Another Token Jazz Hour - Mixed by Bowls

Bowls delivers the second, Highly Recommended edition of jazz cuts sampled by J. Dilla. Props to Bowls for discovering some hidden gems that are mostly unknown by the dustiest of crate diggers.  The mix highlights Bowls' talents as a digger; as well as Dilla's wizardry of manipulating sample sources.

Recorded nearly 7 years after the first volume, Another Token Jazz Hour is my second 60-minute mix of jazz records sampled by Jay Dee AKA J Dilla. All tracks were ripped from 100% original vinyl pressings, except for the 2 songs that were only issued on CD/cassette. As for the music itself, this journey dives a bit deeper than its predecessor. 70+ samples referencing everything from the classics to the largely-unknown. At its core, though, it’s just like the first one - an earnest tribute to his ear and passion for music, his timeless contributions, and his legacy as the greatest beatmaker ever. Many of you enjoyed part II the other day, so I thought you'd all enjoy Part I. Below is Bowls' description of the mix.

Bowls in the mix with a selection of J Dilla's rock samples. This one's around 37 minutes long, but its not one of those jam-packed break extravaganzas. I decided to let a few of the songs breathe, due in large part to J Dilla's ear for samples. His patience in listening all the way through a 10-minute psych freak-out, only to grab four seconds at the 6:14 mark, is almost mind-numbing. Oh and in case you forgot...these are all original wax pressings. The only way to go!

I know most of you are kind of over the whole Dilla mix thing, but I was vibing out to this mix yesterday at work and thought I'd give Bowls some shine and post this mix. This is the kind of mix you should put on while you just cool-out and wish away all the world's problems. Remember, it could always be worse. As long as you have your health and a pot to piss in, everything else is a bonus. **Don't worry, I didn't even believe it as I typed it.
