DJ Rhettmatic Live at Fat Beats Pop-Up

Live, high quality DJ sets on video are a rarity to find these days. I'm not interested in a 20 second clip; nor am I interested in a DJ live streaming for 3 hours. A nice 5-30 minute video of a DJ putting their all into a mix is what I'm after. Here you go. Enjoy.

J. Rocc's Final Adventures in Stereo Mix & AIS Eulogy

Last Friday marked the end of J. Rocc's Adventures in Stereo. I can't tell you how much inspiration I took from each episode of AIS. Sometimes it was the track selections. Sometimes it was J. Rocc's homemade blends. Sometimes it was the megamixes that J. Rocc was kind enough to create in 2015 and 2018. Sometimes it was the 5-10 minute mixes where you could hear a really inspired J. Rocc just showing off.

Saturday mornings are the highlight of my week. No work, me and Lil Mixes get to sleep-in without the rush and frenzy of a weekday morning; and the grind of life always seems more tolerable on a Saturday morning. For the last six years, the soundtrack of my Saturday mornings has always been listening to the replay of AIS from the night before (while the TV shows EPL or College Football). Saturday mornings will continue to be my weekly highlight. However, a very important ingredient will now be missing going forward.

I just hope that the decision to bring AIS to an end was J. Rocc's decision. It would be a real shame if anybody other than J. Rocc was behind this decision. Please join me in saying a little prayer for J. Rocc's next megamix coming sooner as opposed to later.

Side note: The above video captures J. Rocc creating an uptempo mix. I barely recognize any of the tracks because I don't normally gravitate toward uptempo music. When I first heard this mix I had now idea how much work J. Rocc was putting into the mix because it all sounded so seamless (often a curse of being such a skilled DJ). Seeing the video gave me a whole new perspective. Wow!

Cut Chemist One Turntable Loop Pedal Funk 45 Fundraiser Show

The video work allows you to see the technique behind Cut Chemist's legendary turntable loop pedal method. High Recommended.

A bunch of DJs got together for our friend and fellow DJ Mat The Alien to raise money for medical expenses. This was my set. For Mat I wanted to revamp some of The Soft Cell mix to have it be all funk. Its if my Sound Of The Police mix and Brainfreeze had a child.. Get mix here https://cutchemist.bandcamp.com/track... Dilla Fest 2021 with DJ Sets By DJ Rhettmatic and DJ Spinna

Above is the two-hour video of last Saturday's Dilla Fest. In addition to Rhettmatic's stellar set; you can watch all sorts of Dilla associates share various stories and tidbits about all things Dilla. Below, is an outstanding DJ Spinna Dilla mix that closed-out the fest.

KUTMAH - Delhi to Berlin - beats & bops (12/31/20)

Just a masterclass in mixing provided by Kutmah. Saying that Kutmah seamlessly blends across genres doesn't do justice to the psychedelic vibe that is created throughout the mix. Highly Recommended.

Vortex (Audio-Visual) - ADA

My man ADA continues to be on some next level ish. He creates beat tapes and mixes just how I like them, where you can't really tell the difference.  It's just one beautiful musical journey that is constantly stimulating the ears.  In this case, ADA has created both a audio and visual journey worthy of many replays. Highly Recommended.

J. Rocc Vinyl Factory Live Stream (#2)

One of the few positives of 2020 Pandemic is how much material J. Rocc has delivered us. Whether he's delivering a megamix, or a more subdued mix of rare joints; it's always funky.

Beat Junkies: Marathon Mix for Change

The Beat Junkies performed a 12-hour marathon mix on Sunday. Unfortunately, most DJs are no longer archiving their sets on Twitch to avoid being taken down. However, there are dozens of snippets that you can watch HERE to give you some inspiration.

Pete Rock Tribute Set - Rob Swift and Dilly

Highly Recommended Pete Rock tribute from Rob Swift and Dilly.

Stezo Tribute Set - DJ Melo-D

Between the pandemic and social unrest; I've hoarded many dope finds of late. Here's Melo-D tribute set to Stezo (RIP).

Of all the live streaming being currently done by DJs, Melo-D's are far and away the most impressive. With very few exceptions; live streaming doesn't do much for me. IMO It's lazy. Get in the lab, put some time into a mix, and then share (or sell) it to the world. Check Melo-D's Instagram to see how it should be done.
