur of Dilla production since his early work with Pharcyde and official fan since first hearing Slum Village in 1999; feeling guilty for listening to "too" much Dilla.

I've got a feeling I'm not the only one stopping himself from listening to too much Dilla. However, I suggest those of my ilk take a step back and consider the big picture for a moment. As annoying as it may be at times, the fandom that Dilla's music has generated since his death is overall a good thing for hip hop and music. I have 19 year old college kids coming into my office asking me about sampling techniques and where they can buy an MPC because of Dilla. Sure it's annoying that their music knowledge of Dilla's work often goes no deeper than Donuts, but everybody has to start somewhere. Most of the next generation of hip hop heads will learn about Tribe, De la, Slum Village, Madlib, Pharcyde, D'Angelo, The Roots, etc. through Dilla. These same heads "in progress" will learn about sampling, record diggin', chopping, etc.. because of their Dilla fandom. Due in large part to Dilla and the legacy that his young death combined with his extraordinary talent generated, the hip hop music that you and I fell in love with and still love to this day, will live on for one generation more. That is a very good thing. So the next time you find yourself getting annoyed by some new jack wearing a "Dilla Changed My Life" t-shirt, ask yourself; aren't there much worse things to have your life changed by?

SP Shit Volume 4 - Oslo SP Ensemble

I'm not 100% sure, but I think this is more of a beat tape than an actual mix. Whatever it is, it's some smooth, laid back, grimy SP beats/remixes that I think you will all enjoy. So listen and enjoy.  If you're yearning for more SP beats, you can always go HERE for the don dada of SP mixes.

Psychedelic Breaks & Nuggets - Mixed by Dexter

The title pretty much says it all other than how freaking good this mix is. Enjoy.

Dexter's "The Trip" is out now on gatefold LP this week! We celebrate the release with the limited mixtape "Psychedelic Breaks & Nuggets" which is out today on C60 Casette. 200 copies only. Rare tracks from the psychedelic years edited & mixed by Dexter from original vinyl pressings. Artwork by Gizem Winter.
Only available at the MPM Store www.mpmmailorder.com

For track list: go out and get yourself a tape!

Rhythm Roulette: Mr. Green

Very likely my favorite Rhythm Roulette episode to date. To be honest, I had to google Mr. Green to get his production credits (Jedi Mind Tricks and R.A. Rugged Man to name a few). Regardless, I really like his setup along with his workflow (similar to what I think I would do if I made beats).

Winter (mixtape) - Mixed by DJ Ian Head

I can't get enough of these Ian Head mixes.  They are so simple, but they are the essence of hip hop IMO.

Took me a second to get to this one. This winter has been a little hectic, but in a good way: the collision of work with school with travel to see family and friends. In-between, digging and stumbling between crates continues to be a constant. Besides my usual NYC adventures I was back in Portland for a couple weeks, and a quick day of almost getting caught by the polar vortex in Chicago - but still somehow managed to make it to the record store for an hour despite 2 feet of snow and freezing temperatures. This chaos the past couple months, combined with the ice-cold temperatures, has worked to create a bit of a bizarre tape, with more of a "rock" style edge. I tried to keep it eclectic as usual, and give a broad sampling of a few things I've dug up these last few weeks. All vinyl. No tracklisting, just holler if you need that science.
I'd also like to say RIP to Amiri Baraka and Pete Seeger. Both had a profound effect on the ways I view and listen to music and politics.
I hope everyone is staying warm.
- DJ Ian Head

Act III - J. Rocc

It goes without saying that this mix has been posted here before. However, I have long felt that Act 4 is J. Rocc's greatest mix, with Act 3 a close second. After listening to Act 3 several times over the weekend, I'm beginning to reconsider. Either way, 2 absolutely classic mixes. You be the judge (not that they need to be compared).

Step Brothers (Alchemist & Evidence) Interview (The Cut)

These The Cut interviews never disappoint. This episode has KB!Mean from The Cut stops by Alchemist's studio and does an interview about the new Album "Lord Steppington". This interview is raw, uncut, funny and filled with some insight on the interaction of the Step Brothers
