Tuff Cuts - Mixed by DJ Kentaro

Kentaro provides a superb mix of various selections from the reggae label, Pressure Sounds. The emphasis is a bit on the dub side of their vaults, taking pure rhythms and mixing them into a non-stop roots era routine. The pacing, mixing and tastefully executed tricks blend together 28 selections into one continuously mixed set. Tracks inlcude numbers like "Diverse Doctrine Version" by the Village Bunch, "False Rumor Version" by King Tubby, "Future Dub" by the Upsetter, "Disco Jack Version" by Jackie Mittoo, "Roots Kunta Kintye" by Joe Gibbs & The Professionals, "Kunta Kite" and "Beware Version" by the Revolutionaries, "Jerusalem" by Devon Irons, "Freedom" by Earl 16, "Road Runner" by SOunds Unlimited, "Shaka The Great" by the Overnight Players, and "Mozabites", "Hello Love Brother", "Shake The Nation", "Out Of The Abyss" and "Lowe Gravity" by Prince Far I & The Arabs.

Video: Nas Ilmatic Promo

I watched this promo video last night for the 9 millionth time and still felt like I wanted to run out the door and cop Illmatic as if I had never heard it before. There was just something special about producers like Large Pro, Primo, Q-Tip, Pete Rock, and L.E.S., all getting behind Nas and ensuring his first album would be a Hip Hop classic. If by chance you haven't seen this video, please watch and enjoy. If you've already seen it, watch it again to remind yourself why you love this music so much.

Militia Survival Mix (01) - Mixed by J. Rocc

Another J. Rocc mix posted by the man himself (on his own blog). Below is his explanation of the mix.

This is Promo Only. Never before released. From the vaults. If you would like to know what's on the mix...well Rich One wanted a thugged out mix.....so he got a thugged out mix. There's a some Nas, Group HomeNoreaga, Cormega, Mobb Deep, Wu Tang Clan, Iron Sheiks and many more!!!

This is a basic mix.
Nothing crazy.
No crazy "Beat Junkie Style" doubles.
Just some clean mixes.
So don't be mad when you don't hear "Sex Machine 2.5"
...(that's the mix I did for the shoe company).

Mixing The Enemy - Mixed by Pipomixes

Since many of you seem to be enjoying some of my older mixes, I thought I'd post this Public Enemy mix that I completed in the summer of 2007. I remember seeing PE perform "Harder Than You Think" on Jimmy Kimmel Live a year and a half ago, and I said to myself that PE still had "it." It's not 1988 all over again, but I do feel that every deejay owes PE a tribute mix at some point in their lives. Hope you all enjoy the mix.

**Also, I have a new R.I.P. Scratch Magazine mix that I did on behalf of manifestworldwide.com that will be posted very soon.

Blowout Breaks - Mixed by DJ Jedi

Here's the review written by Fader magazine:

"Nineties jazz cats Digable Planets are a natural selection for a "these are the breaks" collection, and here DJ Jedi lets it all bang out with over 70 minutes of the group's sample sources. Southern California's Jedi served as the tour DJ when the Digs recently reunited and he nonchalantly cuts their building blocks together. If the Digable Planets are meant for the sunset hours and Butterfly's soul-rock Cherrywine project is for the blurry past-midnight, then Blowout Breaks for breakfast will get you right for the rest of day. Hearing Shuggie Otis's "Island Letter" slip into Skull Snaps' "It's A New Day" is even better than eggs and facon on an English muffin with green hot sauce."

Rekonstructed Elements - Mixed by DJ Shortkut

No tracklist on this one, but trust me when I tell you that you don't need one on this mix. Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Shortkut mixes and I have to say that he is definitely slept on (at least by me) as a mixtape deejay. I always knew he was nice with the battle routines, but I overlooked how smooth his mix-sets are. Enjoy.

The World Famous Beat Junkies Vol. 3 - Mixed by DJ Melo-D

Volume 3 is my personal favorite out of the three volumes. I remember that I used to try to copy Melo-D's intros in all of my mixtapes back when I first heard this mix. Did my intros ever come close to matching Melo's? Hell no!! But, I tried anyway. Finally, one day I just decided that I was never going to be as nice as Melo-D and that I should leave all my "intros" on the cutting room floor. To be honest, accepting that my intros would never match Melo's was actually quite liberating. Enjoy the mix...

The Kush Mix - Mixed by Pipomixes

This mix is a few years old, but I thought I'd give it a post for those of you who have never heard it. Below is the explanation I gave about the theme of the mix when I first released it.

This mix was inspired by the Chronic album. I have come to the conclusion that the Chronic album is the greatest hip hop album of all time (in my opinion). When the album came out it sounded like nothing before it. Since the album dropped, nothing has touched the uniqueness of the Chronic sound. My goal with the Kush Mix was to create a mix that sounds like no other mix. I mixed songs that are usually not mixed together with the aim of creating a musical landscape that tells the story of a “night on the town.” I hope you enjoy the mix as much as I enjoyed making it.

America's First Hip Hop President

The Hip Hop Generation is officially in power!!! All political orientation aside, there is no denying that the election of Barack Obama (America's first black president) is largely influenced by the maturation of the Hip Hop Generation. For god sakes, we now have a president who has listened to a Jay-Z album. Many of you do not know this, but when I'm not creating and posting mixes, I work as a Political Science Professor at a nearby college. I've always thought it was cool that things have gotten to the point where you can now have a college professor who comes to class wearing Adidas shell-toes, and makes in-class references to the lyrics of Chuck D and De La Soul. And I am not alone, hip hop heads are now social workers, lawyers, accountants, school teachers, doctors, nurses, engineers, etc... Believe it or not, we are now beginning to infiltrate the capillaries of power. Will we go as the generation prior, where hippie dreams of peace and love became yuppie realities of greed, excess, and moral relativism? Or will we rise to the challenge and stay true to the core principles of hip hop that have served to empower many of the disempowered? Will success be measured by the number of houses we own and the shine on our gas guzzling SUV? Or, will we do as our hip hop founders did, and make beautiful music and culture out of limited resources and a desire for creativity? Will we transcend the definition of success into improving our communities, becoming better husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers? Will we transform a nation infected with a false sense of entitlement into a nation of innovators who will take responsibility for their successes and failures? The challenges are ours to rise to. The bitching and moaning stops now. The questions of tomorrow are now ours to answer.

**Okay, I'm off my soapbox. A new video of Shortkut, Vinroc, and Apollo below.
