WikiBreaks - DJ JS-1 **Please Read Editorial**

I posted this mix late Monday afternoon in an effort to give you all little treat. When I initially posted the mix I did not read JS-1's thoughtful description of the mix. After reading the description of the mix I've decided that I'm going to do a little something different this week. I'm going to leave this mix and not post another mix for a few days to ensure that everybody hears and appreciates the mix. A quality mix is a piece of art and should be valued as such. There's a reason why all of the world's most respected deejays use two turntables and a mixer as their tools of trade. While your at it, you should all listen to the Ken Sport mix below because that is an incredible mix as well (along with many of the other mixes posted on this blog that I'm sure many of you have forgotten about and overlooked). This blog will not post a new mix until JS-1's Wikibreaks mix receives at least 20 comments. This blog receives thousands of unique visits a day and the fact that many of the mixes posted on this blog go without comment just isn't right. I suggest we all take a moment to reevaluate the art form that we all claim to love. If we're not going to buy these mixes, the least we can do is appreciate them.
Here's another mix for everyone to enjoy...

The "WikiBreaks" mix is a lil' over an hour of breaks from funk, disco, re-edits, and some hiphop tracks that are not the most popular. I made most of the mix using two turntables, and then added some scratches & phrases from movies, pop-culture, commercials, etc... As you download yet another free mixtape i give out, i do hope you realize and appreciate the value of a good mix. There is an over-abundance of wanna-be djays: posers, strippers, clowns, reality tv losers, athletes, d-list celebs, promoters, anyone with a laptop, and even the coat-check chick spins... With all these djays you would think there would be more incredible mixes to listen too, more than there was 15 years ago when there was less djays? Yet, there is not many today, but i have dozens of cassettes from the 90's with great mixes. Perhaps it's because even the djays capable of making great mixes, don't really do that anymore. There's very few. It takes more than just playing what people know and like, or playing some exclusive detox tracks that are HORRIBLE and no one gives a shit about anyway, or just scratching really fast, or just "mashing up" any two different songs, or having "catchy" artwork, or playing an electro song that sounds like its 98 minutes long, etc... It takes a whole lot, that apparently most djays lack, or are simply lazy and ONLY do dj for $ not for the love of what it means to be a DJ. So whenever any DJ puts together something that obviously took time and dedication, we should appreciate their effort to keep the true mixtape essence alive, although it's all downloads and digital 1 & 0's... I guess we can try to keep the quality on par while most fell off or missed the boat. "Tradition means that we need to end what began well and continue what is worth continuing..." Well, I'll continue to keep making really dope mixes with good music, over here...

WINNING!!!

I couldn't agree more. Some really realness.

I guess it's the perfect time to say - I really dig pipomixes a whole lot, it's given me some real gold, but posting a mix a day detracts from the experience for me. Of course I understand why, but I can't listen to that much music. I like quality, and it's not possible to post quality on a daily basis. I'd rather see less, but have the quality bar way high.

JS-1 has nailed this one hard.

I'm stoked pipo has made this stand this week. Long may it continue...

Props to Pipo for making the silent enthusiasts like myself come out and comment. Don't know what my music landscape would be w/o Pipomixes' great selections accompanying me while I "Q" Train my ass from Brooklyn to Manhattan. JS1 is consistently making quality mixes that are right up my alley at all times. Wouldn't have found his mixes if i t weren't for this site.

Much love to Pipo and JS-1 but why's he got to hate on the coat check girl? Can't working people DJ too? I'm a lurker so this probably isn't the way to start commenting but all this stuff about "weak DJs, weak mixes, etc." is a bit troubling. I mean why is it such a threat that more people are trying this? Certainly the point about celebrities and the other haves getting more is valid. As is the way the history of the culture is at times washed away with the deluge. But I can't help thinking that this purist, protectionist, unless you are already super skilled and established thing is conservative and counter-productive. I mean it would be fucked up if I were to say, "I'm a professional writer and this sentence, 'Yet, there is not many today, but i have dozens of cassettes from the 90's with great mixes.' is so bad the author really shouldn't even try to write another one." Now I'm not sure JS-1 (or Revolution, or any number of other DJs) are saying exactly this but the tone of these commentaries seems to carry this message with it. Maybe it is just the defensive, shitty bedroom DJ in me but I just don't see how the coat check girl giving her friends crappy (or great) mixtapes is taking money, or praise, out of any other DJ's pocket. Also, why strippers and coat check chicks? Would more women DJing be such a bad thing? This is surely too much to put on JS-1 but since the call to comment went out, his description is the one at hand (really, the Revolution post would have been as good or better venue). No doubt these are complicated issues and these are just some thoughts for the stew.

Dope mix on a dope mixtape site!

I generally agree with the argument that deejays like JS-1 and Revolution are a little to sensitive about the coat girl becoming a "DJ." However, keep in mind that their anger primarily comes from 2 sources.

1. They are trying to defend their livelihoods (which is something we all get sensitive about).

2. They are trying to ensure that deejaying gets the respect that it deserves as an artform. It's on this point that I tend to agree more with the likes of JS-1 and Revolution.

With all that said, the whole point of the post was not to revisit that conversation, but to encourage all of us to show a little more respect and appreciation for the artform that we all claim to love. I understand that the days of selling music or mixtapes is now prehistoric. However, I think it's really sad to think that we've now gotten to the point of not even appreciating the artistry that goes into producing a mixtape, or music in general.

We aint talking about the game, we talking about practice! Not the game... Practice! Anyway, respect to js1 for all the hard work and for making this for us
