Must Read! John Doe Interview
This is an absolutely excellent interview of DJ John Doe of the 1200 Hobos. The interview covers topics ranging from his process of creating a mixtape, recording a mix without any computer software, finding time to mix with a wife and kid, and being a top notch deejay while still keeping his "day" job. Very inspiring. You can read the interview HERE.
Interview with Mark Katz, author of "Groove Music"
Pipomixes' nominee for top mix of 2012, DJ Ada provides an insightful interview with the author of Groove Music: The Art and Culture of the Hip Hop DJ, Mark Katz. Ada's description of the interview below.
A few months ago I heard author/professor Mark Katz interviewed on Billy Jam's "Put the Needle On The Record" Radio show. I'd heard about Groove Music and had been meaning to read it, but it wasn't until after hearing Mark speak with Billy Jam (Hip Hop Slam) that I immediately ordered the book and proceeded to devour every page. I like to read and am a Hip Hop DJ myself, so there was no excuse not to read this. I'd read other books that touch on turntablism (notables I recommend: Last Night a DJ Saved My Life, Can't Stop Won't Stop, & Making Beats: The Art of Sample-Based Hip Hop), but this is the first book I'd ever seen to focus exclusively on the topic of Hip Hop DJing.
Mark does an excellent job breaking down the history and culture of Hip Hop DJs, often going straight to the source and letting the pioneers themselves share their stories. He builds on what those other books I mentioned started, but takes it to levels never before seen in print (for example, going deep into the famous "ISP vs. X-Men" battle from 1996). Mark writes with a scholarly flare that reflects his academic background, which makes the book even more engaging because he's able to draw some really interesting connections and conclusions. He also writes with a passion that's contagious and treats the subject matter with the utmost respect. Needless to say, it's become my new favorite book and I can't thank him enough for writing it.
Mark was kind enough to answer some questions after I reached out to him. Check it out HERE.
Brasilintime
Here is the wonderfully done Brasilintime documentary for those of you who haven't seen it yet. Brasilintime is a filmic map that connects the world of Rio de Janeiro of the late teens to the South Bronx of the early 70s. The roads from Samba through Bossa Nova to Hip Hop are a complex web of musical whispers and echoes. Part 2 after the jump.
Twelve 12's Live Mix (Beatnuts Special) - DJ Superix
Props on the theme, props on the mix. Download can be found HERE.
The ‘Twelve 12s’ series is back with our 48th installment once again and another one from myself – Superix with an ALL Vinyl ALL live Beatnuts production special!
‘The Beatnuts are unquestionably one of the greatest production outfits in hip hop that we’ve ever known and also one of my own personal favorite groups. Over the years, they have not only worked as producers & remix specialists for some of hip hops elite artists – they also established themselves as great artists in their own right making some truly bonafide classic albums & EPs, plus a ton of great instrumental projects on the side. I’ve put together some of my personal favorites here from mostly their earlier years, that both includes their solo records and a few lesser known killer remixes. Hope you enjoy the mix!’

Way Out of Living II - Mixed by DJ Day
Your typical DJ Day mix; diverse track selection, smooth mixing, all around quality.
"It’s not often that Day blesses us with a new mix, but on the cusp of Land Of 1000 Chances, he took a second to put the instruments down and compile a set that gives us a rare glimpse into the musical inspiration behind the critically acclaimed new LP. Featuring songs both new and old, originals and remixes, WOOL2 picks up where the first left off; a perfectly balanced mix of wonderful music to herald in the coming spring."

Sextape - Mixed by Drixxxe
This is an absolutely incredible mix. Highly Recommended.
A selection of vintage erotic & porn movie soundtracks (Black Lolita, Laure, Summer school, Aunt Peg, Madame Claude, Skin Flicks, Odyssey, Emanuelle and the Girls of Madame Claude, Vampyros Lesbos, SessoMatto, Sexshop, Sex O'clock USA, Glenda, Emanuelle and the last cannibals...)
Best of 45 King - Mixed by 45 King
I could have sworn that I posted this mix a few weeks back when it first posted on 45 King's Soundcloud page. Oh well, sorry about that everybody. I suppose late is better than never. This mix has been in heavy rotation lately. I can't exactly pin point what I like so much about this mix, but I keep going back to it. Quick mixing, but not too quick. A bunch of classic 45 King joints packed into 20 minutes, but not too many. Just enough to wet the palate making you want more. Enjoy
The Cut Audio Highlights - DJ Revolution & DJ Excel
Audio highlights from the live interactive video broadcast airing every Thursday 9pm PST on Breal.tv. This episode features Revolution displaying his skills mixing a bunch of new joints while DJ Excel provides a top shelf mix of classic hip hop and breaks. Also, there's a very interesting conversation with Excel after his set about the possibility of giving up deejaying for a "day job." Conversation begins around the 57 minute mark. Enjoy.
J. Rocc & Kutmah Live on BoilerRoom TV
Highly Recommended viewing and listening here. I'm still searching the web for the audio, but the video will do for now. I'm not sure why BoilerroomTV is hording this set when they so indiscriminately post all of their other sets. Can anyone explain to me what the reason is for making a video available on a pc only (not allowing mobile devices to play a video)? I can't quite understand this.
Learnign to Accept Rap's Generation Gap
This J-Zone article is an absolute must read for all of you. You can read the article HERE. I have a few thoughts in response to the article.
IN DEFENSE OF THE YOUNGER GENERATION
Since 95% of my students walk into class with their headphone on, I spontaneously asked all of my students in class one day to write down on a piece of paper what they were listening to as they walked into class.
Lord Finesse - Live From Tokyo Pt.1 (Soundwave Tour 2.14.13)
Update: 9 minutes into this bad boy and I'm very impressed so far. Highly Recommended (at the 9 minute mark at least)
2nd Update: Now 17 minutes in and I think this might be the mix of the year so far. Perfect way to go into the weekend.
If Lord Finesse was a baseball player he'd be in the Robert Hall of Fame for his Triple Crown record in hip-hop. Whether he's on the microphone, drum machine, or turntables, you know he'll be chasing that MVP crown. Last month The Underboss and Slice Of Spice hit Japan for the 'Soundwave Tour' where Finesse tore it up on the 1s and 2s. We recorded a live 2 hour set on 2.14.13 in Tokyo and as promised we're sharing it with all his fans in two FREE DOWNLOAD installments. ENJOY!
DJ Revolution Interviews DJ Khalil
Excellent interview aside from Khalil's nervous habit of saying "you know." The interview covers a range of topics that include Khalil discussing how it was like growing up as the son of a basketball legend, using music to cope with his father's stroke, working with Dr. Dre, Detox, his production process, meeting Chase Infinite, and deejaying for Magic Johnson's Showtime era parties as a kid. Enjoy
Classic Black Volume 3 - Mixed by Induce
Excellent mix of "classic and obscure" disco and boogie by Induce. Be sure to check the Q&A of Induce about the mix at Waxpoetics HERE.
DJ Revolution Interviews Mr. Choc
Very insightful interview here. Mr. Choc explains his leaving of Power 106 around the 13 minute mark. The story surrounding his leaving Power 106 basically describes the final days of Power 106 as an actual hip hop radio station on FM Radio. His description of events also includes the most details I've heard about the end of the Fantastik 4our/Friday Night Flavas show in 2006. A bunch of unanswered questions are addressed in this interview.
Mr. Choc Live Set on The Cut
I know a few of you are Choc haters, but I've always had a soft spot for Choc's workmanlike mixes. Noon still isn't the same without Choc's oldschool mix working as the soundtrack to my lunch. Choc gets props over here.
Crate Diggers: Adrian Younge
I am slowly making my push to become president of the Adrian Younge fan club. His talent and fusion of old and new is where hip hop needs to go.
In this episode, Adrian Younge shows off the record store he created at the Artform Studio, explains the influence European composers have on Wu-Tang and hip hop, and teaches how to pick records based on their cover art.
Strive for Imperfection
Here is an excellent article posted at Mixcrate by DJ Enki that I thought many of you would identify with. The article discusses the human ear's innate desire to find music with a "live" feel more pleasing to listen to. This phenomenon is certainly something that I have become more and more aware of as I study all of my musical heroes and continue my quest for the "perfect" mix (or shall I say "imperfect" mix). Ultimately, it's the perfect imperfections from masters like Dilla, Rza, Pete Rock, etc. that separate them from the rest of us. We all may try to duplicate what they do in our own way, but none of us can replicate their sound because our skill level just doesn't match up to them. Simply put, it's raw skill and mastery that allows for the perfect imperfections to be recorded. In the end, our ears can distinguish between the skill level that goes into a J. Rocc mix versus the technological genius that allows for a seemingly "perfect" mix to be created with the help of a program like Ableton. They are not the same, and our ears know it.
To me, the key moment comes when Gopnik sits with a couple of university professors who are studying the psychology of sound. They discuss an experiment in which a pianist played a Chopin song, and then the recording was manipulated to “much more variation within the tempo, or much less; with more variations within the volume of notes, or much less.” The manipulated recordings were played for people who then relayed their feelings about what they heard.
In other words, they were making the music sloppier or cleaner, testing to see at what point sloppiness turns music into just a mish-mash of sound, and, conversely, just how listeners respond to music that is so regimented as to be absolutely flawless.
They found that listeners like the middle ground. A little variation is the human touch; too much makes a mess of things.
Or, to steal a terrific quote from Chuck D: “The funk lies in the imperfections.”

Solid Steel Radio Show (3/8/13) Part - Mixd by J. Rocc
A live radio mix executed in the style of many of his Taster's Choice mixes. Don't expect Sex Machine 3 here. Instead, the mix allows all sorts of joints you've never heard (or at least I've never heard most of them) to breathe while being seamlessly mixed. Enjoy.
We welcome back J Rocc for our 25th Anniversary slot in hour 2, having featured on Solid Steel back in 2005 and also played at the Solid Steel night at Cargo for the 'Keep in Time' release. He's a man that's also known for his Broadest Beats and for this mix he opens with Krautrock legends Faust and moves through similar 70's jazz/prog/rock territory with The Abstract Truth from South Africa, Lokomotive Kreuzberg from Germany and Psychedelic Rock from South Korea with He 6! Then it's a sharp turn into an 80's New Wave and a leftfield disco selection featuring music from Doris Norton (an 80's Italian Delia Derbyshire), Das Ding, Dominatrix, Klein & MBO and Visage, all mixed to perfection as you'd expect from the founder member of the Beat Junkies.

Big Phat 90's Mixtape (Video)
Big Phat 90's Mixtape from DJ Woody on Vimeo.
Major late pass needed on this one right here. Amazing what happens when you actually click on links to sites that are unfamiliar. One of these days I'm going to master video mixing to the point where I can make a similar video. Until then, I'll just enjoy the contributions of others.

‘Big Phat 90′s’ is a nostalgic chronological musical ride through some of the decades dopest moments, reworking the classics with his unique blend of custom graphics, video sound bites and renowned turntable technique to rock the ‘slamminest’ 90′s house party since Kid n Play raised the roof.
In true 90′s style, here is a cassette friendly 45 minute ‘mixtape’ version of the set, enjoy!
Fly Fishing - Mixed by DJ Woody
I don't know how to say it other than to say that this is very good mix. Satisfaction guaranteed.
Chopped Herring Records was founded back in 2001. The same year DJ Woody became the first European DJ to win the International Turntablist Federation World Championships. At that time Herring HQ was located in Manchester, a 40 minute drive through Lancashire to Woody's hometown of Burnley. Chopped Herring Records' owner Pro Celebrity Golf and Woody had crossed paths on numerous times spinnin' in Manchester and the North West of England during the 90's, so it only seems natural (like the migration of Herring in the Baltic Sea) that C.H Recs and DJ Woody should 'hook up' for a mix at some point. 'Fly Fishing', a selection of released and unreleased tracks on Chopped Herring Records, mixed by DJ Woody is something we've been thinking about for some time. Since the Herring catalogue has grown dramatically in the last couple of years it seemed an appropriate time to get in touch with one of the greatest DJ's to ever do it to de-bone some Herring fillets in his inimitable, flavasome way. Chopped Herring Records and DJ Woody proudly present 'Fly Fishing'..

Sway in the Morning Set (2/28/13) - Mixed by DJ Steve1der
Steve1der recently got some shine on Sway's morning show and certainly made the best of it. This 28 minute mix seamlessly mixes together all sorts of remixes and re-edits of new joints, old joints, and in-between joints. The set mixes all the music together in a way where you don't really know where one song begins, and another one ends. Very refreshing and enjoyable.
Kutmah Boiler Room Set (7/2012)
J. Rocc and Kutmah performed exquisite sets last night at Boiler Room, Paris. The video/audio has not yet been posted, but I thought I'd post this 2012 Kutmah set while we wait. You can download the audio HERE. For the record: Pipo found the last 20 minutes of the mix incredibly inspiring.
Open Your MInd (Side 2) - Mixed by DJ Monk-One
An oldie, but a goodie from 1996. A mixtape made during a time when deejays didn't have the luxury of editing their mixes. Instead, you had one of three choices when recording a mix. One, record a mix that sounds like sloppy trash. Two, have better deejay skills than God and record a solid mix in one take. Or three, practice a mix over and over again until you think you've got the mix down to the point where you're ready to press record. Then, keep recording the mix over and over again (throwing out a tape for each botched mix or compromise sound quality by recording over an old tape) until you get a take down that's clean enough to be heard by a stranger's ears.
One of my early mixtapes. This was done in 1996 for Fat Beats to sell in the store. I did it 100% live, which meant that any time I messed up making it I had to go back and start over. I only had one Technics 1200 at the time, and one crappy belt drive. To my ears now it's full of rough transitions, weird tempo changes, and off beat cuts... But it worked at the time, and was my entré to radio in NYC when G-Man and J-Smooth of the Underground Railroad radio show heard it and invited me up to spin. All original vinyl on a breaks and beats concept. Hope you enjoy this artifact!
