Straight Funk Mix - Mixed by J. Rocc

Straight Funk & Soul Mix from a few 45s that I played while on tour with Peanut Butter Wolf in September.

Shout out to the folks in Chicago and Grand Rapids. Also have to shout out to the Soul Summit Crew and The Grand Rapids Soul Club.

Undercover - Mixed by J. Rocc

A new J. Rocc mix is always a very good thing.

Here is a mix of various cover versions.

I pulled a bunch of records for a stream with DJ Nu-Mark for his "Run For Cover" release. Before I put all of them away, I made this mix.

Enjoy

DJ Rhettmatic Live at Fat Beats Pop-Up

Live, high quality DJ sets on video are a rarity to find these days. I'm not interested in a 20 second clip; nor am I interested in a DJ live streaming for 3 hours. A nice 5-30 minute video of a DJ putting their all into a mix is what I'm after. Here you go. Enjoy.

J. Rocc's Final Adventures in Stereo Mix & AIS Eulogy

Last Friday marked the end of J. Rocc's Adventures in Stereo. I can't tell you how much inspiration I took from each episode of AIS. Sometimes it was the track selections. Sometimes it was J. Rocc's homemade blends. Sometimes it was the megamixes that J. Rocc was kind enough to create in 2015 and 2018. Sometimes it was the 5-10 minute mixes where you could hear a really inspired J. Rocc just showing off.

Saturday mornings are the highlight of my week. No work, me and Lil Mixes get to sleep-in without the rush and frenzy of a weekday morning; and the grind of life always seems more tolerable on a Saturday morning. For the last six years, the soundtrack of my Saturday mornings has always been listening to the replay of AIS from the night before (while the TV shows EPL or College Football). Saturday mornings will continue to be my weekly highlight. However, a very important ingredient will now be missing going forward.

I just hope that the decision to bring AIS to an end was J. Rocc's decision. It would be a real shame if anybody other than J. Rocc was behind this decision. Please join me in saying a little prayer for J. Rocc's next megamix coming sooner as opposed to later.

Side note: The above video captures J. Rocc creating an uptempo mix. I barely recognize any of the tracks because I don't normally gravitate toward uptempo music. When I first heard this mix I had now idea how much work J. Rocc was putting into the mix because it all sounded so seamless (often a curse of being such a skilled DJ). Seeing the video gave me a whole new perspective. Wow!

J. Rocc's Adventures In Stereo (Ep. 327) - Rhettmatic Electro Mega Mix

With quality mixes (especially megamixes) becoming harder to find than a snow leopard; I'm really appreciative of elite DJs like Rhettmatic taking the time to do one. Highly Recommended.

Flip Sessions Volume 6 : IMPEACH! (Side A) - Mixed by J. Rocc

No surprise that a project this well executed comes from House Shoes' SCM label. Highly Recommended.

In celebration of the exit of the most trash president in the history of the United States, SCM brings you 14 flips of possibly the most sampled song in hip hop. Masterfully mixed together by JRocc, one of the greatest dj's on Earth, this will be a document that will stand the test of time. Limited to 500 copies and a one time pressing, this is a must have.

Madlib BBC6 Guest Mix

Though the below description doesn't explicitly say so; the quality of the mix (combined with the below suggestion) certainly causes me to think J. Rocc is responsible for the mix. Madlib or J. Rocc; the mix is Highly Recommended.

Settle your ears into 30 minutes of pure bliss and welcome a true icon to the 6 Music decks, as producer, DJ and rapper, Madlib delivers an exclusive mix for Mary Anne Hobbs. The mix was recorded in collaboration with his long time friend, the original turntablist and Beat Junkies founder, J Rocc.

Dilla Fest 2021 with DJ Sets By DJ Rhettmatic and DJ Spinna

Above is the two-hour video of last Saturday's Dilla Fest. In addition to Rhettmatic's stellar set; you can watch all sorts of Dilla associates share various stories and tidbits about all things Dilla. Below, is an outstanding DJ Spinna Dilla mix that closed-out the fest.

Countdown to Vangarde - Mixed by J. Rocc

With their hotly anticipated collaborative album due out soon, Mr. Lif & Stu Bangas—collectively known as Vangarde—have linked with legendary turntablist J Rocc to put together an ill new mixtape, ‘Countdown to Vangarde.’ We’re treated to classic tracks taken from Lif’s discography, along with a couple leaks off ‘Vangarde.’ And you know it wouldn’t be a J Rocc mix without his original blends, and so we’re also treated to a pair of dope mash-ups that combine some of Lif’s acapellas over Stu’s previously released instrumentals. Give the mix a spin and mark your calendars for the Friday, Nov. 13th release of ‘Vangarde.’ The 11 track LP includes guest appearances by Murs, Akrobatik, Eternia, Bluprint, Reef the Lost Cauze, Blacastan and Puma Ptah, and will be available on vinyl as well as CD via Fat Beats. Pre-orders begin next Tuesday, Nov. 02!

J. Rocc Vinyl Factory Live Stream (#2)

One of the few positives of 2020 Pandemic is how much material J. Rocc has delivered us. Whether he's delivering a megamix, or a more subdued mix of rare joints; it's always funky.

KDAY - 93.5FM - THURSDAY NIGHT RADIO MIXES (2005) - Mixed by DJ Rhettmatic

Rhettmatic posted a series of his KDAY mixes (circa 2005) onto his bandcamp last month.  All of these mixes are absolute gems.

If anyone knew anything about my DJ career and The Beat Junkies, you would know that we used to dominate the airwaves on the Mixshows both on Power 106FM & 92.3 The Beat, the 2 Top Radio Stations in Los Angeles during the late 90's. Babu & myself would be the resident DJ's for the Soul Assassins Radio Show w/ B-Real & Eric Bobo of Cypress Hill (Melo-D was double duty with us & with Julio G) on Friday Nights. Melo-D was the main mixer for the 7'OClock Menu Mix with Julio G. While across town, up the dial, Mr. Choc & J.Rocc were at Power 106FM as part of the Fantastik 4our (w/ C-Minus & Truly Odd) with Friday Night Flavas.

Speaking of Julio G....what can I say about him. He's a big brother/mentor to us, a West Coast legend, and was the key component in giving most of the Junkies a career in Terrestrial Radio. His history & credentials are very deep: An OG 1580AM KDAY Mixmaster (Julio's a bad MF'er on the turntables & can still cut it up!), On-Air Personality on 92.3 The Beat, Co-Producer with OG 1580AM KDAY Mixmaster Dj Tony G for Mellow Man Ace's "Mentriosa" & Dj Pooh's "Woop Woop" feat Kam, Co-host of "Ruthless Radio Show" with the late great Eazy-E, the host of Westside Radio, the host/voice of "Los Santos Radio" on Grand Theft Auto V, & former Tour DJ for Cypress Hill. Like I said, what can I say about Julio....he helped put LA & the West Coast on the map!

Fast forward to the mid 2000's. Both Julio G & the Junkies already left the radio airwaves because the landscape for LA radio was changing & it was time for all of us to make bigger moves. Then around 2004, there was a buzz going around that a new radio station was about to appear on the scene with the call letters "KDAY", & people were excited. For the breakdown history of KDAY, of why it's such a big deal for Los Angeles Hip Hop History & how KDAY is very important to everyone that grew up in Los Angeles in the 80's & 90's, peep out our Beat Junkies podcast with Tony G: www.youtube.com/watch

In 2005, 93.5FM KDAY was born on the FM dial, people were excited. The only thing though, it's not the same as the KDAY we grew up in the 80's & it was mostly geared towards the nostalgia factor but with a updated vibes. It wasn't the same & for a lot of us that truly grew up with KDAY, you had to have someone that came from that era to really understand and at the same time, have their ears to the street. Thus, it was only right to have Julio G to be brought on board. It was a blessing that he brought Melo & myself with him to help KDAY be authentic. Basically, this was my last radio gig I ever before leaving the terrestrial radio airwaves for good. I was on 93.5FM - KDAY during the 2005 to early 2006. It wasn't the original 1580AM KDAY, but they were trying to mold the vibe to it. Julio was the On-Air personality; my fellow Beat Junkie, Melo-D was his main mixshow Dj from every Mon to Fri at 7pm. I would do Thursday nights at 7pm.

Here are a couple of my On-Air mixes that I would do live every Thursday nights, still using vinyl (the year before Serato came out), the Rane TTM-56, & the Pioneer 500EFX effect box. This is probably the last glimpse of dope mixing on LA radio before Radio fell off for good! Hope you enjoy these mixes & actually be surprised of the selection we got to play on the air, Beat Junkie Style! A BIG SHOUT OUT & THANK YOU ALWAYS to our big brother Julio G, all the 1580AM KDAY Mixmasters & all the OG LA DJs that influenced & paved the way for us.

Beat Junkies: Marathon Mix for Change

The Beat Junkies performed a 12-hour marathon mix on Sunday. Unfortunately, most DJs are no longer archiving their sets on Twitch to avoid being taken down. However, there are dozens of snippets that you can watch HERE to give you some inspiration.

J. Rocc's Adventures in Stereo (5/22/20)

Every episode of AIS is Highly Recommended listening.  However, this episode (from last Friday) is particularly good.  J. Rocc provides some exquisite blends throughout. The Busta Rhymes and Beastie Boys b-sides tributes are of special quality.

Breaks, Samples, and Goodies - Mixed by J. Rocc

J. Rocc delivers the long teased follow-up to his classic Syndromes mixes.
