Mixtape Nirvana

As I have mentioned before, the greatest mix site off all time was Dirtcastle.com (which no longer exists).  Well, I'm here to tell you all that the greatest thing to hit the web since free porn recently launched in the form of 500mixes.com.  The site was created by Dirtcastle founder, EJ Nord.  The site is specifically built for the mixtape aficionado by allowing visitors to stream and download mixes by genre.  I can tell you all firsthand that the site is perfect for selecting a musical landscape while you read all the salacious details surrounding the Manti Teo/Notre Dame hoax story.

Worth going there if only to get the Craze LOKL tape.

Great work Eric!

Thanks, Pipo. The "porn" quote is just what I needed to kick off the promotions!

The 500 Mixes hip hop chart is definitely the hardest one to select and rank. Looks like I might need to bump up LOKL! Give it some time and the hip hop chart selection and rankings will improve.

On a side note, the site is optimized for mobile devices. Android users can both stream and download. At some point, I'll create an app for iphone downloads.

As far as keeping it "secret" goes... I will keep it off the search engines for a few months. But after that, it will be 100% public and promoted. I am going to be cooperative and not post mixes against the wishes of DJs or copyright holders. I won't be making any money off it, so hopefully it will engender some goodwill.

There are so many good public domain mixes now that the concept of the site will work without the many mixes that are "off-limits". That said, as many of you know, "off-limits" means no ST or Dilla mixes (but hopefully J.Rocc mixes are okay). I'm also avoiding most BBC mixes (definitely the biggest loss for the site). Same goes for mixes with Top 40 artists (from any era) in the title of the mix. The bottom line is that I want this site to last and I want DJs to feel good about having their mixes included.

Thanks to everyone in our mixfam for the support and feedback!

Thank you Eric for all your hard work.

Question: I don't know if it's me, but I'm having trouble downloading the mixes. I press the down arrow next to a given mix but it only refreshes the page. I'll try from a different computer when I get home. Hopefully, it's just an issue of "user error."

Thanks for the heads-up on DLs. They are direct links to the file. I have a special piece of code that is supposed to force it to download (instead of loading a player). But it might not be working. It is probably a compatibility issue of some sort, specific to a browser or device.

If it's not too much trouble, send me an email with your info (device, operating system, browser, and which link(s) don't work).

Thanks for the heads-up. I'm looking into it.

I just tested on both Mac and PC, on Firefox, Safari, Explorer, and Chrome. And it was working on all of them.

If the download button isn't working, try a hard refresh (SHIFT + Refresh) and clear your cache. There was, in fact, a problem with some of the download code, but I fixed it yesterday. The old code may be stuck in people's browser caches.

Anyone who has trouble downloading, PLEASE let me know. It is very helpful, actually, and I will solve the problem for you. :-) You can let me know here at Pipomixes, or through the contact form on the 500 Mixes site. Thanks!

Thanks for the support mixfam!

I found about a dozen broken links. The technical difficulties should start to diminish now. But don't hesitate to use the contact form on the site to let me know if something doesn't work.

If you want to get updates on the site, follow @500Mixes on Facebook and Twitter.

Thanks for the new site, your efforts are deeply appreciated as am catching up with mixes that have only heard or read about or lost and now getting back.
