The cornerstone of this blog's success is that one day you may hear a BeatJunkie mix and the next day you may hear a mix from an unknown DJ. Regardless of the dj's notoriety, the mix quality is the same. As a result, the mix submissions from many of you are integral to the blog. I just want to let everybody know that I'm getting all your submissions and doing my best to listen to them and post them in a timely manner. I spend most of my evenings with my iPhone headphones on listening to mixes while praying that my daughter stays asleep. As a result, your mixes are much more likely to be heard if they are uploaded via soundcloud (I love their app). I post all dope mixes I hear, though I don't hear all mixes. Don't be afraid to email me twice (3 times may be pushing it though) because it is not uncommon for mixes to get buried in my inbox. I know how badly djs want and need an audience. I know that this blog is a great outlet for many of you. Stay patient, keep at it, and have faith that game will ultimately recognize game.
Peace,
Pipomixes
Miami Boogie Gems - Mixed by Induce
You have to have a certain palate for Miami music to enjoy this mix. Description below.
Miami producer-cum-singer Induce has always been drawn to the sounds of soul and R&B. Stories of him as a five-year-old singing (loudly) Marvin Gaye’s “Sexual Healing” in his local department store—his mother half-amused, half-horrified in tow—trace his interests back to the likes of Motown, and soon enough, Michael Jackson. As the ’90s slid on, Induce later became hooked on new jack swing, Jodeci, and Boyz II Men, still traveling along this same path and expanding it into a different era.
While it’s only been in the last few years that he’s started incorporating his own vocals into songs in order to create his own take on his first love, Induce’s single “Pretty,” a boogie groove with obvious nods to Prince, taps into his years of listening experience and gets it right.
In celebration of Issue 50, Induce pays homage to his hometown via a mix for Wax Poetics comprised of Miami boogie gems.

Afrika Bambaataa - What's in My Bag
Though entertaining, these interviews rarely reveal anything all that surprising. You'll see Questlove with some Dilla cds or some well known producer buying a James Brown LP for the 50th time. But Babaataa's bag was instructional to say the least (at least for me).
Oddisee Interview and Studio Tour
Oddisee is far and away one of my favorite new producers in which I'm always checking for his new releases. This interview gives you a look into Oddisee's home (roommates and all), home studio, etc... All sorts of goodies here. Enjoy.
Get Angry - Mixed by Rich Medina
Get Angry is a collaboration between DJ Rich Medina, and painter Tatyana Fazlalizadeh. Inspired by the fervor of protest that amounted in 2011, Tatyana created a series of paintings to illustrate the various movements - from Tahrir Sq to Wall St, from London to Troy Davis, from Slutwalk to the demand for gay marriage rights - while Rich Medina created a mix of songs that represent the spirit of and energy of revolution.
A Jazz Mix - Mixed by DJ Teddy King
Music takes center stage on this mix right here. Expect all sorts of funky jazz. You may recognize some joints, others you may not. Enjoy.
Extra Large Mega Mix - Mixed Mike 2600
32 minutes of beats, breaks, original blends, rappin' and handclappin' all rearranged inna cut & paste fashaaaaan. Featuring bits and pieces from Jazzy Jay, Incredible Bongo Band, Ultramagnetic MCs, Kraftwerk, Beastie Boys, Spoonie Gee, Breakestra, Rare Earth, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Tuff Crew, and so much more.
Wax Poetics Prince Mix - Mixed by Dam Funk
A Prince mix to promote my favorite magazine that never seems to arrive in my mailbox when it should.
Will Sessions - Mix Takes: Take 1&2
Somebody needs to tell the Breakestra that Will Sessions is biting their steez and is claiming it as their own. I'm not complaining, I'm just saying. Hell, I wish every band on the planet would do this so that I never have to watch t.v. again. If you watch these two mix videos and don't change your shorts afterwords, you just ain't feelin' the music. Description below. Part 2 after the jump.
Will Sessions impressed many with the meticulous craftsmanship of their studio re-workings of the classic tracks for "The Elmatic Instrumentals." With their new two-part video "Mix Takes," the five-piece band is taking a similar approach in recreating some of their favorite songs--only this time it was all recorded and filmed live in real time.
RBMA Featuring Maseo of De la Soul
I've never met the dude, but Maseo has always given me the impression that he's a hip hop head's hip hop head. Maseo talks about how Kool Keith and Ultra Magnetic inspired De La's steez, the impact of 3 Feet High and Rising on the "business" of sampling, and Dilla. Listening to Ali Shaheed and Maseo discuss how much those sampling lawsuits financially hurt them really highlights how all the sampling laws really crippled many of our favorite producers from the 90's era.
RBMA Featuring Ali Shaheed
Lecture: Ali Shaheed Muhammad (Los Angeles 2012) from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo.
Thoughtful interview with Ali Shaheed discussing the early days of Tribe, changing up his production style, how sampling has hurt the amount of money he takes home in royalties, and Dilla.
Down with the King - Mixed by DJ Green Giant
This mix falls under the category of "why didn't I think of this first." Description below. Highly Recommonded.
Our friends at Gasface in France are currently working on a short film about famed composer/producer Galt MacDermot entitled Lookin4Galt. While “beat-heads” or “crate diggas” as we used to call ‘em may well be familiar with his work and its relation to hip-hop, Gas Face along with DJ Greengiant explicitly re-connect the dots with Down With the King – an excellent mix of sample source tracks, classic hip-hop tracks, and interludes from the film. Special appearances by Pete Rock, El Da Sensei of the Artifacts, Juju of the Beatnuts, Jadakiss and others.
Black Fist Friday Hot 97 Mix - Mixed by DJ Premier
As a tribute to Black History Month, HOT 97′s Mr. Cee has been hosting “Black Fist Fridays” every week in February. This past Friday, DJ Premier was the guest of honor. He delivered a signature set of classic and/or forgotten hip-hop and soul joints; everything from Jungle Brothers ”The Promo” to Jeru the Damaja‘s “The Frustrated Ni**a” to a few Sly Stone joints and even U.T.F.O.‘s “Ya Cold Wanna Be With Me.” Long live the radio mix!!!!
DJ Muro Live at Do-Over (Japan)
Did my monthly random youtube search of "crate diggin'" and look who came up, the great DJ Muro. Enjoy.
J. Rocc Live At Do-Over (New Zealand)
I should have posted this yesterday in the spirit of President's day, but it's never too late to show some love to the Funky President. Part II & III after the jump.
Hudson's House Breaks - Mixed by DJ Hudson
I'm not the biggest fan of House music, but Hudson did the breaks mix proper. Highly Recommended.
Thoughts on Dilla Fandom
The below comment on the recently posted Questlove Dilla tribute mix provoked the following thought from yours truly.

Is it just me or is the whole Dilla thing played out?? I thought it was played out almost instantly.. I'm not trying to hate on him, but it seems like everyone and their mother tried to claim some type of allegiance to him as a way to get props or something.. I'll be honest,, I didn't even know the name before he died.. I was like "oh he produced Runnin and Drop?".. Then it was "Dilla changed my life" and every suburban kid with an mpc1000 is influenced by Dillas message, lol... His shits cool, but damn.. Just seems like a fad, which is sad...
Pipo's Thoughts:
Yes and no. First, I'm not sure how old you are, but if u didn't know of dilla before he died u were either sleeping heavily, or u weren't reading album credits. To your larger point, the dilla fandom does seem a little out of control and like it has become an industry on to itself. There are certainly some out there that have made careers for themselves off of dillas name. However, I do think a lot of the dilla love is coming from a positive place. Most of it comes from an inner-circle who want to make sure his legacy is recognized. Dilla wasn't known like a biggie or 2pac, but his impact on music was arguably greater than those 2 emcees. His crew just wants to make sure the world remembers that. For better or worse, they've done an excellent job at that. As annoying of a trend as it may be at times, I consider having an 18 year old student asking me about dilla to be a positive thing. Just think of how much great music dillas legacy exposes them to (tribe, common, roots, madlib, pharcyde, sv, busta, dangelo, etc..)
So Much Soul Anniversary Mix (Part 2) - Mixed by Shorkut & Vinroc
Crazy, part 1 has been played on mixcrate over 1200 times, and part 2 has barely 200 plays. Sheep.

So Much Soul 10 Year Anniversary Mix (Part1) - Mixed by Shortkut & Vinroc
Wow! A lot of heavy hitters have been releasing mixes this week. Sleep on this mix and you'll be the cousin of death.
This mix is PART 1 of 2 to commemorate the So Much Soul mix series 10 Year Anniversary.
This download is a huge THANK YOU to all of you who've supported Vinroc & myself. It was 10 years ago when Vin approached me about doin something different from all the Hip Hop and scratch mixes we're known for.
Making So Much Soul opened my mind to the genius in Soul music, and made me want to make mixes of other genres as you can see in the list of mixes i've put up on Mixcrate.
So again, Thank you for all your support and to those of you downloading this after attending our anniversary event at SOM Bar in San Francisco.
As the great Don Cornelius would say, "LOVE, PEACE & SOULLLLL

WhatUpDo Volume 2 - Mixed by DJ Rhettmatic
Man, good thing I checked my twitter timeline today. Otherwise, I might have slept on this mix (literally). Rhett's description below.
As I type this, it's 6:55am & I am running on fumes....LOL!
I know today is Valentine's Day, so Happy Valentine's Day to all the lovers around the world. Me personally, I don't really like to celebrate Valentine's Day…..i tend to have some bad memories due to Cupid's sadistic jokes on me (I usually like to choke Cupid out like a MMA fighter...LOL!) So instead, i celebrate Dilla Month during the month of February. My good friend, James Yancey, better known to the world as J Dilla, was an Aquarius; born on Feb 7, 1974, but ironically passed away on February 10, 2006, due to complications from Lupus. He passed away 3 days after his birthday when he released his final album "Donuts"…….Even though Dilla was from & repped Detroit to the fullest, he also called Los Angeles his home where he was really appreciated out here. And as for his request, Dilla asked to buried in LA. Dilla was buried in the hills of Glendale, Ca; which ironically on Valentine's Day, on a beautiful sunny day, with two heart shaped clouds that was made by sky writers.
Anyways, here's a new installment of the "Whutupdoe" Mix Volume 2……i made this late last night into the early morning, just for all you Dilla heads & music lovers alike. You'll hear some familiar beats/songs, as well as some Dilla treats that you might have or have not heard. From soulful type beats to club bangers….and if you know Dilla, you would know that he got a sense of humor as well as a fetish for the Female's Glutius Maximus…..Personally, i still think my fellow Beat Junnkie & brother, the Funky President J.Rocc, can make a better Dilla mix than me & anyone out there, with a exception of Houseshoes & others. But i was inspired to make this…..I try to go for a longer mix but i was getting sleepy….Ha! Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy the mix…this one is for you….and this one is for Dilla!
Now it's time for me to go to bed....LOL! Salute!

Backrub Volume 3 - Mixed by DJ Zimmie
I apologize for the less than stellar post earlier. Please understand that I have a 3 month old at home and sleep is not something that I enjoy in abundance. It's been a rough few days and I got lazy in posting a mix that I did not screen before posting. I know all of you come to the site because you trust my selection of mixes. I apologizing for compromising the quality of mixes that are normally associated with this site. Hey, even Jordan missed. I think you will all find Zimmie's Valentine's Day mix a much more palatable choice.
Dilla Tribute Live on Hot 97 - Mixed by Questlove
I know, I know, not another Dilla mix. I wouldn't waste your time if it wasn't for the fact that Questo really hits his stride on the track selection right around the 9 minute mark. From that point forward, you can really tell that Questlove is on some serious stan'ish when it comes to the late, great, Dilla. Never forget, if not for the famous Questlove seal of approval, none of us would have run out to buy SV's first 2 LP's when they were originally released. In fact, we probably wouldn't have even known of Slum Village's existence if not for their unpaid publicist/hype-man Questlove.
Pass the Crate Mixtape - X-Ecutioners & Da BeatMinerz
Da Beatminerz and the X-Ecutioners–will be joining forces this Sunday February 12th for a live event at NYC’s Highline Ballroom. In order to commemorate this historic meeting of the mines, they have put together this unique mixtape cut together out of six short sets from DJ Precision, Total Eclipse, DJ Esquire, Boogie Blind, Evil Dee and Rob Swift. Mixes after the jump.
Series 25 Volume 1 - Mixed by DJ Revolution
I just feel wrong trying to sell any of you on a Revolution mix. You can read the description below. Sleep on this mix at your own risk.
This year I'm celebrating 25 years of professional DJing, I've decided to put together a mix every month this year featuring one or two of my favorite cuts from each year in order leading up to 2012. The first one is late....but i've been busy. I often find myself questioning why I'm still wasting time doing this shit, but when i go back and play some of these tracks it reminds me. I performed this mix live on B-Real's "meditation" show (Breal.TV) December 30th 2011 as my last set of the year.

Dilla on Giles Peterson's World Wide Radio (2/15/01)
Dilla leftovers trump a turkey sandwich on Black Friday by a mile. Listen to this legendary interview w/ Jay Dee on World Wide Radio dating back to Feb 2001. Dilla speaks on the making of the seminal Welcome 2 Detroit, his production work w/ Pharcyde, Common, Tip and other stories... a must listen.
Waajeed's 10 Favorite Dilla Sample Flips
Some leftovers from Dilla Day. Below description taken from Egotripland. Article can be read HERE.
Many of us may claim kinship with the music of the late, great J Dilla, a/k/a Jay Dee, but far fewer can claim to have been down with the man himself. Waajeed is one of those special few. A high school pal of Jay Dee’s back in Detroit, and an early member of Slum Village (back when the crew was rolling under the name Ssenepod, i.e. “dopeness” spelled backwards), Jeedo got his start in production when he bought Dilla’s old MPC and taught himself the art of beat-making. His tracks have since graced the efforts of Slum, Invincible, Tiombe Lockhart, and his own band with Saadiq, Platinum Pied Pipers (whose 2005 debut Triple P remains one of the great nu-soul/hip-hop efforts of the aughts). Waajeed’s latest endeavors include his Electric Street Orchestra project – still incubating and featuring collabs with what sounds like a who’s who of underground music luminaries across genres – as well as a documentary film on the life of J Dilla. His newly relaunched site, bling47.com, is the web manifestation of his Bling 47 creative organization (which has included a label and management team), and features an excellent ongoing video series entitled “Bling 47 Breaks” dedicated to sample spotting within the Dilla ouevre. On this, what would have been J Dilla’s 38th birthday, who better to present a special commemorative list of his 10 favorite Dilla sample flips than his friend and colleague, Waajeed. J Dilla, RIP.
Dilla Mix #923
If I remember correctly, I was Dilla mix #923 at the time when I released this mix back in February of 2008. I feel pretty cool about releasing my mix before the Dilla mix craze got into the thousands, let alone millions. In any event, give it a listen (if you haven't already) if you feel my mixes and you feel Dilla.
Dilla Day Post! Top 3 Dilla Tribute Mixes
My other two favorite Dilla mixes (aside from the J. Rocc Thank You set) after the jump.
Live on Frozen Files (2/1/12) - Mixed by DJ Soul
This is an absolutely incredible mix. Without a doubt, one of the best executed live, break mixes I've had the pleasure of hearing. I've always had much respect for Soul, but my respect for Soul's skills on the tables has increased immeasurably after hearing this gem of a mix. Highly Recommended
DJ Revolution Interviews Grand Wizard Theodore
Grand Wizzard Theodore Part 1 from The Cut on Vimeo.
The man who invented the "scratch" discusses the history of deejaying, the importance of deejays knowing their history, missed financial opportunities, the size of his record collection (588 crates), crate diggin', and how he stays relevant in 2012. Part II after the jump.
Stretch & Bobbito Interview/Lecture
Lecture: Stretch and Bobbito (San Francisco, 2012) from Red Bull Music Academy on Vimeo.
Highly recommended hour-and-a-half interview/lecture that dives into the greatest hip hop radio show of all time. Even for you long-time fans, you'll get every detail from the nervous early days when, as Stretch puts it, “at least 15 people were listening,” the classic freestyles (Big L with Jay-Z; Nas) and world premiere appearances (Wu-Tang; B.I.G.), the 4AM “Krunchtime” snap sessions – even the time a desperate listener called in seeking legal counsel from Bob after allegedly bucking someone down. Also discussed: why the show eventually ran its course (and episodes of playing records the other person wouldn’t like to piss him off), moving on from hip-hop, and how this particular broadcast with all its quirks and mystique will forever represent a classic New York City sensibility.
Down with the Kings - Mixed by Omega:NYC
Thank you to all of you who have showed love for the Bootlegs & B-sides mix. Here is a mix brought to you by the man who taught me everything I know on the tables. Description of the mix below. Highly Recommended.
Malik (Arabic: ملك) is an Arabic word meaning "King"
Malik Isaac Taylor better known by his stage name Phife Dawg and Malik Abdul Basit aka Malik B not only have name in common but also a struggle. These two MC's are often overshadowed by their counterparts in the groups that blew them up! This mix highlights the rhyme styles of these two artist and blends the classic tracks we have enjoyed from A Tribe Called Quest and The Roots.
NY State of Mind - Mixed by Scott Melker & DJ JayCeeOh
Excellent mix of music that oozes New York. Expect high quality blends and remixes here. Enjoy
