Live from Toronto Mixette - Knxwledge

I have to admit that I'm fairly ignorant to a lot of the dub step stuff. I know about Flying Lotus, GLK, Ras G, and the rest, but I'm certainly no expert. With that said, can anybody tell me whether a mix like this one is done with turntables? Or, is this mix the product of some super scientifical mastery of a SP-303/404? Just curious. Either way, the mix is money.

This is definitely not dubstep. I would classify this as broken beat, downtempo, or hip hop. The difference is that dubstep is usually programmed note-for-note using synths for most of the melodic stuff, and it avoids hip hop style breakbeats, and the bass often dominates and uses non-traditional filtering. You will definitely not hear Shuggie Otis samples in a dubstep mix.

Definitely no turntables used here. He probably used Ableton. Programs like Traktor are now capable of being integrated with Ableton, and there are a lot of ways to spin both mixed and unmixed tracks. But actually there are guys who get way more intricate with their non-turntable mixes. I think the reason why this mix sounds so crazy is primarily the selections, which are definitely unconventional.

But you're right that this mix is definitely reminiscent of FlyLo, GLK, Ras G, etc. He's down with all those guys.

Thanks for the explanation E. What I'd like to hear is a whole mix with blends like the first blend where he brought in SV's "Hold Tight".

RLFM,

I guess the download limit expired. He is another download link. Before you get too excited, the link won't be good until 6/21.

I was able to download that mustache mix from Soundcloud. That is definitely dubstep. It's a bit heavy on the terror-style for my taste. To each, his own. Here's a recent Mala mix that is a bit more mellow. The genre does have a bit of range.
