Thank You Mix Series Vol.2: Street Corner Music - Mixed by: OMEGA:NYC
Superb mix of releases coming from House Shoes' label Street Corner Music. Highly Recommended.
Does anyone read this part.......? I write descriptions all the time but I am never certain anyone reads 'em. So here I go again!
Thank you to House Shoes for putting out crazy records! Nuff said!
I recorded this in August of 2016, shortly after posting the "Friday Night Minus the Beer" mix. My inspiration for the mix came from the countless hours I have spent listening the the street corner music catalog. Shoes gave us the Gift's Vol one to ten and I own each volume on vinyl. At the start of the year solo projects were being released on his label as well, EXT, iLLingsworth, Swarvy and Chanes(just to name a few). I immediately supported these records and cassettes set to drop throughout the year. Realizing what I owned and recognizing how deep my SCM catalog had grown, I decided to make a mix. This is not a "best of" mix because the label has at least 5 new releases that dropped after I mad this mix. The mix I crafted is simply my gift to anyone who listens to good music. The thank you mix series was something I wanted to create to document my gratitude to all of the records stores and labels that put out great music.
This mix was made using vinyl and cassette. The recordings are performed live and then edited to create a seamless, continuous blend of music. Thank you to iLLingsworth for posting a youtube video that helped to create the narration for the mix. Thank you to House Shoes for always putting dope music in my hands!
38 Speical (Part 1) - Mixed by Omega:NYC
Another Highly Recommended mix from Omega:NYC.
The last installment of the Chamber mixes - 38 Special: Part 1 and 2
For anyone not familiar with the series, this mix and the two others are dedicated to Pipomixes. That's my brother and other half of the Blending Nation crew. We have been crafting mixes since the early 2000's and have been building our individual styles throughout that timeframe. Pipo and I are 78ers and 2016 marks our 38th birthdays. Chamber 36 and 37 are posted to my TestPressPromoOnly page because those mixes represent styles that Pipo has mastered. 38 Special is raw and 100% OmegaNyc. As with most of my mixes, there is not a track list. My mixes tell a story. The theme for this mix is simple; shed tears. Crying tears of joy, sorrow or even pain is natural. Don't lie to yourself people we all cry. RZA sampled a track that sings, "after the laughter come tears". Apollo Brown dropped Thirty Eight in 2014 and that album also exhibits a similar theme. Both producers have beats on this project. Prodigy of Mobb Deep is hands down one of the best MC's spitting that real and it should not surprise you that he is one of our favorites. So is Roc Marci and KA. All three MC’s have tracks on this mix. But do not hesitate to recognize that Hip-Hop has layers and so does 38 Special. Too Short and Andre 3000 get reworked into the mix and I even throw a nod to Bad Boy Records in light of the 20th anniversary. As with all the mixes I craft, it was fun! Peace to everyone who listens to my mixes. I do this for the love and to keep the craft alive. To Pipo, enjoy the mix!
Robbery in Rio the Gunnar Bentz Edition - Mixed by Omega:NYC
Superb mini-mix inspired by Ryan Lochte's imagination. Highly Recommended.
“And then the guy pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, 'Get down,' and I put my hands up, I was like 'whatever.' He took our money, he took my wallet — he left my cell phone, he left my credentials.” - Ryan Locate
Bentz later tweeted: “We are all safe. Thank you for your love and support.”
The account of the robbery in Rio as told by Gunnar Bentz:
1. I was never a suspect in the case from the beginning (Brazilian law enforcement officials saw me only as a witness).
2. I never made a false statement to anyone at any time.
I also want to be forthright about the details of what transpired last Sunday. What follows is consistent with the account I gave to the Brazilian authorities when I was interviewed for the first and only time on Thursday in Rio de Janeiro:
After attending an event with several swimmers from different nations, I left in a taxicab along with U.S. swimmers Jack Conger, Jimmy Feigen and Ryan Lochte around 6 a.m. On the way back to the Olympic Village, we pulled into a convenience store to use the restroom. There was no restroom inside, so we foolishly relieved ourselves on the backside of the building behind some bushes. There was a locked door out back and I did not witness anyone breaking it open. I am unsure why, but while we were in that area, Ryan pulled to the ground a framed metal advertisement that was loosely anchored to the brick wall. I then suggested to everyone that we needed to leave the area and we returned to the taxi.
Two men, whom I believe to have been security guards, then instructed us to exit the vehicle. No guns were drawn during this exchange, but we did see a gun tucked into one of the guard’s waistband. As Jimmy and Jack were walking away from the vehicle, the first security guard held up a badge to me and drew his handgun. I yelled to them to come back toward us and they complied. Then the second guard drew his weapon and both guards pointed their guns at us and yelled at us to sit on a nearby sidewalk.
Again, I cannot speak to his actions, but Ryan stood up and began to yell at the guards. After Jack and I both tugged at him in an attempt to get him to sit back down, Ryan and the security guards had a heated verbal exchange, but no physical contact was made.
A man that I believe to be a customer approached us and offered to help as he spoke both English and Portuguese. Understandably, we were frightened and confused during this time. Through the interpreter, one of the guards said that we needed to pay them in order to leave. I gave them what I had in my wallet, which was a $20 bill, and Jimmy gave them 100 Reals, which is about $50 in total. They lowered the guns and I used hand gestures to ask if it was okay to leave and they said yes. We walked about a block down the street and hailed another taxi to return to the Village.
Thank You Mix Series (Record Surplus) - Mixed by Omega:NYC
Harlem born and raised, L.A. based Omega:NYC dedicates his latest mix to records bought at his favorite local spot, Record Surplus. One of the better mixes I've heard of late, and a strong contender for Mix of the Year. Highly Recommended.
This mix goes out to Record Surplus. RS has been my go to store on the Westside of Los Angeles for more than 10 years. Be it hip-hop, r & b, soul, jazz or rock - Surplus has it all and then some. This is not a best of mix but more of a reflection of how RS has been a part of my record buying experience as an adult. My taste in music has grown and been expanded by hours of digging' in the crates at RS. Peace everyone at RS that has put me up on new and old vinyl. My gratitude is sincere and I know that community is real because RS has shown me love for 10 years plus. Thank you Chris, Nobu, Shoes, Louis, Mel, Dom and especially Neil!
37th Chamber - Mixed by Omega:NYC
Just over a year ago, Omega:NYC released the 36th Chamber to celebrate his 36th birthday. The mix was one of my personal favorites of 2014 earning itself a spot on the illustrious "Best of..." list for 2014. After a year of begging, pleading, and downright nagging Omega:NYC for another edition of his Chamber series mix, the man who taught this blogger everything he knows about 2 turntables and a mixer, brings us the 37th Chamber. The mix is done in the style that is nearest and dearest to the heart of yours truly. All sorts of cuts, scratches, blends, multitracks, random selections, and just all around funkiness. Highly Recommended.
36th Chamber - Mixed by DJ Omega:NYC
First off, this is not a Wu-Tang mix. A certain blogger you all may know recently turned 36 and his deejay friend crafted this superb mix to celebrate. The mix is entirely instrumental (current and older beats) seamlessly mixed together in a fashion eerily reminiscent of the above mentioned blogger. The mix has both a very "warm" (probably because it was recorded using all vinyl records) and random feel to it. Highly Recommended.
Wordplay (Live) - Mixed by DJ Omega:NYC
If you enjoy this blog (which I assume all of you do) and enjoy my mixes (which I assume many of you do), then you have the author of this mix to thank. The fact that mixing music and diggin' for records has evolved from something that I enjoy to a part of who and what I am, is largely due to Omega:NYC. Omega was the first skilled deejay that I was ever able to see cut up the tables live. Before youtube videos and VHS tutorials, I had my memory of watching Omega mix on my turntable to help me visualize how deejaying actually "looked" like. I think this mix is a pretty good representation of how skillful Omega:NYC actually is behind the wheels. The theme of the mix is a play on words and phrases reused and sampled throughout the rap lexicon. The mix was recorded on all vinyl and live. As a result, there are 1-2 spots that could use a Protools tweak here or there. But mixes were never intended to be perfect. As has been discussed on this blog before, it is the imperfections that ultimately give mixes the intangible quality that cause them to be memorable. The description of the mix is below. Highly Recommended.
Peace World. Hip Hip creation by OMEGANYC. Blending Nation is the crew. Recorded live and edited for your listening enjoyment. Peace to the Emcees that write rhymes that inspire other MC's, DJ's and Beatmakers - you know who you are. This is not a polished over produced mix, just some more of that raw mixing and New York City mixtape grime. WordPlayLive!!! dedicated to Afrika Bambaataa
Some New York City Rap Part 2 - Mixed by Omega:NYC
The title says it all. Expect to hear some NYC joints you know, some you forgot even existed, and others you slept on. As with all Omega:NYC mixes, you'll get nothing but top quality mixing here with seamless blends and clean cuts. Enjoy.
Down with the Kings - Mixed by Omega:NYC
Thank you to all of you who have showed love for the Bootlegs & B-sides mix. Here is a mix brought to you by the man who taught me everything I know on the tables. Description of the mix below. Highly Recommended.
Malik (Arabic: ملك) is an Arabic word meaning "King"
Malik Isaac Taylor better known by his stage name Phife Dawg and Malik Abdul Basit aka Malik B not only have name in common but also a struggle. These two MC's are often overshadowed by their counterparts in the groups that blew them up! This mix highlights the rhyme styles of these two artist and blends the classic tracks we have enjoyed from A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots.
MC is My Ambition - Mixed by Omega:NYC
In case you don't know the back story: many years ago, before there was youtube and the proliferation of mix blogs, there was a young deejay who owned a crappy set of Gemini turntables and crappier Gemini mixer. After months and months of practice, this aspiring deejay became increasingly frustrated with his lack of improvement and was frustrated to the point of wanting to quit his musical pursuit. At the same time, a Harlem deejay who was recently relocated to Los Angeles (without his turntables and record collection) went to a Slum Village album release show. While waiting in line for the concert, this Harlem transplant was asked to take his backpack to the car by club security. This Harlem deejay then asked the anonymous guy standing behind him (both men, alone) to hold his spot in line. When the Harlem deejay thanked the anonymous individual behind him for holding his spot, a friendship was born.Desperate to get on some turntables, the Harlem deejay (better known as Omega:NYC) made his way over to the frustrated deejay's home (aka Pipomixes) a few days later to mess around on his crappy Gemini turntables. While watching his new friend blend beats, rock doubles, and scratch "whoo-ha" like nobody's business, the frustrated deejay was in complete awe of what he was witnessing. Keep in mind, this was before youtube and all the video tutorials that are widely available today. Actually seeing someone properly "get down" on my turntables made all the difference in the world. Not only did it serve to inspire me, but it gave me a visual example of something to mimic and build from. Without that visual example I am sure I would have quit my pursuit of being a deejay similar to the way I gave up on the trumpet back in 4th grade. What a shame that would have been, being a deejay is a big part of who I am. It is has allowed me to develop a passion for music and a general appreciation for art that I don't think I would have if not for my love of mixing records. So if you enjoy this blog, my mixes, or both, you have Omega:NYC to thank.
Live from 148th St. - Mixed by Omega:NYC
** Link has been updated. Sorry about that. **So far, this is my favorite mix of 2010. Omega's description of the mix below.
Originally titled Live from Harlem, I tried to pick up where Riz finished on Live from Brooklyn. The mix actually goes in a different direction so I called it live from 148th instead.
All the tracks are well known and the run time is about 30 minutes. Expect quick transitions and blends.

Folgers Blends - Mixed by Pipomixes & Omega:NYC
Several months back, my man Omega:NYC copped Taster's Choice 4 and sent a copy of this very hard to find mix my way. I've always been a fan of the Taster's Choice series, but I especially liked volume 4 because it focused on classic hip hop tracks that aren't your run of the mill cuts that you hear on every golden era mix. So in the spirit of Taster's Choice 4, we decided to pick-up where J.Rocc left-off with our own mix of classics that many of us forgot even existed. This isn't a "best of" the golden era mix because many of the songs on the mix aren't from the golden era. Instead, it is more of a "best of" joints that you slept-on or forgot about mix. As many of you are aware, the mix was initially titled Taster's Choice 4.5. But, as many of you also know, that title didn't go over very well. So, the title was appropriately changed to Folgers Blends. As with all of my mixes, a lot of time and thought went into crafting this effort. Please enjoy. Omega's explanation of the mix is below."This mix is for true heads that like hip hop and for all of those who miss that boom bap. The last track means the most to me because black baseball is just like hip hop. the greatest ones to ever do this seldom have their story told... peace to J-Rocc"

Adriana Evans Mixed, Remixed, & Rediscovered - Mixed by Omega:NYC
My partner in deejay crime hits us off with another dope mix of an album most of us (myself included) slept on. Below is the description of the mix."Before Slum Village dropped their signature sound on the LP Fantastic Vol2 (2000), their was a young hip hop artist by the name of Dred Scott reshaping the sound of hip hop music, then unknown and not yet popularized as of 1994. A few of us may remember a song he did called "Check the Vibe." This track featured Adriana Evans, a soulful young singer from San Fran who relocated to LA to pursue a career in music. In 1997 she partnered with Dred Scott and the result was her self titled debut album. The album's production is thanks to Dred Scott. If anybody out there missed this album here is a chance to rediscover a classic!"
