As Roc Marci essentially created an entire sub-genre of rap that created a lane for the Griselda crew and many others; DJ Neil Armstrong did something very similar in the early 2000s beginning with his Original mix series. Here is a 20-minute sampler of the latest nu-wave mix from the legendary mixape DJ.

Most sequels don't compare to the original, but in my opinion, 2Original is better than the Original (which was really good as well). In my opinion, this is one of the most well crafted and thought out mixes I've heard.
DJ Neil Armstrong recently completed this mix for Theme Magazine. Below is the write-up from Theme Magazine...For our new Soundtrack : Travel column we’ve asked our favorite DJ, Neil Armstrong, to narrate the theme through his encyclopedic collection of music.
A big chunk of my life is spent on the road. For this column I thought about what occupied my mind in between getting from point A to point B. Everything from getting excited about the place I’m going, missing something I’m leaving behind, or looking forward to seeing something new. It’s more like a personal trip—in your headphones, by yourself in a car, or when you are out at the beach just chilling out reading a book. Some picks aren’t about physically traveling but emotionally and mentally escaping.
NOTES FROM THE ROAD :: This is DJ Neil Armstrong, almighty 5th Platoon. I’m actually at where the Chicago Bulls play and I am onstage. We just finished soundcheck and I’m working on this mixtape for Theme magazine. In the midst of working on it, I got called away to be Jay-Z’s tour DJ. It was supposed to be a full mixtape and it’s all about traveling and it’s funny because I ended up putting it together in hotels, onstage, while soundcheck was going on, and all over the United States. Some of the songs in the magazine got omitted just because it didn’t make sense because some of the fodder I need to put together a proper mixtape just wasn’t available to me. But regardless, it is supposed to capture that essence of why we travel—half the time it’s to get out there and see something new, and another part of the time is spent just trying to get home—the idea that home is where the heart is. When you listen to this when you travel, remember there’s always someone else out there just like you doin’ their thing. Be safe! Peace

Hearing this mixtape for the first time back in 2002 completely changed the way I approached making a mix. For me, this mix made it okay to put a little production value behind a mix. With Serato, Torq, and Protools being industry standard in today's deejay world, mixes with a high level of production value are commonplace. The fact that hardcore deejays like DJ Premier are using Serato is a result of deejays like Neil Armstrong who pushed the envelope when it still wasn't "hip hop" to produce a mix that sounded "produced."
