Love Potion Mix - Mixed by DJ Prophet

Classic 90's R&B to get y'all in the mood for Valentine's Day. Any mix that lead with Tony Tony Tone's "Just Me and You" is sure to get me hooked.

I Miss Hip Hop Volume 2 - Mixed by Mr. Choc

Just some good ol' fashion hip hop cleanly mixed by the All Mighty Rough Neck.  Perfect for some upbeat ambient music to celebrate your weekend.

Plug OneTwo Interview Mr. Choc

Stop what you're doing and watch/listen to this interview right now. Plug OneTwo gives his best Charlie Rose impersonation and provides a thorough and thoughtful interview of Mr. Choc unlike 99% of DJ/Producer interviews you've heard. While listening to Mr. Choc discuss a dark period in his life and his eventual recovery, I couldn't help but think about all of the other deejays/producers/emcees that never got the "second chance" Choc did. Highly Recommended.
This amazing chat with Mr. Choc will inspire you with the ebb and flow of his life, and courage to stay in the DJ game. Here's the show breakdown:
0:00-4:22 Discussion between the youth and our era of ingesting music.
4:25-6:05 Difference between New York and Los Angeles Djiing.
6:06-7:46 Choc talks about his mixing influence.
7:47-9:46 How music saved his life and his experience in a major market station.
9:47-10:54 Choc's depression after leaving a major market station.
10:55-15:26 The event at a stoplight that changed his life.
15:29-17:29 Learning the work ethic of Dj Muggs & Choc's reinvention.
17:32-18:20 Getting re-inspired at 38 and growing.
18:21-22:18 How Choc's mother brought him up to be a Dj.
22:31-24:16 Evelyn Champagne King vs. Minnie Riperton.
24:18-25:42 We elude to the birth of hip hop.
25:43-26:47 Prince vs. Lenny Kravitz.
26:48-30:40 Will I Am Black Eye Peas vs BBE label.
30:41-33:30 Tribe Called Quest vs. Slum Village.
33:32-34:34 Finding the gem of a song vs. playing it in a crowd.
34:35-35:31 Am Kday vs FM Kday.
35:32-38:51 Top 5 boy bands.

A mix cd released in Japan. A mix of the original songs used on alot of Break/Battle LPs. Plus some collabs with Ricci Rucker & Mr. Henshaw.

QBert NAMM 2014

Scratch nerds rejoice!

DJ Melo-D Live at NAMM 2014

All reports suggest that DJ Melo-D put on a stellar set Saturday at NAMM. Here's the first video that I've seen surface. Stay tuned for more video as it hits the web.

Get Well Soon Mark the 45 King

In the rare hip hop tradition of actually celebrating our legends while they're still alive, I thought I'd post a few 45 King mixes.  45 King suffered a heart attack last Wednesday and is still recuperating in a NYC area hospital.  Here's to a speedy recovery to the first hip hop producer who said "the hell with an emcee, I'll just release my beats."

Diggin' in the Crates (2011) - Mixed by B-Kutz Shakedabutz

Just some good ol' fashion break mixing here. Enjoy.

Strictly breaks in this edition (not the lazy re-issue break records, although I DO own a couple...) Any one who knows my tastes, knows I LOVE me some original breaks, so this mixtape is compiled entirely from original breaks. If you love hip-hop like I do, you should have no problem recognizing some familiar sounds throughout this collage of music.

Who Sampled Interviews DJ Amir

Highly recommended interview with all sorts of nuggets of diggin', music, and deejay culture. Some tidbits

- Fat Beats initially declining to distribute On Track mix series
- Kon doing the "deejaying" and Amir doing the diggin' during On Track mixes
- English interviewer refuting common American DJ claim that European audiences are more open than American (I agree with the logic BTW)
- Too many to spoil

DJ Revolution Interviews Marco Polo

Rev's interview skills are on par with his dj skills. His interviews really come from the deejay/producer/digger perspective. This particular installment covers Marco Polo's beatmaking process, applying for Canadian grants, records, beat-up MPCs, etc.

Rhythm Roulette: Damu the Fudgemunk

T
hose familiar with our “Rhythm Roulette” series are in for a treat and those new to this grab a seat, strap in, and take notes. We kick off 2014 with a special installment with DC’s own Damu The Fudgemunk. Repping his Redefinition Records, Damu stops by Fat Beats and hits up their drumkit to school us on his history and process when it comes to putting together beats and searching for “drum breaks.”

Starting off with some quick anecdotes about his early days in the game linking up with the DITC crew, getting schooled on drum breaks – from the very rare to the frequently used – and record stores buying him pizza and soda because he’d be copping records all day. A true beatsmith he even talks about the need to use original drum breaks from records rather than sampling from existing mixes “even if it takes 30 years.” To close the episode, Damu hits the drumkit and replicates a few well to lesser known soul and hip hop drum breaks. Check out the epsiode above and be sure to head over to Damu’s BandCamp to get your hands on “Spare Overtime – Reinspired” offered both digitally and on 12″ Vinyl with a Bonus 45.

Unreleased 45 Mix - DJ Skeme Richards

Some good videos to post later.  Listen to this well paced breaks mix in the meantime.

DJ Skeme Richards of hotpeasandbutta.com shared this with me and allowed me to release it.
It was originally made to promote a company that was doing a line of 45 boxes for 7" vinyl but that never happened so now we get to hear it.

UK vs Philly - Mixed by DJ Format & Phill Most Chill

Originally aired on the Solid Steel Radio Show this past August.  Don't sleep.

In Hour 2 we welcome back DJ Format alongside Phill Most Chill to celebrate the release of their album 'The Foremost'. DJ Format gives a run down of thier mix;
"Instead of doing yet another promo mix that incorporates a song or two from our new album, I thought it would be fun for me & Phill to each do a 30 minute mix of Hip Hop from our respective areas. I'm from Southampton, and since that's not a very big place I thought it would be more fitting to play some of my favourite old UK Hip Hop records. Philadelphia always had a healthy Hip Hop scene that boasted famous artists such as DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince, Cash Money & Marvelous and Steady B just to name a few. Phill wanted to showcase some of the more obscure/random Rap records from Philly that he loves."

The Wedding Mixer - Mixed by DJ Rhettmatic

Just in case you slept on this mix when it was originally released, Rhettmatic recently uploaded it to his soundcloud page to promote his "Wedding Mixer" night at The Echo on Valentine's Day.

The History Of The Wedding Mixer Mixtape
Back in 2002, Key-Kool of the Visionaries asked me on behalf of his brother, if I was available to Dj his brother's wedding reception...the only thing is, the wedding was to be held in Hawaii. At that time, I couldn't make it out because I had something already scheduled, and at the same time, Key's brother & his soon-to-be-wife couldn't afford to get a Dj at the last minute. So to help out Key's brother and to serve as a wedding gift as well, I made a mixtape specifically for Key's brother & future wife to play at their wedding reception. The mixtape was filled with all the classic 70's & 80's joints that can get a party going & music that basically Key's brother grew up listening to.
A week went by after the wedding has passed. Key returned from Hawaii and quickly notified me to let me know that the mixtape was a success; everyone enjoyed the mix and were dancing & vibing along to it. That made me pretty happy......Another week goes by & I happens to rent the Adam Sandler's Romantic Comedy movie "The Wedding Singer" because i've never seen it before and wanted to catch up on all the movies I hasn't seen that year. Low and behold, while watching the movie, a certain scene in the movie with actor Jon Levitz sparked off an idea....which led up to the birth of "The Wedding Mixer" cd. And the saying goes, "The rest is history....."
Ever since "The Wedding Mixer" mix cd was released, over the years, I've been asked & requested many times from soon-to-be married couples to Dj their wedding reception because they heard The Wedding Mixer mix cd and fell in love with it. Of course I've never accepted any offers to Dj wedding receptions or Dj'ed a set, unless it was a real good friend of mine or close family members.
Fast forward to now, for 2014......It's been a while since I've spun a long Dj set by myself since my mobile Dj days, as well as my high school & college days. This time, I want to challenge myself to spin a long set in the same vein as his Wedding Mixer mix cd. Come this Valentine's Day 2014, I will be spinning a 3-4 hour set playing all the classic 70's & 80's party joints on some "grown folk" steeze. I have joined forces with my good friends, Footlong Developement, to bring you the Official "Wedding Mixer" party at the Echo in Los Angeles. In honor of the event, I decided to put up the Wedding Mixer mix to give you a feel to what to expect from the official "Wedding Mixer" party. Some of you may actually have the physical copy of the mix cd that came out in 2002. If this is your first time listening to this, I hope you enjoy the tunes....pluse, this mix is a good indication of some of the music I'm going to play on Valentines' Day.
BTW.....I used the original vinyl for this mix & recorded it on old 4-track cassette recorder before I got Pro-Tools & before Serato was actually released.

Mix for Dublab - Mixed by J. Rocc

Excellent 2 hour mix with J. Rocc covering an array of genres. The description of the mix says that this was recorded in 2006. I have a hard time believing that a J. Rocc mix stayed below my radar for almost eight years, but stranger things have happened. Highly Recommended.

Always fun to watch one of the funkier producers spinnin' an all 45 set.

The Hour of Chaos - Mixed by DJ Moneyshot

Egotrip posted this mix last week filed under "Shiznit We Slept On."  Well, they weren't the only ones.  I did a PE mix of my own a few years back and I am well aware of how challenging it can be to mix PE's catalog, let alone blending in the sample sources.  This mix right here is the mix I could have only dreamed of creating.  I tip my hat to DJ Moneyshot.  Highly Recommended.

We Love Sharon Jones - Mixed by DJ Chorizo Funk

#WeLoveSharon is the second edition of the #WeLove mix series.
In celebration of her triumphant return and the upcoming release of a new album, We Love number 2 is dedicated to the one & only queen of Daptone Records:
Ms. Sharon Jones.

In the Lab with Alchemist and Evidence

This is an absolutely hilarious interview featuring both Alchemist and Evidence.  The two top shelf producers/emcees discuss topics that include their studio environment, equipment, channeling 2pac's spirit, weed, and looking for samples.  Here's a gem from the article.

Alchemist Studio Sessions with Mobb Deep in the Late ‘90s
Al: Hennessey, whores, drugs, unlimited budget, beats, one white guy. Next question.
Ev: I made it into a couple of those sessions, and everyone was looking at me like, “Who the fuck is Thun?”

Very fresh live mix from Spinbad recorded while on tour with Russel Peters last year.  Exactly what you'd expect from a Spinbad mix; a whole lot of work, scratches, extended blends, unique song combinations.

The 13 Best Mixes of 2013

Here it is mix fiends.  The much anticipated, can't be duplicated, the often imitated best mixes list where merit is king.  Hold the salt if you didn't make the list.  Mixes from the likes of J. Rocc, DJ Spinna, Rhettmatic, Boogie Blind, 45 King, and many other legendary names didn't make the cut.  I'll be the first to admit that a slump buster or two gets posted every now and again.  However, remember why you keep coming back to this blog.  You keep coming back because this blog is devoted to posting nothing but the highest quality mixes regardless of the deejay's name.  In other words, just getting a post speaks volumes for the excellence of all the mixes that get love on this site (minus the one or two wack ones that made it through the filter).  No list is perfect and this list is certainly no exception.  Over 300 mixes were posted this year.  It is impossible for me to remember every blend and track selection of all the mixes posted.  As a result, the odds are pretty good that many worthy mixes were simply forgotten.  I did my best to keep notes throughout the year to set aside mixes that I thought were worthy candidates.  However, my system was far from perfect.  I won't attempt to justify or explain any of my selections.  Here it is.  The 13 best mixes according to me.  Feel free to tell me how shitty my list is.

Nia Snippets - Mixed by J. Rocc

I remember getting this tape back in the late 90's with one of my Hiphopsite orders. I think my walkman ate the tape or something because I haven't been able to find this tape anywhere. Either way, one of the more rare J. Rocc mixes. Props to Mowaxplease.com for ripping and uploading the mix.  In an unrelated related note, Nia remains one of my favorite albums.

This is the cassette released in 1999 as a promo for Blackalicious' Nia LP. It's mixed by J Rocc of the world famous Beat Junkies.
I've uploaded this for my Mo' Wax fan website www.mowaxplease.com
Please note that the audio is a bit weird for the first 90 seconds, due to the age of both the tape and my tape player!
